Ten Cows A Chewing

Red Rooster III arrived at H&M Landing December 12 after a 14-day Rod & Reel Radio trip withy 22 anglers aboard and skipper Andy Cates at the wheel. The boat had a large load of tuna that included ten cows, or tuna over 200 pounds caught at the Hurricane Bank and at the Finger Bank. Eight anglers had a cow, and regular Ben Kita of LA had a pair.

The biggest tuna was a 244.4-pounder taken by Don Norlin of Lakewood. He got it with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Don said he fished with an Avet 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXXH rod.

Bud Mauerhand of Paradise won second place for a 241.5-pound yellowfin he caught on a kite with a sardine bait on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he used 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a five and a half-foot Calstar rod.

Jack Probert of Hesperia won third place for a 231.8-pound tuna. He told Bill Roecker it bit a sardine on a 5/0 Gorilla hook tied to 130- pound Soft Steel Triple Force line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Jack said he used a Tiagra 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXXH rod.

Rock musician and songwriter Carl Newton of North Hollywood had a 214-pound tuna. He bagged it with a sardine under a balloon on a 7/0 Quick Rig hook on 130-pound Momoi leader and 130-pound Izorline. He fished with a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.

Ben Kita of LA had cows of 204 and 211 pounds. He fished ‘em up with sardines on 4/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks on 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra, with a Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod.

Charlie Tanaka of San Francisco popped a 206-pound tuna with a sardine on a 5/0 Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 100-pound Blackwater Spectra, with an Accurate 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 H rod.

Ted Kirkbride of Escondido caught a 204-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he used 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 r4eel and a Calstar five and a half-foot rod.

Bill Walsh of Chino Hills bagged a 201-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 VMC hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Big Game Spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and “…an old Seeker six-foot rod.”

David Fay of LA slipped into the 200-pound club with a 200.9-pound yellowfin tuna that sucked up his sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. David used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 660 XH rod.

A 160-pound tuna was caught on 30-pound line by Mark Moffat of San Diego. Mark said he grew impatient on the Finger Bank waiting for a bite. He got it in only 20 minutes.

Red Rooster III is in port until the day after Christmas.

Dec. 9th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday ended up with hopes of today. Finishing the day with 23 tuna and a late hit on better fish including a 206 and a 249. We were all stoked about today untill 3:00 in the morning the wind came up and we started dragging anchor.
From 3:00 to lunch time we have been pulling and dropping the anchor with 20 plus knots of wind. Its hard enough to hang here as it is, with this wind the challenge is overwelming. So our visions of finishing up the trip with a last day hit have powdered we are going to leave here in an hour and start heading up. The weather will be an issue so we are out of here.
We will report again tomorrow.
Andy Cates

Dec. 8th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday was another enjoyable day driving around and stopping on fish for nothing. We worked our way down the lower banks and anchored up in the evening for again, nothing. We started down where we fished last trip and so far this morning we have 5 tuna . A couple of 175 pounders and three other fish 80 to 120. We do see some bigger fish so we will sit tight and hope for the best. At least we have fish around us. Not since the brilliant move of leaving the Bank have we felt like we may be in the game. So here we sit.
Andy Cates

Dec. 6th, 2008

Good morning folks. 60 more miles untill the lower banks. As we made our move inside the fishing got worse in there and better where we were. Not to stoked about that but we will have three days in here and hopefully we can get back on the fish and proceed with the plan.
We still have nice weather and that is half the battle. Right now we need a lot of luck hopefully off the bow as we head in.
Andy Cates

Dec. 5th, 2008

Good morning folks. We sat at the bank untill 130 in the afternoon had poor conditions but scratched wahoo and tuna most of the morning. After we left to head up to the beach , naturaly they bit at the bank. ironocly right were we were sitting. Nice.
With a couple of wells of fish we will be up on the lower banks tomorrow afternoon and will have three days to try for big ones. Yesterday there were 3 fish over 300 pounds caught in that area and some heartbreak losses to go with. I never like to leave fish to find fish but the chance of a 300 plus pounder is more appealing for the group.
Lets hope it works out.
Andy Cates

Dec. 4th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a spectacular day with action from dawn until dusk. 63 tuna and 23 wahoo anchored up all day. The tuna were 100 to 180 pounds average fish around 150 pounds and another half a dozen or more fish in the high hundreds being 198 to 205. One stand out fish at 226. All in all it was just what we were looking for what a great way to get started.

My favorite line from some of the first timers, " Is it always like this ?". I would think not. Great action on the kite and balloons and fly line as well, only a few fish on the chunk with really no stand outs. So far this morning only a few tuna and 22 wahoo we see the fish around just not hitting yet.

Hopefully soon.

Andy Cates

Dec. 2nd, 2008

Good evening folks. We had a nice starting day out at the Bank and it looks like enough sign to scratch. With 24 tuna and 14 wahoo there was enough going on to keep everyone interested and at the rail. We did not get the anchor down until about 10:30 and found bites right away.

The grade is typical 120 to 180 with one fish at 236 on the kite. The conditions were tough with wind against current. We will see how it goes tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Dec. 1st, 2008

Good morning folks. Our last day of travel and we will be fishing tomorrow morning. Rick has been fattening the guys up with the best change up of food since Jorge left. The results are incredible. You really have to decide if you want to eat all the seatings unless you have elastic waist band shorts.

On the other note today we are going over the wahoo fishing and spending the day rigging. Our ETA is 900 in the morning tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Nov. 29th, 2008

Good evening folks.

We completed our first full day of travel after. A quick Jack Pot and processing seminar today and an overall plan for the trip.

As of now we are headed to the Hurricane Bank. We figure a few days out here and then finish up on the beach after the fleet of 10 day boats move out. We will get a report tomorrow on the lower banks and can easily turn left but we will see how it goes.

It would be nice to get a shot at some wahoo and enjoy some anchor style fishing outside but we will make that final decision then. We will report again

He Found The Baja Cows

Andy Cates slid into the Red Rooster III’s slip November 26 after the 11-day (eight with a flyback option) Accurate trip with reel developer Jack Nilsen. Jack exercised his option to fly home, as did most of the 26 anglers.

Cates took the group to the southern banks off Baja, anchored on one of the southernmost, and got the first cows to come from the area this year. He called the fleet, but only Royal Star was in position to take advantage of the discovery. Cates ended his trip with nine cows, including the 353.7-pound super cow landed by Judith Montague of Cardiff.

Ken Pickett of La Mesa won first place for a 292-pound whopper he got with a mackerel on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra backing. He used an Accurate 50 W reel and a six and a half-foot Calstar rod. “I had a good time,” he said of the fight. “It lasted an hour and 45 minutes.”

Allison Shuman of Venice won second place for the 247.5-pound tuna she hooked, fought and landed after it bit on a sardine on a ringed 6/0 Super Mutu hook. She used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a topless Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.  “My best fish before was 125 pounds,” said Allison. I fought this one in the harness and I had to get in the skiff at one point. He bit, he ran, he went down and took me around the boat once. “Then he got wrapped on the anchor. Andy pulled it part way up and we went in the skiff to get it off. I used a balloon to get the hookup.”

Gary Gillingham of Duarte got a 234.7-pounder to win third place.

Stas Velonakis found a 217.5-pounder.

Kevin Leong had the fourth-best qualifying fish at 231 pounds. Since there was no best troll fish, he won a jacket. Kevin said he used a mackerel on a 5/0 Gorilla hook on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Blackwater Spectra backing on an Accurate 12 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXH rod. He also had a 217-pounder.

Calvin Benton of Oakland pulled in a 205-pounder with a sardine on a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook. He fished with 100-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, 100-pound Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.

Miles Yamaguchi of Riverside got a 201.6-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra backing. He used an Accurate 50 reel and a Yo’s custom Calstar 6460 XXH rod.

That leaves only the super cow to account for, something already done by Jack Nilsen. It’s repeated here so any newcomers can find the information with that of the rest of the catch.

“She fought it the normal way—did a nice job,” said Jack, “without any undue assistance from the crew. Judy has fished with us before, and this tuna came on an Accurate ATD 30 on Blackwater 100-pound hollow Spectra, and 130 Blackwater flourocarbon shock leader. The rod was a Calstar 6465 XXH, and it bit on a mackerel on an Owner Gorilla 6/0 hook. “Her fish is the best yellowfin tuna caught so far on an Accurate 30,” said Jack. “It was a pretty damn nice trip, as it all turned out.”

Good morning folks. Our stop in Cabo went well with everyone getting off the boat at a decent hour. The weather is nice and a great ride up last night. I wanted to thank Accurate reels and Blackwater fluorocarbon for the help and the rigging throughout the trip

We had great results with both the reels and the line. The short top shots were the key while fishing the sardines with 100 pound and 135. The balloons and kite saw decent results on the second day were is the first and last day was all fly line.

Lets hope this kicks off the big fish season , I know there is a lot of excitement when 300 pounders hit the docks .We should be at customs at 800 am and at the dock at 900 in the morning we will have an updated eta tomorrow.

Nov. 22nd, 2008

Good evening folks A day of big fish to end the trip. Actually it was very slow only 7 fish for the day. The evening brought us three bites. Ken Picket with a 298, Kevin Leong with another 218 and Judy Montague with a whopping 355 pounder. The Size of the fish make up for the lack of numbers.  We did not see the sign down here like we did yesterday but it seems that the chance of a once in a lifetime fish is here.

We are headed to Cabo to drop off the people. The weather is great and it sounds like it will continue.

Andy Cates

Nov. 21st, 2008

Good evening folks. Well this might be the start of it, After the sample yesterday afternoon we were eager to see what would happen today. A slow scratch on nice big fish with 4 fish over 200 pounds and another 15 fish from 13o to 190 pounds. What a great show, with big fish boiling and jumping with the kite and balloons the surface action was great. With all big fish there are losses with some today that just makes you wonder.

We have one more day and hope to get a couple of outstanding fish for our efforts. They are here.

Andy Cates

Nov. 20th, 2008

Good evening folks. After 2 days of looking we finally found something to work with. We didn't get things located until late afternoon but found something worth trying tomorrow. With a 216 and a 130 pounder, things were looking good and then one fish over 100 pounds right at dark. All of miles and hours were put in and hopefully there is more to it, we will find out tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Nov. 18th, 2008

Good evening folks. Yesterday turned out to be a slow start with a little bit of tuna on porpoise and no wahoo on the shallows. Water was good and plenty of life just no wahoo. We made the most of the day and had great bait fishing in which came in handy today.

We spent the morning on the upper end of the ridge and had a great morning on 25 to 35 pound tuna. A few small yellows mixed in but great while it lasted. We are now on our way down the ridge and getting in position for bait. Lets hope its not a long night and the bait fishing goes well.

Andy Cates

Nov. 16th, 2008

Good evening folks. We left yesterday on our annual 11 day Accurate sponsored trip. Today we spent rigging up and issuing the 50 some Accurate and Cal Star rods that were brought by the gang. The lower banks are the goal here this trip so we are hoping for more success than the last run on big fish.

This is a fly home trip so we can spend our last days down by the Cape if need be. First thing is first try with the ridge tomorrow afternoon and then down further for bait. The weather is great lets hope that continues.

New World Record? Close, But…

Art Green is a retired Newport CPA who fishes for 300-pound tuna. He’s got a brace of those to his credit so far, so maybe it’s not surprising that he appeared at the H&M Landing scales November 14 with what seemed a potential world record in his catch after a 10-day trip aboard the Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates.

The trip was sponsored by Charkbait, and a couple of days were spent on the southern banks searching for the cow tuna that are widely anticipated by the long range fleet this month.

Art got his lunker on one of the banks of The Ridge. The fish was a goldspotted sand bass, and it bit Art’s sardine after he sent it down. On the certified scales, it came in at nine pounds, eight ounces.Green said he put his sardine on an Eagle Claw 9/0 circle hook and heavy 130-pound line. He fished with a Penn 70 VSW reel and a Calstar 6465 XXH rod. Obviously, he was after something a bit larger. He was filling out the IGFA record application paperwork when Bill Roecker left the dock.

Things have changed since the 2007 book came out, so Roecker contacted the IGFA offices in an effort to get more current information, without luck. Then Becky Wright at IGFA returned his call and offered the information that the record in the 2008 book was for Dan Cash’s 10-pound, four-ounce fish. So Art Green, Newport CPA, missed his record, but not by much. He very likely has the second-largest goldspotted sand bass ever caught.

“Our best fishing was off Tosca,” said skipper Cates. “There were a lot of school tuna there, but after ten a.m. it was all marlin. We saw good tuna on black porpoise, but got no response. “We saw some sign of wahoo on the 38,” continued Andy, “but we lost almost every one we hooked. We finished up at Cedros Island and got some good yellowtail on the dropper loop.”

Bill Walsh of Chino Hills won first place for an 81.7-pound tuna he bagged with a sardine on a VMC 6/0 hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 50 SX reel and a Calstar Baby Boomer rod. He said the fight was a brief five minutes.

Robert Puckett of Fallbrook won second place for a 42-pound tuna, and Green took third place for a 41-pound yellowfin

Good morning folks. Yesterday was strike two out in the big fish grounds . We fished dorado in the morning and found that there was more marlin than dorado. But after a little action on nice size fish we headed back down to the big fish grounds to try it again. Unfortunately we had the same results as the day before. We did see one nice school of 100 plus pound fish but no response.

At least we are seeing the sign, maybe as the water cools off they will start to bite as far as what we saw it could be any day. Just bummed it was not yesterday. We are fishing up the beach in hopes of wahoo and other variety, made good mackerel last night at Mag Bay and are ready to go. Now we have wind. Great, its always something.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Nov. 9th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday was a very long trying day. Lots of black porpoise to stop on but very few fish . When we did see a fair amount of tuna they would not respond at all. We saw plenty of life off the edge and it does look encouraging, but the water is still 82 degrees.

We did get a sonar school late and get a few boils. We hooked two fish, broke one off right away and landed a 75 or 80 pound tuna. A long day for one fish. We also picked up 17 dorado off a floating milk crate.

Today we are trying for dorado and then possibly back out for big tuna in the afternoon. I would like to see if we can find that school again

Andy Cates

Nov. 7th, 2008

Good afternoon folks. Yesterday afternoon did not work out on the upper end of the ridge. Lots of skip jack that made the tuna fish next to impossible. First day out we were not in the mood to weed through them just yet. Turned out to be a good thing after today great success. Great fishing on 25 to 40 pound tuna that lasted until 300 in the afternoon . Explosive action on the common dolphin dragging the fish off with the sardines.

We were fortunate to get enough fish to spend the next day which is tomorrow in the big fish grounds hoping to get something started lets hope for everyone sake that is tomorrow.

We will report again then.

Andy Cates

Nov. 5th, 2008

Good morning folks. We just left on a 10 day trip and have moved south out of the rain and enjoying cool but clear sunny weather. Charkbait sponsors this trip and had a great giveaway last night after our safety orientation. With a great load of sardine we are starting on the top end of the Ridge in hopes of some action on school size tuna and yellows, with any luck maybe a few wahoo.

After the last trip down to the Bank I have big fish on the mind and plan on spending a couple of days down below Mag Bay in hopes of sign of Cows to start this beach season off. It sound like there has been a little sign but not much catching. Every week is different and were going to go with that. We will be travelling today and starting sometime tomorrow on the Ridge. The weather looks good and that's half the battle.

We will report again tomorrow

Net Update November 2, 20087

Bank Is Open For Business

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing November 2 after a 14-day open trip with 24 anglers to the Hurricane Bank. His was the third trip of the new season to visit the productive sea mount, and it paid off with 15 cows, or tuna over 200 pounds bringing the season’s score to 40 cows.

Technically, Cates had 14 tuna from the bank; the 15th was a troll fish of 219.6 pounds caught by Brian Massey on a dorado Marauder off Clarion Island. “I was fishing on the corner,” said Massey, “so I was just a little farther back than the other jigs. Usually the big tuna don’t like to come that close to the boat when you’re trolling.” Massey took 45 minutes to finish his jacket-winning troll tuna, and he posed with it in the lineup shot. He said he fished 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectr on a Penn 70 reel and “…an old Calstar glass rod.”

“There’s a lot of fish from 140 to 190 pounds,” said Cates, “so it looks good for future trips. We scratched up some skin (wahoo); almost 100. We got 60 on our last evening at the Hurricane. We lots of smaller tuna off Clarion; really a lot of fish.”

The jackpot winner was Dennis Bidigare of Oscoda, who had a 208 and a 225-pounder to go with his winning 236.4-pound yellowfin. Dennis said he fished with a sardine on a 10/0 ringed Mustad circle hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod.

Ralph Cox of Placentia won second place for a 226-pounder he bagged with a squid under the kite. He fished with a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook on 130-pound Izorline connected to 130-pound Soft Steel line and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a Penn 50 SW reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.

Tim Farrell of Oceanside won third place for a 215.9-pound tuna that beat him up for an hour and 45 minutes. He said he used a sardine under a balloon on a 4/0 Hayabusa hook to take his prizewinner. He fished with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a Penn 50 VSW reel and a Calstar 765 H rod.

Bob Michener of Oxnard bagged a 215.8-pound tuna with a sardine on a 12/0 Mustad hook, 130-pound Hi Seas line, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Zizor Spectra on an Accurate 50 SW reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Wayne Honda of Oceanside scored a 214.9-pound tuna on a flyer and the balloon. He said he used a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook on 130-pound Jin Kai line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with a Tiagra 80 and a 755 XXH rod.  “It looked to me like the best deal there was fishing the kite and the balloon with sardines,” commented the long-time Rooster angler.

Al Jackson of Buena Park had a 212 and a 208-pounder. He fished with sardines on 6/0 Super Mutu hooks. He said he used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Fred Wakefield of N. Tustin took a 209-pounder on a flying fish under a balloon. He baited the flyer on a Mustad 8/0 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Momoi and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with a Penn 80 reel and a Calstar 7460 XH rod.

Al Babashoff of La Habra Heights took home a 206-pound tuna. He got it with a flying fish under a big balloon, on a 5/0 ringed Mutu hook on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a LRS 50 reel and a 755 XXH rod. “It took an hour,” said Al. “It was at night.”

Joe Stickles of Orange caught a 203.8-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 SDuper Mutu ringed hook on 130-pound Momoi line, 130-pound Line One Spectra, a Penn 70 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Mike Massey of Cottage Grove, OR slipped into the ranks of the famed with a 200.6-pound tuna. He fished a “squish” under the kite on a 9/0 Mustad 7699 hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra. He used a Penn 70 VSX reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod.

Good morning folks. As we left the bank we were short stopped with a shot on wahoo. Picking up 60 out of a few stops that brought great action. It did not leave us with much room but after the first afternoon at Clarion that did not look to be a problem.

The next day at clarion we saw sign of mostly smaller fish 25 to 80 pounders. With hopes of picking off a bigger one it did not look good. One stop we were graced with one bigger fish, a 240 that just about finished off the trip.

The inspection at the camp went very smooth and we are looking forward to that fishery later this month as we have a 14 day trip that leaves after Thansgiving. With the prospects of the Bank and now the Island, it looks like it may be good. Check out our two 10 day trips that are open for booking! December 12th, Izorline/ Accurate/ Calstar Sponsor will have outfits that will be provided! The New Years special leaving December 26th can add a nice change to spending your new year's fishing on the Red Rooster!

We are travelling up and the weather is great, it looks like we may get a break and have this weather all the way. here's to things don't change.

Good morning folks. We left the Bank last night after another great afternoon. Only a few chances on cows and came up with three fish at or over 200 for the day. The evening brought that 175 to 195 class of fish that bit. Not wide open but a nice pick on the kite and fly line sardine.

We left with some room in the center fish hold and are heading into Clarion to see if we can get lucky and finish off with a few lunkers. We will be at the Island after lunch, check in with the camp and spend today and tomorrow at the Island.

We will report again .

Oct. 27th, 2008

Good morning folks. Conditions changed and we found ourselves on the upper end of the bank. The move paid off and we had a shot on Big fish . Once again mostly low 200's but a handful of fish up to 230 pounds for the day and threw down another 15 fish from 160 to 190. A little slower but half the day we were on the wrong end of the bank. The bigger fish moved up. Dennis Bidigare chased one down in the skiff right up until dark for another 200 pounder under his belt.

So far this morning not much a couple of fish in the high hundreds and still waiting for conditions to straighten out.

Oct. 26th, 2008

Good morning folks. Another day of good fishing at the Bank. Yesterday the overall grade was better but only three fish in the low two hundreds from 203 to 218. 25 other fish from 170 to 195 and just a couple smaller. Very few releases just a couple of the low hundreds fish. A few more wahoo today 11 caught on the anchor on Catchy 33 and bait. So far today not much but it is early and we are hoping for that nice grade of fish like yesterday.

Oct. 25th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday was a very nice day of fishing. A nice steady scratch on really good grade fish. There were enough big fish mixed in through the day to keep everyone on their toes. 8 fish from 200 to 235 pounds and steady on 135 to 180 pound tuna. The flyers were the ticket and good thing because there were plenty to go around last night resupplying our bait for today.

Good weather has also made it nice although it is a bit hot.

We will report again tomorrow

Oct. 24th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday showed signs of having a great trip down here with an excellent grade of fish to work with. We arrived a little late with fighting the uphill current the entire way down and did not get the anchor down until after lunch. Fish started to show and started to bite with a couple of fish in the two hundred pound class and Ralph Cox hauling in a 224. Most of the better size fish came until about 300 and then the current died and it was mostly 130 to 160 pound fish. A nice afternoon to get started with. We will se what happens here today with the live flyers on balloon and kite we will keep you posted,

Good morning folks. Squid fishing has not been the best but we have managed to catch about 40 in the last two nights . we were hoping for better but we continued on down. Our timing is a little off with very poor speed most of the way down. We will be arriving at lunch time tomorrow . Everybody is ready to go and anxious for what the Bank may bring.

We will report again

Oct. 20th, 2008

Good evening folks. We left yesterday and picked up a nice load of bait with cool weather and an eager bunch of anglers. This 14 day trip was originally the first trip down to the bank.

With the success in the past 8 years it has now lured other boats down in hopes of similar success. The reports from the 105 sounded good and with a seasoned group we should have a good shot at cows. We will find out and know by the end of the week. Today we spent doing maintenance and rigging for tomorrows seminar on fishing the big tuna. We rigged up for fishing squid and will be giving it a try tonight.

We will report again tomorrow.

To the Red Rooster 3 staff,

I just wanted to thank everyone inlvolved for the great trip that I had on the Catchy Tackle 10 day Oct. 8-18. This was my third trip in 2 years on your boat and it did not disappoint. Andy, Joe, Tom, Nick, Fernando, Moses, Jose, and John were some of the nicest, friendliest and most helpful people I have ever met. Their enthusiasm for the passengers on the boat was outstanding. I especially thank Joe, Tom, Nick and Moses for their help and enthusiasm. Those guys made me feel right at home and gladly answered any questions that I had. Because of your outstanding operation I plan on being back again in March for the Loftus and Martin 15 day trip. (The deposit is in the mail.)  I tell everyone here in Kansas about your operation and have encouraged some of my friends to make the trip to California with me next year.
I have attached a picture that was taken with me and a wahoo I caught. I think it really shows the positive attitude and good hearted fun that the crew show their passengers. Thank you once again and I look forward to seeing everyone in March.

Sincerely,
Jeff Cakin

Good morning folks. We worked our way up after a great day of Dorado fishing but only found 2 wahoo to go with the mobs of Dorado. Our morning started with yellowtail fishing and surprised to see fast action on wahoo. After the smoke cleared we had 42 nice size wahoo and a lot of worn out guys in the flat calm heated up weather. What a great way to finish a trip. Better late than never.

We are on our way up with great weather and should be in at 7:00 in the morning. We will see you then

Oct. 15th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday the effort was focused down around Mag Bay. A lot of off color water and very little sign of wahoo. The tuna showed in the morning but still the same size fish as what we have been catching 20 to 35 pounders . Nice fish but we have enough. Outside in deep water there was sign of a little bigger fish with one of our code boats Excel catching a couple of fish up to 100 pounds. We made our way out there but did not come up with any Jack Pot fish still once again the same grade as before. With just a couple of hours we hoped to get lucky.

We moved up the line and found a kelp and limited on Dorado but so far no sign of wahoo. Dorado were good fish 15 to 20 pounders with a few bigger. We have the rest of the day to look for wahoo on kelps and hoping to see sign soon.

We will report again tomorrow.

Oct. 14th, 2002

Good morning folks. We did a ridge run yesterday with great weather and good action on basically what we caught up the beach. Not much wahoo only a couple of strikes. But still more of the school size tuna and school size yellowtail. With the reports from the rocks being poor we decided to take advantage of the weather and proceed further south looking below Mag Bay for areas of birds, Dorado, wahoo, and maybe a few marlin as well as more of this epic weather.

We will report again tomorrow.

Oct 12, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a nice day on school size tuna from 20 to 35 pounds . explosive action and quite a chore with 20 plus knots of wind. we spent the afternoon in a sheltered cove and scratched 60 smaller grade yellows and a few more tuna. The weather has been an issue but seems a little better today. Things are supposed to settle down in the next couple of days. So far this morning we have caught 24 yellows from 25 to 40 pounds, a nice little surprise to start the day. We plan on fishing the tuna for a little bit and then work down the beach looking for more action on yellows and hopefully a couple of wahoo.

We will report again tomorrow

Oct. 10, 2008

Good afternoon folks. Yesterday we had a slow day, kind of a travel and fish day that found us some nice size kelps with not much fish. 20 dorado after a few big kelps in 72 degree water. Not all that great.

This morning we had a sample on wahoo and landed 6 and missed a few other chances, Action this afternoon has been tuna offshore from 18 to 35 pounds a couple of decent drifts and stops has paid off with 80 fish so far. Pretty good action right when you get on them and then tapers off. We will probably do this again tomorrow and wait for the hurricane to blow through and then head south. It is to hit land tomorrow afternoon. We will report again tomorrow.

Net Update September 28, 2008

Winner Gets His Best

“He just took off when he bit,” said Tony Kaleikilo of Ventura at the H&M Landing scales, “and it seemed like he went a quarter of a mile before he slowed down; I was about to get spooled. Oh, yeah, he’s my best fish ever.”

Tony’s yellowfin, caught aboard Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates, weighed 95 pounds even; a big fish for light line. Cates hung it on the scales September 28, after the five-day Arnie Cohen charter with 27 anglers.

Kaleikilo’s yellowfin took a sardine on a 3/0 Super Mutu hook, tied to 30-pound Ande line and 80-pound Izor Spectra. He said he fished with a Penn Torque 3/0 reel and a Truline six-foot rod.

Ewell “Butch” Frazier of Long Beach won second place for a 53.7-pound tuna, and Eric Rojas of Northridge took third place for a 51.8-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.

“We had a couple of lucky kelps,” said skipper Cates, “with a lot of 20 to 30-pound tuna. The big ones off the island were hard to come by, but of a very good quality.”

Like other skippers in San Diego’s long range fleet, Cates is feeling positive about the prospects for a good snap on the larger model tuna at the big island some time in the near future.

Sept. 27th, 2008

Good evening folks. Yesterday ended with frustration. Watching 50 to 100 pound fish boil and jump all around the boat for just a couple of bites. Very good fish on porpoise but no takers. Balloons and kite both failed to get a bite. We finished the day with 68 of the 25 pound fish a few yellows and just a couple of tuna around 50 pounds. Maybe next week they will be back on the bite.

With a nice catch of tuna aboard we came into San Martin and found cold water but more tuna on the outside. We drove away from them looking for yellowtail that were not available. We are on our way home and looks like it will be better weather than last night.

Andy Cates

Sept. 26th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we only had one chance at bigger fish and spend most of the hitting the porpoise with very little response. One stop earned us 8 of the better size fish from 40 to 85 pounds. We have the Jack pot settled and are hoping for more weigh ins today. Right now we are getting a shot on the smaller grade fish after multiple spots of porpoise we decided to drop the anchor and spend the morning with action.

After lunch we will get back on the move and hunt down the better size fish and hopefully they are in the mood to bite.

Good evening folks. We started our 5 day trip offshore and it worked out very well. Wide open style fishing on tuna and dorado until the evening. Nice size fish.30 to 30 pound tuna and 12 to 20 pound dorado.

Really a great way to start a trip. With everyone catching fish today it puts us in a position to go out to Guadalupe and focus on trophies. Lets hope it works out.

Good morning folks.

Not much doing the last morning at the Island. Rough weather and poor conditions on the North end. The day before we had another nice day with biggest fish a little over 100 pounds. Good action on the anchor up until dark.

The weather was an issue yesterday and made for a poor ride home. Luckily we had the football games to watch throughout the afternoon. We will be in for a day and then back out on another 5 day . That will finish up the season and bring us into the 10 day trips. Time for another change.

Andy Cates

Sept. 18th, 2008

Good evening folks. We put together another nice day with quality fish up close to 90 pounds. The morning was best with one drift for 37 fish from 40 to 90 pounds. Kite action and balloon action were available. The 50 pound test with the Seaguar Flourocarbon was also the ticket. In the afternoon we tried for yellows with not much success and then just a few tuna late to end with 49 four the day. We are going to try it again tomorrow and hope for similar results.

Sept. 18th, 2008

Good morning folks. We started the second fall season 5 day trip offshore. Most of the day was spotty with just a couple of kelps with very little fish. With scattered jig strikes that served to stop the shortly throughout the day. The afternoon brought the heavy action. With the help from the guys kelp that was marked from the day before, we found excellent action on 22 to 28 pound tuna and nice size Dorado in the mix. Thanks to Brian and Sam on the American Angler we were able to spot this kelp paddy with a marker that they had marked the day before. Wide open tuna fishing was experienced 2 days in a row from two different boats, Now that's team work.

With a nice catch on offshore fish we decided to head to Guadalupe in search of trophy size tuna. With the reports from the last few days the prospects look goo on tuna up to 90 pounds. Lets hope it continues. We will be getting started soon as it is 3:30 in the morning an our arrival is set for 5:00.

Report will hopefully be good after today

We had a very nice day today on better grade Yellowfin Tuna, exactly what we where hoping for when we came out to Guadalupe Island. We are going to try for a few more trophy's in the morning and call it a trip. Our weather has been picture perfect the entire day and we are keeping our fingers crossed that this flat calm condition graces us for the ride home. I will report our final morning's results tomorrow evening including our ETA for Monday morning.

Sept. 12th, 2008

Today was picture perfect yellowtail fishing. A beautiful Baja California back drop and limit style fishing in balmy weather.  Things are going very well. We headed offshore in the afternoon for good action on Dorado, Skipjack and small Yellowfin Tuna as we dead west to try for a few trophies.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Sept. 11th, 2008

The fishing was very good offshore today on 18-30 lb. Yellowfin tuna, it was a great way to start our trip.  We are heading down the coast hoping to continue our good fortune with some Yellowtail fishing.  Out weather today was good fishing weather with 10-12 knots of wind , 2-3 foot seas and clear skies.

We departed today at Noon on the annual Izorline 5 Day trip from Lee Palm Sportfishers. We took on a beautiful load of sardine's and cleared Point Loma 1330 hours and began heading south. Once outside the harbor we had our normal safety talk in the galley and also covered the working aspects of the boat, once everyone was familiar with the Red Rooster III we spent the rest of the afternoon going over the fishing and rigging our tackle for the next few days of angling. We have nice weather, great bait along with eager passengers and crew. We will try to get things started in the morning looking for offshore species, wish us luck.

Good morning folks.

Yesterday we finished up on a kelp that seemed to be a gift from God. With very nice grade dorado and yellowfin it ended the day great. After all morning of short stops on small kelps and jig strikes on scattered tuna we hit the mother load. Its always nice to end a trip on a good note and that we did. The tuna were all nice fish 22 to 28 pounds to go along with the grade of dorado we have yet to see. The boat leaves on a five day trip today and John Grabowski will be taking it out while I take a short break.

We will see you in a week

Sept. 9th, 2008

Good morning folks.

Yesterday was an all day affair slow one to three at a time. We made numerous moves around the Island and found that the best thing to do was sit a accept the fact that it is slow. 90 yellows for the day and a few Jack pot fish mixed in. All in all it was tough but we spent a lot of time at the rail and fished all day. Today we are offshore and once again finding spotty fishing with scattered jig strikes on tuna and dorado on kelps. We are getting fish they don't come fast.

Sept. 8th, 2008

Good morning folks. We spent the day on the outside Island for similar results of what has been going on. We were hoping for some kind of change of biting fish but not the case.

We got on one spot that looked good for a while but they slowly stopped biting and boiled all around the boat for no bite. Landing 16 tuna and 5 yellowtail did not make it worthy to stay. We are headed to Benitos and are hoping for a good day of yellowtail fishing. The weather is much better and working conditions are good. Lets hope it pays off.

Andy Cates

Christina,

Thank you for your help with the arrangements for the recent trip my group took on the Red Rooster III.  The staterooms were very comfortable and we all enjoyed the trip. The captain and crew of the Red Rooster III did an excellent job with our group; they were probably the best crew of any boat on which I have fished. This trip was a mixture of both business and pleasure. Would it be possible for you to send me an e-mail, or mail me a receipt, confirming this amount?  This documentation would be very helpful for tax purposes.

Also, attached is a photo from our trip.  My son is doing some photo shop work to “scrub” up this photo a little.  If you would like to use it on your website, I would be happy to send you a final copy when it is done.  Other than cropping, the attached photo has not been “touched up.”  The Dorado in this photo had spectacular color-I think Dorado are the most beautiful fish in the ocean.  We obtained many good photos from this trip but the size and color of this big bull Dorado made this picture the best of all those taken on the trip.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Ben Greer

Dear Linda, Andy and the Crew of The Red Rooster III,

I cannot emphasize enough of what a tremendous effort Captain Andy Cates and his Crew put forth for our four-day trip no.15, 2008.  As you know, it was the first multi-day trip for my sons Nic (16 yrs. old) and Jack (14 yrs. old).  I was also fortunate to have my Father aboard to complete the attendance of three generations of my family together on this great trip.  It will always be a special memory for us, I am very grateful.

This was my ninth trip with the Red Rooster III and I am so looking forward to the next one.  I can truly say my boys are “hooked” and won’t stop talking about this one for a long time.  Thank you for making it so special!  Please see attached photos of your “future regulars”.

Best of luck and kind regards,

Robb Rinella

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had great fishing with sustained action right up until dark. Fishing spots of frenzied yellows with great surface action and excitement.

Everyone would have one on in the beginning of the stops. We had a couple of hits on the anchor as well with some dropper loop action but the Yo-Yo jig was the best bet. We left there after dark and headed up looking offshore. Hopefully we can find a kelp with some Dorado action

Good evening folks. We left Guadalupe and are heading in to fish yellows. We had chances at some real nice fish today unfortunately not much to show for it. One fish broke off right at gaff that looked to be 130 pounds. 30 pound test just won't do it. 18 other tuna and 8 yellows made our day. We left early to get inside for a full day of fishing and looking for some action after a trying first day. Most of the tuna landed today were in the 25 pound class and the same on the yellows.

We will report again tomorrow

Good afternoon folks.

We finished off our three day trip with good action on Yellowfin, albacore and a few yellows. The outstanding fish were a 46 pound albacore and second was a 40 pound Bluefin. yellowfin took up third with 30 pounds. The yellowfin on the inner banks are nice fish. average is 25 to 30 pounds. Fun fishing on porpoise schools and occasional sonar marks.

We left today on a 4 day trip and are heading down to start off at the Island tomorrow We will report again tomorrow.

Aug. 27th, 2008

Good morning folks.  Yesterday we caught a mix of yellowfin and bluefin starting on the outside banks in the morning and ending up on the inside banks in the afternoon.

Most of the Bluefin were 15 to 20 pounds with a couple in the 30 pound range. The yellowfin were all in the 25 to 30 plus pound range. Today we will finish up this 3 day trip on the inside in search of more of that nice yellowfin.

Hello,

I finally had a minute to sit down and write this, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire crew on the RR3 on the outstanding trip I had. The fishing was marginal at best but the professionalism of the staff from top to bottom was truly a treat for me. Every aspect of the trip was great. From the captain choosing the bait at the barge and hauling it over the rail (never seen that before) to the crew's willingness to help everyone with what ever they needed. I often hear the words, we are here to help just let us know! but rarely see it. I own a business in which our service is first and foremost so I appreciated this very much. Your boat truly gets it, take care of the customer and the customer will take care
of you.

I look forward to becoming a regular on your boat next year as much as I can get on her. I was on the 1.5 day departing 8/22. I stayed that Sunday in S.D. when I came back that evening your guys really surprised by allowing my kids to check out the boat quickly before your next trip, couldn't thank you enough for that. Well thanks again see you next year.

Sincerely, Todd Kurten

Good afternoon folks. Yesterday we had great yellowtail fishing from sunrise until we finished at lunch time, excellent action on 12 to 18 pound fish and most were taken on the Yo -Yo jig. We took off from that and headed offshore and found mixed sizes of dorado that a lot were released and the better ones were kept. Picking off 75 dorado in not the best conditions. All of the wind made the offshore scene tough, but we managed.

Today we finished off with a kelp that brought us more action on yellows, dorado and a couple of little Bluefin also 3 more 18 pound yellowfin. It was a nice way to end the trip. We will be coming out tomorrow night on a 1.5 day trip and the weather looks to be good for that . Lets hope the fishing is as well.

Aug. 19th, 2008

Good morning folks.

Yesterday started off grim, with very little yellowtail on different shallows. Warm water may of had them off the bite. And I mean warm. We fished offshore and were hit with heavy winds that shut us down late afternoon. We never could find a kelp with the tough conditions but got random strikes on nice size dorado and one ripper stop that brought yellowfin from 18 to 25 pounds. It was good while it lasted, boiling right on the corner and showing brown through the stern.

After 45 fish they just disappeared. Thankful for what we got we worked down and continued to get strikes on Dorado and picked up one that must be close to 50 pounds. A real Bull. So far this morning we have had great yellowtail fishing on 12 to 18 pound fish and with the weather better today looking to spend the rest of the afternoon looking for kelps offshore.

We will report again tomorrow

Aug.18th, 2008

Good evening folks. Today was more of the same offshore. Scattered strikes on tuna and spotty fishing on kelps.

We had good weather and good conditions only no schools . We are headed down and fishing yellowtail tomorrow , looks like its going to be warm weather so we will be ready.

We will report again tomorrow

Aug. 17th, 2008

Good morning folks.

We just finished of a 1.5 day trip and we are now out on a five day.

We are going to spend the day offshore and outside the tracks that have been previously covered. Seems to be a lot of small fish on the inside so we will try out here. Sounds like a good prospect we will soon find out.

Andy Cates

Dear Andy & crew,

I know we didn’t catch a lot of fish this weekend but despite that , you & your crew are at a different level of service , true PROFESSIONALs.

The Ochse family as you know comes in groups of 3, hence I have to fish with my boys and it can get very expensive. This being said and the poor fish counts the boat had this weekend August 15th    17th    you and your crew are true professionals and understand the product & service you are selling. As you may recall we fish the First-string with Bradley over the last 10yr since my boys have been 5 years old.

You and your crew (The Red Rooster) set a new standard in comfort, this being said I enjoyed myself even though I got skunked but yet Spencer & Blake did get 3 fish between them. I also want to say that the front office Christina & Linda are outstanding and represent the Red Rooster very well; it’s NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY unlike the H&M front office !

Enclosed pictures , you don’t need to post these on you web-site as these are small fish , Steve Lamb is also an outstanding cook and a joy to talk to as is all your crew. I can’t say enough after 10 to 15 yrs of fishing out of Pt Loma sport fishing fleet , the RED Roster is #1 in my book and I will recommend it top all my friends.

I look forward to fishing with you again on a long range trip which I have consider before but never thought I could stay on a boat longer than 2 days. I am now considering doing a 10 day trip!!!!!!

Good morning folks.

Yesterday we had great yellowtail action down at Cedros. Anchor fishing in the morning and then school fishing on bird schools all afternoon.

Conditions have not been very good , a lot of cold water with rip currents and dirty water. We were very thankful for the day we had. School size fish were 15 to 18 pounds with a few bigger ones mixed in. Today we are fishing kelps in hopes of yellowfin and dorado . Looking in a little different water to try and locate the tuna that seem to slowly be moving up in our range .

Any day now we should start seeing more and more yellowfin on kelps and scattered strikes. Until then we will keep searching.

Aug. 8th, 2008

Good afternoon folks. We are on our first day of a five day trip and so far not much to report. We are looking on the way down and have gone through some great looking water. Only to find small yellowtail and dorado on kelps. Very few keeper fish. We are headed towards Bonitos and will be there at 4:30 in the afternoon. We are hoping for a shot there before dark. Anything will help.

The weather is back to great and we are enjoying the thought of more to come. West Coast anglers sponsored the trip and we had a great raffle 1st night that included lots of tackle and two fishing rods. Everyone was a winner.

We will report again tomorrow

Another successful Ono Custom Rods 5 Day Trip. We want to thank Rolf Johnson from Ono Custom Rods and a great group of anglers.  We plan on seeing you again next year at this time.

Aug. 6th, 2008,

Today we are checking kelps again on our trip home from San Benitos/Cedros Islands.  There was great action on the yellows for the entire day yesterday and then we started up the line around 7 PM.  Not much on the kelps so far today.  We did get our trolling jackpot settled.  We found a couple of stray yellowfin tuna this morning.

Aug. 5th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a slow morning with very little sign of tuna. Our yellowtail spot from last trip saved our day with 68 nice size yellows and then died at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Don't forget to bring some muscle when you fight these yellows.  Taken control of the fight before the yellows know what is happening.  When fishing big yellows around structure keep their head up other wise they will find the rocks or the kelp.

We went back and looked for tuna and tried a couple of anchor jobs for nothing and left. Today we are at Cedros and have had decent action in the morning. Nice grade of fish 18 to 28 pounds. The sea lions are not a problem yet and we hope to pick here the rest of the day.

Aug. 4th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday was our first day of fishing. We spent the day offshore and found great results on kelp paddy fishing. Seems to be more Dorado than yellows now but the action was definitely there. The typical kelp size fish with a few standouts throughout the day. One tip for you anglers is you do not want to drop in early on these kelps.  Dropping in early usually ends up in massive tangles.  Most of the larger fish taken of the kelps are hooked after the small fish have charged the boat. The large dorado cruise back about 50 feet off the stern so a good cast with a hot bait will get you the better size fish on these kelps. Try the yo-yo iron if you want a keeper size yellowtail. With fish on the boat we decided to head out and see if we could come up with a few Jack pot fish.

So far nothing doing but the conditions are good and we have all day. Good weather we just need fish We will report again tomorrow.

Good morning and welcome to our annual Ono Custom Rods 5 Day.  Looks like we have another great group of anglers again this year.  A nice mix of fathers and sons or daughters, couples and some of our regular riders.  We are heading downhill to try the kelps for Yellowtail and Dorado.

Good morning folks. We finished off yesterday with action on an afternoon kelp. We saw Killer whales blowing through the kelp eating the small yellows and dorado. Really churning things up. It lasted until we got up to the kelp and gave the people a birds eye view of Killer whales in action. We stopped after the whales were finished and picked up 31 dorado and a few keeper size yellows. It was a nice way to finish off the trip. Good weather on the way home for a nice relaxing evening.

Aug. 1st. 2008,

Good morning folks, We had a great day yesterday. A big surprise with 30 to 45 pound yellows starting at 10:30 in the morning until 5:00 in the evening. Great surface action and great sunny weather. Only 1 tuna for the day, about 45 pounds. We tried and looked at a couple of areas and did see sign of tuna but no bites. The yellowtail bite was what the day was all about finishing with 93 of the big fish. Today we are offshore looking for kelps, hoping for some dorado or tuna. We still have good weather and a full day to complete this 4 day trip.

We will find out tomorrow

Hopefully things continue to progress. The weather has been great the whole trip and looks to be good for another day.
We will be leaving tomorrow on another 4 day trip and hoping for similar results as this last trip. See you then

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a great day of kelp fishing. Dorado and yellowtail throughout the day with just a couple of lulls in the action until we got on more kelps. Jim Casey would like to thank the sponsors of the trip including, Izorline, Salas jigs, Lead master, West Coast marketing, Owner hooks and Seaguar Flourocarbon.

So far today it has been slow only 7 tuna , but we did get our Jack pot fish up to 70 pounds the other contenders were in the 30 pound class. Nice weather out here and hoping for some action tomorrow to finish off with.

July 25th, 2008

Good evening folks. Another 4 day trip and after that struggle yesterday offshore we are headed down the beach to fish kelps for yellows, dorado and school size yellowfin tuna. Yesterday was an all day affair with 15 albacore 8 bluefin and 8 yellowfin for the day. Not good but could have been worse. At least the weather was good. The kelp thing seems to be the best bet and from the day we had kelp hopping last trip I would say it is a lot more consistent than the albacore area.

Although you never know.

Yellows were up to 25 pounds but mostly the typical kelp size being 12 to 18 pounds. The action was needed after the first day of short stopping on small tuna and a few albacore.

Today we are back at it. In search of tuna. With the reports of a sign and a little fish caught we will start were the guys left off yesterday and go from there. We will report again tomorrow.

July 23rd, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we spent the day offshore in hopes of action on albacore . The day was a bit of a disappointment with only 9 albacore 23 small BFT and a hand full of yellowfin. Should have been there yesterday. Being the first day of a 4 day we do have time to recover and we are hoping to do so today with some kelp paddy fishing. Looking for yellows, dorado and yellowfin in the warmer water.

The weather is real nice so we could not blame that on the fishing and looks to be nice the next couple of days.

We scratched out a day today and it really did not get started until the 13th hour. As a group we where off the fish for the majority of the day, mid afternoon we all spread out and went out trying to relocate the area of fish we had been working on the past few days and at around 1600 we got back on the fish. With basically nothing on board for the day at that point we rallied to put together a day landing 49 mixed Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna to finish out our short 3 day trip, the grade is a very impressive 18 to 50 pounds. All in all it was a good trip with a nice catch of quality tuna which we worked on over a two day period in fantastic flat calm weather. The crew of the Red Rooster would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Glenn Kerr for organizing another outstanding group of fisherman, we will see everyone next year if not sooner.

We are currently fishing on the 3 Day Glenn's Alignment Trip which departed Friday July 18, 2008 and will return Monday morning July 21. 2008 at 0830. Fishing yesterday ( Saturday) was just perfect for this 3 day trip, we had 105 mixed Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna and everything was in the 18 to 45 pound range. Our weather is brochure perfect and by all predictions should continue to be favorable through the remainder of the voyage. I will report back Sunday evening with the final results of our last day of fishing, please wish us luck.

Our ETA tomorrow should be 0800 back at Lee Palm Sportfishers.

Good fishing this afternoon on 20-40 pound Yellowtail, in very nice weather. We are anchored up for the night and will give this another try tomorrow.  We will then head offshore Thursday in hopes of locating a new area of tuna fish.

July 14th, 2008

The fishing was on the tough side offshore today for albacore and bluefin tuna, we covered a tremendous amount of water for twenty two Albacore and nine bluefin tuna. We are currently headed southeast with our sights for the time being set on some coastal yellowtail fishing. The weather is good and we have plenty of time to make a catch on quality fish, we are hoping the offshore tuna seen takes a swing for the better for our trip north.

We departed on the annual Newell 5 day trip. After getting what appears to be a nice load of bait we cleared Point Loma at 1430 hrs. and headed south. We had our safety talk and tackle seminar on offshore fishing all rolled into one and by 1900 hrs. We had jigs in the water looking for to get the skunk off the boat. Right at dark we got into an area of bait and had one stop for 8 Albacore tuna, the trip is started. We will be trying for Albacore, Bluefin tuna tomorrow and take it from here, weather is good with 12 knots of wind from the west.

Good morning folks. Yesterday we spent most of the day fishing our way up, hitting kelp paddies and various spots of small Bluefin tuna. Finally getting up to the local grounds for albacore to get great action and even finish off with a sundowner biting in the corner. The hits are fast and furious and then gone. But what an exciting way to finish up a great 8 day trip.
The boat leaves on a 5 day today and John Grabowski will be at the helm. Good luck John the prospects look good.

Good morning folks. Yesterday we were surprised with a nice afternoon on jumbo size yellows. A little hit in the morning on smaller fish and then an eruption of bigger fish in the afternoon. Not big numbers, 35 for the afternoon but when you get one of these 30 to 45 pound yellows it is well worth it.

This morning we had a similar show and picked up 30 jumbo yellows and now it is dead. Hopefully we get another shot this afternoon before we head up to finish offshore.

We will report again tomorrow.

July 9th, 2008

Good evening folks. We left the rocks after lunch and another nice day of fishing. We kept 37 tuna from 30 to 90 pounds and a bunch of releases on the smaller grade. No wahoo today on our way out and really no sign. No bite offs or short bites.
Most of the bigger fish today came from squid whether it be fly line or kite or on the balloon. A couple of fish on the yummy flyer. We are headed up to Cedros and will be there mid morning.

July 8th, 2008

Good evening folks. We arrived at the rocks yesterday after lunch and commenced excellent action on 15 to 22 pound tuna . We started to get a few better fish from 50 to 90 pounds ending the evening with 7 of the better grade tuna. Bait fishing went well with a supply of squid for the next day.

Today we were surprised to see more 50 to 90 pound fish that responded well to the squid on the kites. From day break until 200 in the afternoon we had 45 tuna from 50 to close to 100 pounds and a few in the 25 to 35 pound range. Releasing the smaller fish throughout the day to stay under our Quota. There were plenty of bites fly lining the sardines so the kite was not the only game. After 200 we spent some time trolling and picked up 6 wahoo up to 45 pounds to top off a great second day of fishing.

We are staying and giving it another try tomorrow.

We will report aging now that our connection is back on line Andy Cates

July 4th, 2008

Good morning folks.

We left the Island yesterday after another great morning of action on yellows and three nice Halibut to go with. Bigger trophy size yellows early and then drifts on the 15 to 20 pound fish later. We had enough fish by 1030 and decided to head up and try for albacore. We are still making our way up and should be in the grounds by 100 in the morning. Hopefully we can scrape up a couple of albies for each person. The weather is flat calm with a great ride up.

July 3rd, 2008

Good morning folks. We were pleasantly surprised when we rolled in to the Island and found great action on 15 to 20 pound yellows. Surface iron action as well as flyline and dropper loop. As the day continued we scratched at better size yellows up to 42 pounds including 3 white seabass. With nice yellows up until dark we decided to stay and give it another half day before we start to run up. And what a great night sleep it was last night.

So far this morning we have picked of 3 nice halibut and a dozen or so good grade yellows. No seabass yet but it would be nice to throw a few in the mix.

Good morning folks.

The weather came up and made for a very uncomfortable day. We scratched about 20 school size tuna in the morning and took off at lunch time. The course line up to Cedros made for a rocky afternoon . Now things have changed , nice weather and ready for breakfast. We will be up at the Island at about 7:30 and look forward to a day of drifting in calm waters.

No more wahoo strikes yesterday but still good life even with the heavy wind, Hopefully new fish will start to pour in for the upcoming trip.

July 1st, 2008

Good morning folks, Yesterday was similar to the day before. Great action on 15 to 20 pound fish with the biggest fish about 45 pounds. Fun fishing on school size tuna. With a surprise we had chances on wahoo and managed to land 5, 40 plus pound whoo's With the chance of getting a few more wahoo we decide to stay another day and get a few more tuna and hopefully a few more wahoo.
Last night produced 22 yellowtail from 18 to 35 pounds. That was a decent surprise as well. We plan on leaving here today and finishing our trip up at Cedros. Hopefully the Island is on the upswing and we see god action.

June 30th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we found good action on 15 to 20 pound yellowfin with one bigger fish about 40 pounds. No yellows mixed in but then again we only spent the afternoon on the anchor. No wahoo yet but with the great conditions down here it could be soon.

We are anchored up here again and waiting to see what happens, we see some smaller fish around and hoping the big ones move in. If we have another day like yesterday we will be looking for something else tomorrow possibly Cedros for yellows.

We are headed south and starting at Alijos Rocks. We are making poor speed with this tremendous uphill current, it has been a fight all day.
We won't get to the rocks until just before lunch time. We are hoping some new fish moved in with the 71.6 degree water we saw out there the other day and maybe a few wahoo. The weather is nice and warm and smooth going.

Good afternoon folks. Alijos did not work out. Conditions have gotten very good and attractive for fish. That's the good news. The bad news is the tuna were small and a lot of Skip Jack. We trolled tirelessly trying for the first wahoo of the year but failed. 70 degree water is definitely a step in the right direction so any day now we hope. With two more 8 day trips ahead of us the Rocks will hopefully change.
Today was fun for us with good skiff action on Calicos and action on yellows on the big boat. Some nice bass up to 9 pounds and yellows up to 30 pounds. Yellowtail releases were common today but nothing like down on the ridge.  Tomorrow we plan on heading up and looking offshore in hopes of tuna. We will report again then

June 25th, 2008

Good morning folks. We fished offshore yesterday afternoon after a great morning of yellowtail fishing. We never did find anything of note. 12 to 15 pound tuna  at best, a couple of small Dorado and little yellows. We are now leaving Alijos after a dismal half day that included skip Jack and little tuna. We Trolled it up in hopes of a stray wahoo but even with the 70 degree water there were none.
Yellowtail is not on the list after the last couple of days and brings us heading up the line. Tomorrow we plan on fishing in the skiffs at the south end of Cedros for Bass . Something different should be enjoyable for all. Hopefully the weather holds .

June 23rd, 2008

Good morning folks. We had excellent yellowtail fishing down here yesterday. All the guys were choosey on what they kept and most all of the fish were in the 20 to 32 pound range. 15 pounders were the bottom end and there was a lot of releasing. Surface iron and flyline sardine were the ticket. Flat calm hot weather to give it the classic Baja experience.

The Grade here this morning seems the same if not better, more flurries on the big fish is what we are experiencing.

This afternoon we plan on heading out to the west and look for kelp paddies and whatever else we may find. With this nice warm water in here offshore might work out.

We will report again tomorrow.

June 22nd, 2008

Good morning folks.

Yesterday we had a slow day with the conditions at the Island kind of off. Cooler water and a south swell churning things up was my theory on the lack of production. With visions of a southern tack after the morning look we decided to keep heading down. The remainder of the boats at the Island did scratch out days on mixed grade fish, but with our length of trip we decided to look at other prospects. Hopefully it works out.

We will be on the ridge this morning in search of action on nice grade yellows and school size tuna .

We will soon find out what its all about.

We did see excellent sign of yellows up on the beach but at this stage of the trip 10 to 15 pounders would not do.

June 21st, 2008

Good morning folks.

We spent the day offshore and had similar results as to what has been going on. We saw decent sign of Bluefin and fair sign of small albacore , and I mean small 8 to 10 pounders . At that size they don't get kept. We had 11 bluefin biggest fish around 35 pounds with a few small ones . Not good by any means but hopefully in the near future they will go on the bite.

We decided to bail out and head down to Cedros were we will spend the day and then take it from there Andy Cates

June 12th, 2008

Good afternoon folks. We left last night after a couple of nice days fishing.

Yesterday the Jack Pot was settled with Leo Reihsen ,after a long ride in the Skiff landed a 286. Followed by Al Jackson with a 266 and winning him an Accurate Boss reel. Jesse Baker came in with a 235 and Bob Cherry with a 207. Another 12 fish from 100 to 185 pounds With David Wilson with a nice 187 pounder.

The day before was similar but less fish over 200 pound, none the less the chances were there.  The weather is beautiful and looks nice up above lets hope it holds.

June 10th, 2008

Good morning folks, the last two days we have managed to get 20 tuna a day on the outside of Clarion. Yesterday there were 4 fish over 200 pounds in the mix, with the biggest a 225 going to Sam Olsen . This fish also won him a pair of Pirana plyers from Accurate. Nice going Sam.

So far this morning we are having a hard time getting bites hopefully they bit some time today.

Andy Cates

June 7th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday gave us a few chances at better size fish. The sharks are a pain but we managed 18 tuna for the day. Bob Cherry won the Accurate Boss reel with a 220 pound tuna and runner up was Robert Baker with a 207. All other fish were 80 to 185 pounds .

So far this morning just a couple of sharks but hopefully that will change.

June 6th, 2008

Good morning folks.

Our first day in the buffer zone showed promising sign just very few bites. After clearing the camp at noon we made our way out and saw good sign of porpoise and fish. We lost the first couple of fish ,one right at color and another one that appeared to be well over 200. The only two fish we were able to hook and catch was a 201 caught by George Woodely and another about 175 by Wallace Gilkey.

We will see how it goes today as we are heading out right now.

Andy Cates

June 5th, 2008

Good evening folks. Today brought us some of the better wahoo fishing you see these days. Very good action on the Catchy lures and wahoo bombs all afternoon . Not much sign of tuna so we are making our way into the Island to try our hand at the 6 mile buffer zone.

June 3rd, 2008

Good evening folks. Another day of travel that always seems to be the longest day. After a wahoo seminar we rigged up ,ate and watched movies and talked politics. What fun.

Tomorrow is going to be a great relief getting in the grounds can't come soon enough. We will be at the bank late morning and see if we can get some wahoo action.

The weather is fair, it looks like it might be breezy but only about 15 knots. About standard for out here .We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

June 2nd, 2008

Good evening folks. A nice day today with a little better weather and warmer conditions. We had a thorough day of rigging up and are ready for a wahoo seminar tomorrow.

We decided to start on the outside at the bank and see if the wahoo is available as the month before. Of course hopes of tuna as well. The weather outlook in the southern waters looks decent with a chance of getting nice later in the week.

We will report again tomorrow

June 1st, 2008

Good evening folks.

Well , we are finally on our way after 2 months of annual boat maintenance and happy for a change of pace. It's nice just to be off the freeway and in traffic even if we are only going at a speed of 11 knots.

The weather has been as expected, windy and cold for the first day of travel but soon to change as we venture south. Accurate reels is sponsoring the trip, our last long trip of the year. The June Heat trip usually starts with warmer weather but here we are. Tomorrow will be our first day of fishing seminars and rigging with better than 50 Accurate reels and Calstar rods to rig up .

And that will be just the start. With the personal gear from the group it looks to be a long day ending with super glue on all of our hands. As of now we are headed outside but our timing may start us off at Clarion depending on the speed we make tonight.

We will report again tomorrow

Red Rooster III – Fishing Trip

Date of Trip: Tuesday, March 11th, Thursday – Thursday, March 27th

On March 11, 2008, I set out for a fishing trip I had been looking forward for a very long time, and my expectations were met far beyond what I had hoped for, maybe except for the fact that I did not catch a 300 pound tuna

Looking back on the trip, there were three important life lessons that I observed throughout the trip and now plan to integrate into my life.

Effort

I have never seen a person put so much effort into hoping that we would hit “the big fish” action. Captain Andy Cates never lost sight of his goal to make sure that we had some decent fishing. Although the trip started out a little rocky, with unstable weather and water conditions, as well as a run-in with sharks, Captain Cates never once gave up on his mission. If possible, he really would give it his best 200% effort.

As part of the trip, we went from the Hurricane Bank to Clarion to San Benedicto, and lastly to Socorro. After several days of looking for a decent catch, on the last day we finally hit a school of big tuna. Captain Cates taught me never to lose hope because your efforts will eventually pay off.

The service provided by the deckhands – Fernando, Joe, Tom, and Nick - on the Red Rooster, was razor sharp. Theirs was the kind of service one might only expect to be provided at a five-star hotel. Again, the effort they put into their jobs to make everyone happy was noticeable. They scratched everyone’s backs.

Lastly, who would have thought you could get first-rate food on a fishing boat? The ship’s galley service, provided by Steve and Jose, was a perfect “10;” they nourished us day and night. I was amazed that Jose remembered that I liked my eggs over easy every time I ordered them. He also remembered how I liked my steak; that’s the kind of effort and service I like to see and will remember long after my trip.

Manner/Behavior

The second theme I gained from the trip is the importance of manners/behavior. Several awards were handed out for the size of fish that were caught on the trip, but I think the best award was the “manner” trophy. Whoever thought of this idea was very clever!

Although most of us took this trip for the “big fish” action, we also went to enjoy ourselves and to relax. Even still, sometimes we got caught up in the heat of the moment when we were in the middle of the “action” and forgot our manners. The manners trophy was an indirect way of making sure we remembered our manners – which we sometimes tend to forget in “the moment.” It was a great idea to make sure that all the fishermen on board were on their best behaviors, so that everyone enjoyed their fishing vacation.

Sharing

Mother always said to share with others and apparently there were others who got the same advice as children and listened to their mothers as well.  We had Bill sharing his home-grown and hand-picked avocados and “Big Tuna” Bill Ghiselin sharing his mouth watering homemade cookies. Roger shared his years of knowledge and expertise of fishing gear care- I learned so much from him. For most of us, this was the first time meeting, but this didn’t hinder folks from sharing their goods, whether food or knowledge.

In the end, this 16-day fishing trip was not just about the “big catch” but it was also about very important life lessons that everyone should try to apply to their ordinary lives. I learned not to give up, even though things may look grim. I learned that there is always hope. I learned that no matter what kind of situation you’re in, manners are still important. And most importantly, even if you don’t know someone very well, sharing what you have can lead to lifetime friendships.

I will always remember this fishing trip and the incredible people on board who taught me wonderful qualities that everyone should apply in their every-day lives.

Sincerely,

Jin Sung Chang

March 23rd, 2008

Good afternoon folks.

We are on our way to Cabo San Lucas to drop off the fly -home passengers.

After a tough battle with bad weather and scratch fishing , a little each place ended up with high points at various places .With the best wahoo fishing outside the guys got a sample of the fast pace action that the legendary wahoo can produce. Eating the trolling lures, Catchy Tackle Lures and the bait on the light finesse 27# wire leaders. With a taste of bigger tuna to go with that fish up to 200 pounds anchor style fishing.

The inner Islands brought a little here and a little there with a couple of stand out days bringing in some quality fish. Some days long and uneventful, other days with good action and trophies to go with. Top fish for the trip met the mark of 240 pounds with Joseph Cho with a 240, Seung Cha with a 225, Lee Bull with a 228, Ross wheeler with a 215, Ben Kita 221. Art Green 207 and 45 other tuna over 100 pounds up to 195. Not a lot for the entire trip but enough for everyone to have a chance at a big fish and some guys succeed. With 70 wahoo spread around our 15 anglers everyone got a chance to get a few of those as well before the weather came up. The weather the last 3 days has been great and really helped things out as far as moral and the overall trip.

I want to thank Accurate reels Catchy Tackle ,Five Star fish processing . Black Water and Seagar flourocarbon for there contributions and of course our main line sponsor IZORLINE for the great giveaways and trophies that will be handed out for Lunker award and sportsmans award. Rod and Reel radio will have more details about the trip as well and Bill will be on tonight and next Sunday.

Thanks again

Andy Cates

March 20th, 2008

Good evening folks.

I was hoping for a better report but it just isn't so. Yesterday was a complete loss with heavy winds and poor conditions. Sign of small fish but nearly impossible to work.

Today was not much better with less wind but still a pain. Choppy confused seas that seem to have everything down. Not good for the Buffer Zone at Clarion. We did manage to land 5 fish from 100 to 120 pounds and one lucky angler won a Five star fish processing certificate for the first fish over 100 pounds for the day.

The weather has been a huge factor for us. We are hoping it comes down tonight and we have at least good working conditions for tomorrow.

We will report then

Andy Cates

March17th, 2008

Good morning folks.

The weather came up and the wahoo fishing declined. Unfortunately not much on the anchor, for the most of the day we had 9 wahoo and only 3 tuna. We drove around late afternoon and picked up 7 more wahoo but saw no sign of tuna and caught only sharks in the afternoon and evening. Big fish for the day was a 215 caught by Ross Wheeler on the kite.

We are going to give it half a day and if it is still poor work our way inside and start looking for something to catch. This is not going to do it.

Andy Cates

March 15th, 2008

Good evening folks.

Our first day brought decent wahoo fishing and just a few tuna to go with them.

Good conditions and sign of tuna , the sharks look to be a big problem for us , at least today. We did not get in here until mid morning so maybe we missed a shot on tuna. We will find out tomorrow. With the amount of life today we are hoping the sharks back off and give us chance to fish. We ended the day with 5 tuna from 80 to 175 pounds and 40 wahoo. The wahoo definitely saved us but that won't last so we need the tuna to get on the bite.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

March 14th, 2008

Good evening folks.

Another day of travel today .

With that we did a wahoo seminar and got rigged up for tomorrow. We will be at the Bank in the morning and hoping for a nice greeting from some hungry wahoo and tuna. The bank has had a long rest and the prospect of a few bingo stops on wahoo look good. We will find out tomorrow. It does seem like the wahoo fishing has been holding up down here and with a long rest it could be good. More important is the tuna and only time will tell. .

We will report again tomorrow and have reports on our first day at the Bank Andy Cates

March 13th, 2008

Good evening folks.

Another day of travel and a seminar on fishing tuna. We decided to have daily Jack Pots on the trip and will be winning two Seeker rods and certificates from Five Star fish processing for catch of the day. We will spread it out so there is a J.P every other day. The weather is better today and starting to warm up. With one more day of travel the guys are getting excited in hopes of Wahoo and big tuna .

We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

March 12th, 2008

Good morning folks. We left yesterday on a 16 day fly home from Cabo long range fishing trip. Sponsored by Izorline and Rod and Reel radio. So far the weather is nice and the bait looks good. We are headed to the outside in hopes of some wahoo action after the long rest the Bank has had. With any luck the tuna will be on the bite and we can sit it out. If not other options are available like Clarion that offered our Jack pot fish last trip and explosive action offshore style in the Buffer Zone.

With any luck we will be able to use our Catchy Tackle lures to start the trip off on some wahoo action. Lets hope it works out.

Feb. 21st, 2008

Good morning folks. We finished off good yesterday with a great show on Black porpoise and some big fish to go with it. 15 tuna for the day. Three over 200, biggest fish caught by Mark Moffet a 281 that was retrieved in the skiff. Allen Babashof with a 234 and Rich Rose with another cow going 213. The dozen other fish were 150 to 193 pounds and an incredible show on the stops.

Very similar to the explosive action of the Mag bay fishery only it was out here at the Island. With the time spent out here It looks to me like there are good possibilities of big fish to come for trips coming up. It is a lot of work and you do have to be patient but the chances are there. We are on our way home and so far the weather is nice, lets hope it continues.

Andy Cates

Feb. 20th, 2008

Good morning folks. Not much to report for yesterday. The fish never really showed until late afternoon. They also were reluctant to bite. With only 4 bites for the day and ending up with 3 tuna I would say it was tough. We had visions of much better after the first day here.

Today is our last day and we are hoping it is good to finish up on. Biggest fish yesterday was a 195 caught by Gary Grimaud.

Andy Cates

Feb. 19th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday the offshore scene was looking up. Nice areas of black porpoise and fish to go with them. We got in there a little late and picked off a school that stuck with us for a little while. We ended up with 14 fish over 100 pounds including a 234 caught by John Loftus ,a 225 by John Aives and one right at 200 by Rich Rose. A couple others in the high hundreds up to 190 as well. With a start of 50 pounders and then turning into big fish, it was good action and today we are looking for more. The weather seems to be coming down all the time and looks good for today

Andy Cates

Feb. 18th, 2008

Good morning folk. We left the Bank yesterday afternoon with very little to show for. With only 8 wahoo and no tuna by 300 in the afternoon it was time to leave. It is all about timing out here and we were off by a few days. We are headed into the Island in hopes of offshore action . It won't take much to out do yesterday .

The weather has improved all night and now we have less than 10 knots and mild seas. We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Feb. 17th, 2008

Good morning folks

Yesterday the wind was up but not that bad. It was actually soothing after the first couple of days. slow here again with 7 tuna and 9 wahoo. We trolled around a little and were ready to go in and try the Island when we hooked a kite fish. It only amounted to a few fish but better than nothing. Nothing over 200 today 140 to 180 so hopefully today can get lucky and get a couple chances. On that note lets just hope this fish stars to bite.

Andy Cates

Feb. 16th, 2008

Good morning folks. Another tough day with a couple of short moves for 10 fish over 100 pounds including a 221 caught by John Stardivant and a 216 caught by Rich Rose. Both fish were on the chunk , fishing 135 pound and a Mustad circle hook. The other fish for the day were on sardine or Squid on the kite. For the most part we need something to change. This fish shows well it just won't bite. The conditions are plenty good they just need to settle back down.

Andy Cates

Feb. 15th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a long hot afternoon with very little on the better size fish. With a good show during the day it kept our hopes up but very few bites. Good conditions all day, they just were not biting. We finished with 11 tuna from 140 to 185 pounds, still no chances at 200 pounders but hopefully today. No wahoo today, so hopefully they move back in as well.

Andy Cates

Feb. 14th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday started with the wahoo action and gave guys a chance to loosen up a little. After one short anchor job we were up looking around again and picked up a 150 pound tuna on the troll. It looks like Gary Grimaud is a strong contender for the troll J.P. We got the anchor down about 330 when we finally saw some sign of tuna and picked until dark. 10 tuna and 16 wahoo for our first day.

We are hoping to stay anchored today and pick to gather up more tuna and hopefully scratch at this wahoo on the anchor. We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Feb. 12th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we spent rigging up and doing a seminar. Tuna fishing was the topic and all the techniques for the Bank. We are going to start outside and take it day by day. Arrival is tomorrow morning.

Those of you that are waiting to sign up for the March 16 day fly home from Cabo now is the time. With fisheries throughout the chain including recent visits to Socorro island with great relations with the camp and Navy. We may even find ourselves in there this trip.

With the anchor style fishing at the bank with chances of both wahoo and tuna, to the offshore fishing style off the islands inside the options are here and the fact of fishing your way into Cabo leaving Socorro or San Benedicto the last morning. That's the reality of prospects for this chain, now we just have to hope for fish that want to bite.

Look through the latest Melton International catalog for some of the terminal tackle we are using. The wahoo rigs have included wire size from 27# to 60 # for bait and 69 pound for the bombs and Catchy tackle jigs. We will report again tomorrow night after our first day at the Bank.

Feb. 10th, 2008

Good morning folks. We left yesterday with some of the best weather we have had in weeks. Lets just hope we can keep it around for a few days. After a nice load of bait we proceed south on the outside track to either the bank or the Island.

Reports sound decent with good weather to go with decent scratch fishing. Wahoo and tuna are on the menu and the prospects look good. Loftus and Martin are out with us and already some great raffles to get things started.

With more travel time ahead we will report tomorrow .

Andy Cates

We will be in there at about 1000 in the morning and checking with the camp. We will report again tomorrow.

Feb. 2nd, 2008

This trip we have seen some good fishing and some scratch fishing, we had flat cam sea's for the ride down to the fishing grounds and lots of wind while we where on the grounds and definitely unfavorable weather during our ride home. None of which we can control but just work at putting the best trip together possible with what we are given to work with, all in all we put together a very nice catch of fish and dealt with the weather the best we could. The wind and seas are still very much a factor in our ride up the coast, not as bad as last night but we are still bucking into 18-22 knots of wind and 6-8 foot seas. Our ETA to San Diego as of right now is looking like 1100 hours at the dock, that could change for the worse if this wind and sea condition picks up throughout the night. WE are all praying the does not happen, if the winds back off it's possible to make port 1015-1030 hours but it's very hard to predict at this point. WE will go with 1100 hours ETA and hope we get a little break over the next18 hours of traveling and get their a bit earlier. I will call H&M Landing early in the morning with our exact arrival time, you can call the landing (619) 222-1144 by 0730 for our arrival time, we are very much looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

One more tome I would like to thank Mustad and Son Hook Company for all the wonderful Mustad products they provided to all the guests on board this trip, we have some great Mustad success story's from this trip. Also thanks to Bluewater Tackle and San Diego Fly Shops for their very generous donation of all the raffle prizes that everyone on board benefited from, it truly add a special touch to the trip. Last but certainly not least I would like to thank Jack Nilsen and Accurate Fishing Products for the Accurate Twin Drag 50 reels that he had on board for everyone to use, it's always a pleasure to have such a fine product at our disposal while fishing the big Yellowfin.

John Grabowski and the Crew of the Red Rooster III

Feb. 2nd, 2008

Our weather has taken an even worst turn with 25-30 knots of wind all night long and step close together seas. Our forward progress has been slowed dramatically due to these very unfavorable sea conditions, at this time our ETA is very uncertain. PLEASE check back this evening around 5:00 PM and I will try to have an accurate ETA at that time, it will be directly related to what this weather does throughout the course of the day. PLEASE CHECK BACK.

Crew of the Red Rooter III

Feb. 1st, 2008

The wind has been blowing 20-25 knots our entire trip up the coast to this point, pretty uncomfortable ride home to this point. We stopped at Alijos Rocks for an hour and a half this morning just to let everyone get outside for a Little while, no sign of fish while we where there. Water conditions at Alijos where 63.0 water temperature very clean blue with northeast current, LOTS OF WIND. Our ETA into San Diego Sunday February 3, 2008 as of now is 9:00 AM but you should check the web site Saturday evening for any changes. The weather is forecasted for basically more of the same and we need to see what type speed we can make throughout the night and during the day tomorrow, we will send an update in tomorrow afternoon.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 30th, 2008

The weather picked up over the night and we had 20-22 knots of wind all day which made for very tough working conditions. We saw the same sign of fish today as we have been seeing but it was wild and hard to stay with, the weather was a big factor in our day's end total. We ended the day with nine fish once again from 170- 197 pounds, absolutely beautiful grade yellowfin tuna.

At dark we prepared the vessel for traveling, battened down the hatches and put her on course for home. We will report as we make our way home, for those of you who are going to meet the boat Sunday I will post an ETA Friday and an update on Saturday. Please stay tuned.

John Grabowski and the Crew of the Red Rooster III

We had good sign of heavy fish today from 1100 hours until dark, the fish are a little reluctant to bite but the grade is outstanding. We landed nine fish today 185 to 201 and had that many more opportunities that for one reason or another did not make it on the deck. We are staying put for our last day of fishing in this zone before we start heading north tomorrow after sun down, the prospects are excellent for a big finish if this fish bites even a little bit through out the day. We had a steady 15 to 18 knots of wind today that did play a factor in the loss of a few heavy fish right at color because of the boat rolling around and the line breaking or hooks pulling but that's part of the deal. Our wind seemed to back off considerably at sun down today and we are hoping for a little less wind tomorrow, this should give us a better shot at landing this beautiful grade fish with better sea conditions.

The weather was at it's worst yesterday around dinner time with winds of 25-30 knots accompanied by a very steep short confused sea, even on the anchor it was a very uncomfortable night. Around midnight the winds began to subside and started to come around from the Northwest to the normal northeasterly direction, by daylight the forecaster's prediction of 10 knots out of the northeast where a reality and a welcomed sight. Very good fishing conditions around the bank today with a steady northwesterly flow, we had very good life around the boat from midnight on with tons of 10-30 pound yellowfin and skipjack getting under the lights and being caught at will all night long ( plenty of chunks). Once again we had sensational wahoo fishing on the anchor for the better part of the morning using live sardines, bombs and jigs, they where even being a pain to deal with on the kite baits. Much to our surprise and disappointment we had very little sign of the better grade tuna around today. Ben Travis did however land a 160 pound kite fish just after daylight and that was it by noon on the bigger tune. At lunch we pulled the anchor and left the bank heading back to the original area where we started the trip in hopes of a few shots at that beautiful grade fish, we will report back with the results of our next move.

The weather forecast for more of the same good weather like we had yesterday was completely wrong, we experienced wind and rain all day today making for very poor fishing conditions. The tide was 180 degrees from what it has been and the fishing followed suit, very poor fishing all day long was the direct result of poor current and the adverse weather conditions. WE did however see sign of that bigger tuna we have been catching so our plan is to stay over night in this area hoping for another drastic change, this time in our favor. What a difference a day makes.

Today was very good fishing from daylight until 1400 hours and then it was over, our current died and so did the fishing. We had very good fishing under the kites and balloons using live flying fish and a 7691 Mustad hook, we missed very few fish today on the flying baits, we also had good fish on the chunk and live sardine. The majority of the fish are 110 to 130 pounds with the better fish being 185 to 195. Our big fish of the day was caught by Carol Thompson and is estimated at 207 pounds, that is the same Carol Thompson who did such a fine job yesterday on a fish we estimated at 195 pounds and the connection let go right at gaff. Mike Thompson landed a 190 just minutes before Carol boated her trophy Yellowfin, the Thompson's had a great morning. The wahoo fishing on the anchor was just outstanding, all application's seemed to be successful for those who targeted the wahoo but live bait and a wire leader was the most productive. The weather has become down right balmy with just 5 knots of breeze, a tropical sky and scattered rain, the forecast is for more of the same weather conditions tomorrow. We will report back tomorrow with a written picture of how our day went.

We had a little more wind today then the past couple of days, 15-18 knots and it made for tougher fishing conditions. The sign of tuna was good in the morning however it was pretty reluctant to bite, we had a very good show on the good grade fish up until 1400 hours when it all but it disappeared. Eleven tuna and thirty wahoo for the day, the Yellowfin ranged from 100 to 168 pounds.

Billy Casper Jr. caught the 168 using a Mustad 3/0 Hoodlum Ringed hook on a Super Seeker 6470 H rod and Avet two speed reel. The big heart break of the day was a fish right at two-hundred pounds that was one pull from gaff, the mono to fluorocarbon knot broke. The angler on that very tough fish was Carol Thompson who was using a 3/0 Mustad Hoodlum hook as well and the hook never failed, a 3/0 hook is rather small for this big gear but we have not had a problem so far and I'm sure it helped us get bit in this scratchy fishing condition today.

We are going to give this another day and hope this tuna starts to respond to what we are offering a little bit better, we will let you know how it works out tomorrow.

We started our trip out with pretty good tuna fishing yesterday on 35-50 pound tuna with a 130 and a 170 pounder being the big fish of the day. Weather was very nice and the sign of fish pretty good. Today the grade of fish improved, we landed 19 tuna 100 to 130 pounds and four other fish going 160,180,197 and a 200 pounds. Weather once again was very pleasant with 12-15 knots of wind and partly overcast skies, forecast for tomorrow is calling for more of the same. The first two days of fishing have went pretty good and we have a nice start to the trip, we are hoping to continue to scratch and put a little aboard every day. We will report back tomorrow night, wish us luck.

Good morning folks. Yesterday we ended up with 18 tuna and 18 wahoo. It was decent action between the two with a chance at a couple of big ones as well. Top fish for the day was a 201 in the afternoon on a fly lined sardine. Very few kite bites with the chunks being the big focus for the bigger fish.

So far this morning we have one bigger fish, a 216 and 4 other tuna. The wahoo have not woken up yet and we are eager to get another shot at them. Hopefully soon.

We will report again tomorrow

Jan. 14th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday was another tough day with only 3 tuna up to 130 pounds. The wahoo kept us alive with 17 for the day. This place has certainly done this before and will do it again. With very little sign of tuna throughout the day's far today It has been better, we even had a chance at a big cow but the connection slipped out. This afternoon we have 16 tuna and 18 wahoo.

Anchored up all day getting the wahoo mostly on sardine. Biggest fish so far is around 175 pounds and the overall grade is a bit smaller than the other day. Mostly 80 to 140 pound fish. Any improvement is good. With one more day we are hoping things break loose tomorrow.

Jan. 13th, 2008

Good afternoon folks. Yesterday things took a turn for the worse. A few fish in the morning up to 160 pounds and then 13 wahoo for the rest of the day. With our limited options we are stuck and today is even worse. 17 wahoo and just one 90 pound tuna so far. Things can change but right now its not looking good. If it is poor again tomorrow we will head back into Clarion for the last day.

Jan. 12th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we picked most of the day, just a slow one at a time pick with occasionally 3 on at once. They never seemed to really settle in. The chunk has taken some of the bigger fish and also the skip jack for bait. Sonny Jones was the top dog yesterday with a 298 on a skip jack. One of the biggest fish I have seen out at the Bank.

So there are chances on Super Cows out here you have to be very lucky. We picked off a couple other cows throughout the day and ended with 25 tuna and 3 wahoo. If we can continue to scratch like that the next 4 days we will end up alright, But doing it is a different story. Lots of time at the rail. So far this morning just 4 fish up to 160 pounds .

Jan. 11th, 2008

Good morning folks. Yesterday we sat on the anchor and fished. What a concept, I think they call it "old school" fishing. I would not say they were biting but we did catch 15 tuna and 6 wahoo.  Biggest fish was 216 on the balloon with squid. Conditions are uphill current and that makes things a little tough.

So far this morning 6 tuna and 1 wahoo, biggest fish 225. Same conditions here again current into the wind. Nice. We will report again tomorrow

Jan. 10th, 2008

Good morning folks. The phone has been down and reports were not able to get out. There really has not been much to report on this end. We started out on the beach, with the New moon we were hoping for good sign and responding fish, not the case 4 fish on the anchor, one nice fish around 230 pounds another at 150 and a couple of smaller grade. Before lunch we pulled the anchor and proceeded to drive around the rest of the day. Very little sign with no bite.

We left Clarion yesterday with even worse results. Although the Inspection at the camp went well the fishing did not. No sign off the island with the exception of a few single fish marks on Black porpoise. With the bird sign close to the island it looked as if all the fish were up tight to the beach. But who knows . I wouldn't write it off we had very good fish last year in the Buffer zone so maybe after this moon phase.

Out to the bank we go. We will be there this morning at 830 and hopeful after miles of leg work start our trip.

Jan. 6th, 2008

Good afternoon folks. We have had a great ride down with no rain or wind. We were surprised with that after the forecast when we left. The bait looks good and we will be fishing tomorrow with what looks to be good weather.

Hopefully the weather stays decent so we can get a good look tomorrow.

A seminar yesterday and raffle from Catchy Tackle and Pelagic Clothing was great, everyone enjoyed the bonus items from hats to Jackets. Thanks guys. We will report tomorrow on our first day of fishing.
