Hi folks!

We are still fishing at the Clarion Island Buffer Zone therefore the connection to the wi-fi is none too good. But we have beautiful gorgeous weather! Less than 5 knot winds! So far we have 210lbs yft caught by Bob Michener & another one at 150lbs. We are coming up on some nice size tuna, so fingers crossed that we can catch a few more cows! We are keeping an eye on the storm and moving northeast if we have to. We'll report again soon!

Captain Andy Cates

Oct. 27, 2013

Good evening folks

We had a fun day of running and gunning on bird schools in the buffer Zone. School size fish from 60 to 140 pounds we fished until sundown and headed east to stay out in front of the Hurricane . Looks like nice weather inside tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Oct. 26, 2013

Good evening folks.

We left the bank late afternoon . The weather was kicking up and we wanted to have a buffer if the storm turned up early. We didn't see the sign or catch the fish we caught yesterday. Mostly small fish with just a few decent size fish. We will be up at the Island tomorrow an keep moving up as needed . Tomorrow the weather looks ok and Monday it starts to kick up with south east winds. All is well working our way up to calm seas.

Oct. 25, 2013

Good evening folks. We finished up a slow day with a nice hit on better size fish before sundown. 50 tuna for the day but some smaller 50 to 70 pounders mixed in. A lot of moving around throughout the day but the evening the fish stuck for a little bit and we picked off a couple of fish over 200 and some nice fish in the high hundreds. Tomorrow we will try it again. The storm looks to be below us about 225 Miles if Italy's above up tomorrow we will move up as well. The current forecast looks good for us

Oct. 24, 2013

Good evening folks

We had a decent first day at the Bank. Not exactly classic Bank fishing but it is the first day . We made a few anchor jobs for just a few fish a time and then had a decent hit in the evening finishing the day with 29 tuna and a couple of wahoo . Tuna were nice hundred plus Chapman is going to Gaviotas with us

Oct. 23, 2013

Good afternoon.

So far a nice ride down with hot weather today. We did a nice Raffle today from Loftus and Martin and gave away some great items. An Okuma Makaira 30 was the start and it carried on with Rods and lures.

Tomorrow we will be at the Bank. We should get in there about 9:00 and give it the day. Hurricane Raymond is a big issue but has been down graded and will still be 700 miles away. It does show it coming our way so we will be on limited time basis unless something changes.

Oct. 21, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day of travel.

Did a seminar this morning and rigged up the boat for winter season. Bait looks great and the weather is nice.

We do have a system down below to keep an eye on. Hurricane is projected to downgrade and head out to Socorro. We will se what happens in the next few days. Cold water extends up to Alijos rocks so that is the obvious place to run or go. All of the hot water is in to the Northeast or east. We will keep a close eye on that but have business as usual until then.

Good evening folks.

We got on a school of good sized Bluefin this morning and drifted until we left for home. We hooked about 15 fish and landed 5. The challenge was exhausting and we didn't really have the gear for the big fish. We ended up with 5 bluefin. One fish about 75 pounds the other fish all over 100 pounds up to about 140.

What a finisher, we were looking for Jack Pots, but that was a little extreme.

We should be in tomorrow at 9:00

Sept. 7, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a great day at the Island today. From daylight until 5:30 when we left the fishing was great. We had a couple of slow period's during lunch but still able to pick. The afternoon and evening picked right back up and it was on. Nice fish here from 18 to 30 pounds. Most of the fish ranging from 22 to 28 pounds. Almost all drift fish with epic weather.

Sept. 6, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a great first day .

Starting off in the morning with wide open Kelp paddy grade Yellowfin and Bluefin. Small action fish from 10 to 20 pounds. Really get things worked out and get in on some wide open action.

We left that fish biting and worked down and got in on some explosive action on 25 to 45 pound Yellowfin. Three different stops with some incredible action.

Tomorrow we will be fishing Yellows at one of the Islands. Give the tuna thing a break and mix it up.

We will report again tomorrow

Good evening folks.

We had a couple of drifts on tuna today . We are happy to see that some Yellowfin tuna are moving in and we are catching a little mixed in with the Bluefin. The fish are still down and for what we saw today did not reflect on what we caught. We ended the day with 25 Bluefin and 6 yellowfin up to 60 pounds and 1 nice Yellowtail. Things look good for this weekend and the whole long range fleet are looking for another float.

We will be in tomorrow at 8:30 and leave on a 3 day trip at 1:00

Good evening folks

We started off this morning with a bang. 34 Yellowfin tuna off a kelp and hungry for more. Starvation after that. We spun and threw bait all day on different little spots and caught nothing. Ending the day with 34 Yellowfin and 2 dorado.

We will be in the bluefin zone tomorrow and it sounds very spotty. Maybe they will be up again tomorrow.

Good evening folks.

We ended the trip with a long slow drift on the 30 to 40 pound Bluefin. It was a nice treat to stop the boat for a while after what seemed like a long run up the line.

We took off at noon and headed for home . We should be in at 8:30 in the morning.

Aug. 23, 2013

Good evening folks,

We had a lot of sign of small Yellowfin tuna down around 350 miles south of San Diego. Unfortunately they were to small to keep mostly 6 to 8 pound fish. We did get a few 25 pounders mixed in but took a lot of releasing to get those. We had a couple of decent Dorado as well.

We were running out of time and travelled up the rest of the day and will be in the Bluefin grounds tomorrow.

It does sound spotty but hopefully we get lucky .

Andy Cates

Aug. 22, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a great day of fishing that started first thing in the morning and lasted until lunch. Great grade of Yellows 18 to 28 pound fish. Very steady fishing all morning.

We moved up the ridge and finished off in the evening with a slow pick and a few flurries. Tomorrow we are offshore looking for kelps in warm water . It will be interesting to see what we find.

Andy Cates

Aug. 21, 2013

Aug. 16, 2013

Good evening folks.

We started off good this morning with two stops on fish from 50 to 78 pounds . Quite a challenge for the first attempt at fish. The bluefin were a big challenge The afternoon was tough . Tried a few kelps for small yellowtail and released them. Not much to speak of.

Ending the day with 40 Bluefin and 1 yellowtail and a dorado.

We are headed up to the tuna grounds after topping off with mackeral. We had slower fishing today but managed to stay interested until this afternoon. Hopefully we make decent speed and get up there in time for the morning. A 228 mile move. Wow=

Andy Cates

July 10, 2013

Good evening folks

Everything worked out as planned today.

We had incredible sign of yellows this morning and finished off with a couple of drifts by 10:00. Same great grade and actually more visual and surface action than yesterday.

Our next plan was to get bait. Struggled at that for a while and then found the mother load. Perfect 6 to 10 inch greenie mackerel and loaded up.

Now we are headed offshore and will be in the grounds tomorrow with as much bait as we can hold and ready to go.

It looks like the weather will be flat for the next three days and we are looking forward to that.

Cedros is living up to it's name again with long drifts on quality yellows The visual of spots of yellows streaming across the bow and stern in classic flat calm conditions. Grade of fish is 18 to 30 pounds. It was game on We are trying for bait tonight and will fish for a few more yellows in the morning then head up to the bluefin grounds for three days.

July 8, 2013

Good evening folks.

It was a very long day of driving around with little sign of tuna. We salvaged the day with a sundowner that brought in 56 Bluefin tuna.

On a day like today 56 was a lot. It's all relative. Tough fishing and tough conditions with sometimes gusts of 20 miles an hour. We are headed south and will start at the Island in the morning. We will see how the morning goes and take it from there.

Andy Cates

July 7, 2013

Good evening folks .

We got to the party a little late today. We did manage a couple of decent drifts with fish up to around 60#s . We missed the best fishing in the morning so we are going to give it tomorrow and see how it goes. 57 Bluefin for the afternoon and looking forward for tomorrow

July 6, 2013

Good evening folks.

We are on another 8 day trip and headed down to start the trip in the BlueFin Tuna grounds.

This is the 14th annual Coach's Beefer trip. We have about 75 % of the same guy's as last year and it is great to see them healthy and back again.

We spent the afternoon getting rigged up and going over tackle.

Sardine's look "ok" but big. They will go fast.

We will be in the area tomorrow at 9:30 in the morning

Good evening folks.

Not much to report today. A lot of driving for really not any sign of tuna. There seems to be quite a bit of small yellows on kelps but that was about all. The weather was great and we had very good looking conditions. Just not much up today to look at.

We should be in tomorrow at about 730 in the morning.

See you then

June 26, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day today.

An early school of Bluefin sent us into a long drift for 75 fish. Some fish in that drift up to 50 pounds. A nice surprise for what reports from other boats had been saying. Another drift for twenty more Blue fin and a surprise stop on Big fish over 100 pounds. We stopped and hooked 4 fish and watched some big fish boil around . The fish took a couple hours to bring in on light line and we did manage to land a couple of Jack Pot fish.

It sure was exciting to see that size fish jumping around . Biggest fish landed was around 140 pounds.

Tomorrow we are going to move up and fish closer to home . The area today was over 200 miles away and to far to fish in the morning.

We will report again tomorrow

June 25, 2013

Good evening folks.

We had a fantastic day of Yellowtail fishing. Great action from daylight to about 300 in the afternoon. We had a re fill of yellow's and are now headed back up to Cedros to try for bait and get in position for offshore fishing. It looks like tomorrow will be windy and then Wednesday will be nice again. That should set us up for a nice finish of the trip . I hope!

Great weather coming up the line

June 23, 2013

This morning we had a couple of Yellows and decided it was time to head south. Conditions looked poor and what we did see wouldn't bite. Nice afternoon for sushi and a movie.
We will be on the Ridge first thing in the morning.
Hopefully we have a good report.

June 22, 2013

We are headed down and will try for bait tonight and start looking for yellowtail. After a couple of days offshore the guys are ready for something different. Overall today was good with 90 Bluefin for the day and a sundowner that lasted until after dark. Good times!

June 6, 2013

Good evening folks.

A nice day of travel today. Got the boat all cleaned up and all the gear stowed. So far the weather has been pretty good. About 15 knots of wind but quite comfortable. As of now ETA looks to be about 8:00 sunday morning.

We will report again

June 5, 2013

Good evening folks.

If only I had a report that the fishing turned for the better.

Nothing last night . Skip Jack and sharks. Needless to say at 400 in the morning everyone seemed to be more than happy to go home.

It was startling to see a place go from a lot of sign to absolute zero sign. And a real disappointment for all of us.

The travel has been nice so far. Lots of people catching up on sleep.

The weather is nice right now and hopefully it stays.

Andy Cates

June 4, 2013

Good evening folks.

The Bank has pretty much shut down on us. Very little sign today and just a handful of tuna and wahoo. Conditions straightened out this evening and we finally have current. We are spending the night in hopes of a last hit before we leave early in the morning.

Andy Cates

June 3, 2013

Good evening folks.

We spent the day basically watching fish jump around and not bite. We caught a handful of fish for our effort but needless to say a big let down.

We will see how it goes tonight. There sure was good sign today. Hopefully it shows up tonight.

We are anxious to have a good report tomorrow

Andy Cates

June 2, 2013

A nice day of wahoo fishing today. Flat calm weather and blue ski. Sounds nice.

Sharks took a toll but we managed 70 wahoo for the day. Just a handful of tuna, Bob Michner with the 215 and Laurens with the 220. Laurens walked away with the www.accurate.com Boss 600 narrow for his fish. Nice side pot prize .

Thanks again to Accurate for the daily Jackpots.

Tomorrow we will be back outside finishing our trip. I hope it holds up out there.

Andy Cates

June 1, 2013

Good afternoon folks.

We had a frustrating night last night. Starting off good after dinner and then the conditions died and the fish went away and the sharks came on. We made a couple of moves but never could get anything going.14 tuna for the night and a long night it was . Bob Michner Hooked and landed a 218 after the third anchor job right before daylight. That fish was a victory for him and he won a Boss extreme 600 narrow from www.accurate.com. and if you can believe this, he gave up the prize for the next angler that catches fish of the day.

Anyway we are headed in to spend the rest of the trip on the inside. More than anything just looking for a change of pace , the guys are whipped form the long nights and days. Lets hope it works out . So far coming along fine.

Andy Cates

May 31, 2013

Good evening folks.

Today started last night with a pick on nice fish from 120 to 200 pounds. Things lasted right up untill grey light when the current backed off and the sharks moved in.

The rest of the day has been slow with just a few tuna and a dozen wahoo.

Right now guys are having dinner and getting ready for what we hope is a repeat of last night.

It does look that the day time is getting slower each day so we will see how tonight goes and take it from there.

We put up pictures for the web and put up pictures on Face Book throughout the day.

Andy Cates

May 30, 2013

Good evening folks.

We ended our day with 20 tuna with a couple of fish over 200 pounds. We didn't get a morning hit, only a couple of fish but managed to scratch in the afternoon that helped out our day.

We are anchored up and hoping for a night bite especially with what the Excel did last night, hopefully we are the chosen ones tomorrow. Or at least get a nice morning start for a dozen or so.

Andy Cates

May 29, 2013

Good evening folks

We got here this morning and started at about 10:00. Our first anchor job picked up 8 tuna and then the sharks ran us out. We made a short move and continued to pick at decent fish until about 430. Then it went dead. 24 tuna and a couple of small wahoo for the galley was our day. Biggest fish 253 pounds caught by Bill Walsh.

Take a look at some of the photos and follow during the day on face book

Andy Cates

Good morning folks.

Just another hour and we will be at the Bank.

The weather is great this morning. 10 knots of breeze and overcast . The water temp has climbed up to 78.3 degrees and you can feel it in the air.

We will keep you posted on how the first move works out.

Andy Cates

May 28, 2013

Good morning folks.

We just got finished with the wahoo seminar. Most of it is safety but technique and gear also is a big part of rigging. With that over with the guy's can spend some time making leader's and rigging up jigs http://www.wahoobombs.com for Captain Jimmy's wahoo bombs.
We will be fishing tomorrow and starting the trip. Let's hope we like what we see at the bank!

Andy Cates

May 27, 2013

Good morning folks.

Got finished with the morning seminar and now starting to get rigged up. Lots of action at the tackle table. Definitely the hotspot on the way down. We are making good speed and right now we are headed out to the Bank. We will continue with this plan unless we slow way down. So far so good

May 26, 2013

Good morning folks.
Our first night out was a little rolly. Wind was out of the southwest  hitting us on the side. Fortunately there was not a lot of wind. Just annoying.
Today we will do a little pick up work and get the fishing gear ready on the boat.
We have a seminar that will include Jack Pot and processing options. Also introduce the Accurate and calstar combo's that Leo brought out for the guys to use. Accurate brings along about 40 rods and reels for the guys to use. We will start getting those outfits ready as well as the gear for the boat. www.accurate.com.
We will keep in touch

May 25, 2013

Good afternoon folks. We left today to finish off the year with June Heat. 15 days on a ride home. We got a great load of bait and so far have nice cruising down swell.

The boat is running great and just getting familiar with the Wi- Fi. So far so good. Really nice to get back on the water. The guy's from last year are back again to try there luck at the last trip of the year.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

May 19, 2013

So far things look good. We have most of the projects done and are looking forward to getting back out fishing.  We will be setting up the wi-fi this week and getting everything on line for June Heat. Here is a shot of the new antenna and some other upgraded items on the Red Rooster 3.

April 13, 2013

Coast Guard inspection went well and the hull and structure of the Red Rooster is sound. All the running gear looks excellent and now just a few touchup's.

Monday will begin the cosmetics, We have some galley work to finish the counter and carpet downstairs. As we get things in place I will shoot pictures and post for you to see.

Sunday April 21st we will be doing the Red Rooster 3 dunk tank at Day at the Docks . I believe this is the fifth year and we are looking to dunk again with prizes from our sponsors.

Have a nice weekend

Red Rooster 3 – 2/23/12

We’re on our way home and I just wanted to share some thoughts as the charter master. This was a challenging fishing trip which did not present abundant opportunities for big tuna for all anglers. That said we put in our full effort and walked away with more than enough total fish with an excellent overall grade and several that gave the lucky and or skilled anglers great bragging rights. Before reviewing the highlights let me acknowledge the great RR3 crew, without whose professionalism and expert guidance and coaching we all know would result in no fish at all. These big tuna are so mean and strong having experienced crew with great instinct, skills and top level expertise is critical to our success. Most tuna would escape our efforts to bring them to the gaff if we were required to fish for them with less skilled crews or crews without the intense and assertive culture to deliver the very best service 24/7. Thanks also to the chefs who worked so hard to keep us nourished and strong to tackle these beasts with great food 5 times a day.

Our trip started with a huge raffle so I want to again thank all of our sponsors. Captain Cates listed all of our sponsors early in the trip reports so I will not list each one again here, but all of us really appreciated all of the raffle items. Many tackle items from our generous sponsors were used on the trip to successfully subdue our target species, and the grand raffle generated $1,410, all of which will be distributed to 4 different non-profit youth fishing programs and some set aside to take wounded warriors on a fishing trip. Please take a look at the list of our sponsors and be sure to stop by their booths at the Fred Hall show and by their products.

A couple of worthy notes from some of the sponsors’ raffle items and demo items they sent along on our adventure. Avet provided a 3-speed 80 size reel to be used on the kite. It landed many big tuna effortlessly picking up the slack kite line with lightning speed in the 4:1 ratio setting and grinding in the fish when gearing down to the brutally strong 1:1 ratio. The beastly gears, huge handle and large diameter spool provided phenomenal torque and grinding power. Crew members and anglers were all blown away with it’s power.

Phoenix also provided a couple proto type rods along with a PHDX4H rail rod custom wrapped beautifully by Sato Custom Rods, all of which caught several large tuna. The custom Sato wrapped rod was won by Sun Choi who caught several personal bests on his new rod and eventually landed his first ever cow. The two proto-type rods made from a secret new material are feather light and exceptionally powerful. Several anglers enjoyed these new rods, one of which was deployed on the boat kite gear rotation. Curiosity got to the crew who also tested these new rods by pulling on them with all of their might and certainly beyond what any normal angler or fish can do. Everybody was impressed.

All trips have great stories and this one had several. The rookies really shined on our trip. First time long rangers were on fire hooking and landing more fish than average and more fish than several of us veterans. Darrell Pickford, Mark Atlas and Jay Watson had spectacular trips with multiple big fish, multiple personal bests and are the newest addicts to long range fishing. Joshua Gerson’s trip was nothing short of spectacular. Each of his first 6 fish were new personal bests. Before the trip he stated his bucket list goal was a 300# super cow, which I suggested may be totally unrealistic. Joshua nailed a 200+ pound tuna on day 3, a colossally great achievement for a first time trip. Then he fought and landed a monster fish which was taped by the captain at 298#s and we are all hoping it will be over 300#s when weighed at the dock. Josh was ill equipped for the trip and borrowed rods and reels from various friends including me. Josh caught his 200 pound fish on an Avet reel he borrowed from Bob Hara and a PhenixX4H rod from another friend. His 300# pound fish was caught on an Avet reel and rod provided by Matt Salas. This gear provided by friends and the boat was all Josh needed to record a trip of a lifetime. This story also proves anybody can go long range fishing and have a shot at these huge tuna.

Thanks again to everybody involved in making this a great trip; anglers, crew and sponsors. I hope to see and fish with you all again soon.

Larry Brown, Charter Master

2/20/2013

Good afternoon folks.

We have communication now that we are almost to Cabo.

We will be in Cabo in the morning to drop the guys off and head up the line.

It sounds like rough weather up above and I am expecting a bumpy ride for the guys on the way up.

Yesterday was our last day of fishing .

More of the same goes as far as the caliber of fishing. A scratch from daylight to dark with each fish hooked counting big time for a success full day. Another 15 tuna and 18 wahoo yesterday. Three nice size fish with a 300 plus pounder and a couple over 200.

Each day we scratched between 15 and 40 tuna , mostly decent size fish with the bulk of the fish from 90 to 140 pounds. Not a lot of kite action so the guys had to work at the sardine fishing in order to stay in the game throughout the day. The early morning showed production on the big baits but after daylight it was back to the sardine.

A nice trip with quality fish and nice weather.

We will keep you posted on ETA's for sunday as the weather will dictate when we get home.

Andy Cates

2/19/2013

We are on our way to Cabo, left the Island around 3:30PM.Yesterday, we had 18 tuna and 32 Wahoo. Today we had 15 tuna & 18 Wahoo. We had a few fish that taped out at 308lbs, 270lbs, 230lbs. That was a real bonus for today, though it was still somewhat slower than we would have liked. The Wahoo made things real fun and exciting both yesterday and today, overall we had a nice catch! I will email more once I have gotten into Cabo!

Captain Andy Cates

The weather has been great and looks to be nice tomorrow as well. We should be home at 630 in the morning on Super Bowl Sunday.

Jan. 15, 2013

Good morning folks. We are on our way home and still pounding through what seems like endless windy weather. Our move to the Bank certainly saved things with 2.5 days of scratch fishing on really nice fish. 120 to 190 pounders . The bite lasted all day and we had chances at fish over 200 pounds each day. The weather and conditions made for some of the most frustrating and tough fishing you could have. Current slowly going straight up into 20 to 35 knots of wind each day. The boat endlessly rolling making the end game battle at gaff even more challenging. For some it was great for others it seemed impossible. We did manage 100 nice fish out there to end the trip after 2.5 days. Tommy will post a few pictures of memorable fish but even getting a picture seemed difficult . The ride up has been more of the same with 20 to 30 knots and some surprise rolls and pitches.

All in all very challenging. The guys were up for it and put in a lot of effort for what was caught Needless to say we can't wait to get some better weather up the line.

Jan. 14, 2013

We are on our home now, we left hurricane last night.  The last 3 days made the trip. 25-40 fish a day, nice fish, anywhere from 100-190lbs fish. Couple fish over 200 lbs  a day! Horrible weather 35-30 knots every day, we still have rough weather coming up the line, but we salvaged the trip on the last 3 days at the Bank. The big  fish, of course started showing at the Island at Clarion after we left,  the guys were getting 2-4 big ones every day.  But the grade of fish we were able to catch at the Bank were all beautiful! Really nice fish, and everyone were able to catch some nice fish!  It made our trip all the worthwhile! Looks like the weather for the next few days will be pretty rough, but the last day the weather should be pretty nice!  Report more soon!"

Jan. 13, 2013

We are out at hurricane, very frustrating days at Clarion, we  came to the bank yesterday, 25 fish. 3 over 200 lbs. today 40-2 over 200 120-180lbs. We have tomorrow to fish before we head home.  We have to leave the bank tomorrow night to come home. We are out here with the Excel. Today we had a very nice day of fishing. It is a salvage job for sure, thank God this  worked out the way that it did ! "

Jan. 10, 2013

Tough day yesterday 10- tuna, a few Wahoo..... had a hard time finding anything that would get on it there and bite. Pretty tough fishing allot of moving around.

Bob Maine got the biggest 213lbs right before dark,....aside from that  there a couple here a couple there on anchor job....

We are sitting hopefully a good spot this morning we got a 273 lbs and a couple other 90lbs fish.  Hopefully this works out here today!

Definitely some nice fish around, just getting into the right spot! We will talk to you tomorrow

Jan. 9th, 2013

Captain Andy Cates phoned into the office, here is a small report:

Yesterday that caught 16 YFT, 25 Wahoo. Today,....we are busy, fishing! We will report again soon!

Jan. 8, 2013

Hi Anglers!

Windy 25 tuna 70-100 lbs just a couple of fish

Gary Grimaud caught a  170lbs, & Glenn Fromang caught a 230lbs right  before dark on the jig iron TL68, so that was exciting!

Allot of wind, yesterday we spent the day dragging  anchor, and we managed to get a hold of the anchor last night, so we are stuck here . We have not caught much so far, a couple of fish from 80-100lbs, however,  we are hopeful for a better day!

We will report again soon

Jan. 5, 2013

Good morning folks.

Still nice weather and heading down. We went by Alijos this morning and pointed it to the Bank. I should get a report tonight and decide where to start. The Royal Polaris will be there today and we will see how it goes.

Big seminar today with plenty of top shots and rigging. Everything looks good so far and anxious to get the fishing started.

We will report again tomorrow

Jan. 4, 2013

Good evening folks.

We are off on our Long trips again with a 15 day Loftus and Martin Charter. We had a nice load of bait today and left the point with classic San Diego weather. Flat calm all day with a nice warm sun. It got cold quick at night.

Anyway a day of travel and a seminar and some ready maintenance tomorrow. First night out after the Holiday's and feels a little weird on the boat. Tomorrow will be different though.

Good night,

Andy Cates
