Fishing Reports 2010

Looking At All The Spots

Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing from southern Baja December 20 after a ten-day trip with 25 anglers. They visited just about every high spot to scratch up a decent catch after the water cooled in the area.

“I’ve got to give credit to the skipper,” said Bob Ingles of Half Moon Bay Sportfishing and Tackle. He and his wife Sherry operate the Queen of Hearts. “He worked really hard and burned a lot of fuel to get us a catch.”

Among other spots, Cates listed San Carlos, Cedros Island, The Ridge and outside of Cabo San Lucas as places he visited.

Greg Brooks of Yucaipa won first place for a 180.3-pound tuna that bit a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 80-pound Izorline fluorocarbon, 60-pound Izorline and 80-pound Izorline Spectra, on a Penn 12 modified and two-speeded by Cal sheets, and a Calstar 7470 XH rod. “They were pretty spooky,” said Brooks, “so I had to drop down to get one. I paid for that when he fought me for an hour and 40 minutes.”

Mac Beare of Las Vegas won second place for a 170.9-pounder, and Kenneth Peil of Portland, OR won third place for a 124-pound yellowfin. Rounding out the lineup shot with a 120-pounder was Dick Langlois, who won the coveted jacket for his fourth-place fish.

Dec. 19, 2010

Good morning folks. We spent the day at Cedros and covered the area below there in the morning. The only place we saw any yellows was below the Island and caught 17 fish before it died. Maybe we would have done better if we were there earlier but who knows. They were small yellows 10 to 15 pounds. When we left that we never saw a yellow the rest of the day . All the way to the North end of the Island for nothing.

We are dragging this on and trying for Vermillion this morning. With good weather we might as well.

We will be in before 7:00 tomorrow morning .

See you then

Andy Cates

Dec. 15, 2010

Good evening folks. We had better results today. With a pick on 40 to 80 pound fish. Finishing the day with 37 tuna. We are going to try here again tomorrow and hope that we start off earlier and have more tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Dec. 14, 2010

Good evening folks. Not exactly what we were hoping for but better than nothing. 75 small tuna for the day on porpoise. Weather was nice and the action was in the afternoon. Really no sign of decent fish. When I mean small 12 to 20 pound fish. We did get a few 30 pounders but not enough to curve the scale. Better than nothing.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Dec. 13, 2010

Good evening folks Our first day showed sign but not very good conditions, We had 16 tuna from 60 to 150 pounds. We are making another move south in hopes of better water conditions. It does look like we have a couple of places to fall back on. We are going to check one more area before we settle in somewhere.

We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Dec. 12, 2010

Good evening folks. Not much to report today. Nice weather though. The bait looks like its coming around after a percentage of die-off. It looks like we ill be all right though. Tomorrow we will be fishing and report in the evening.

Scrappy In The Dark

Bob Michener of Oxnard caught his 39th cow on an Accurate reel aboard Red Rooster III while fishing with skipper Andy Cates in the Buffer Zone. Anglers call Bob “Scrappy” from his former career as owner of a scrap metals business, but the term would apply just as well to a guy who’s battled that many tuna over 200 pounds. It’s easy to imagine how many tuna he went through that were smaller to arrive at that number. If it weren’t enough of an achievement, Bob got his 282-pounder on a salami mackerel pinned on an old rusty hook. “I don’t know what kind it is,” Michener told dock reporter Bill Roecker at H&M Landing December 10. “I got it from the wife of a buddy who passed away, and I welded the ring on myself. “I tied it on because the sharks were around, but I got three fish with it and never was bothered by the sharks. I hooked the fish on the grind. He bumped it and it freespooled and he ate it then and spooled me. “We put the backup rod on, and when I saw the spectra getting down to the bottom of the spool I was afraid it would dig in and I started yelling to throw the rod in. It went in and I got into the skiff just before sunset. The rest of the fight was in the dark. We got to the buoy and the line was slack, so I reeled up and it came tight. He towed us around in circles for a half hour, and then I fought him at the side of the skiff for another half-hour.  He was the strongest fish I ever fought.”

Scrappy won first place for his tuna. He said he tied the rusty hook on 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor spectra. He used an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Sung Chung of Monroe, NJ won second place for a lanky 267-pounder. It also bit a salami, on a Mustad 10/0 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod to bring the tuna to gaff in 45 minutes.

Federal fire fighter Mark Moffat won third place for a 254-pounder. He also had a 202-pound tuna. He fished mackerel on Mustad 10/0 7691 hooks, on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 ATD reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. “I loved that reel,” he commented. “It’s a remarkable reel. I pulled the big one up in a spiral.”

Larry Watkins of West Covina won the coveted jacket for the fourth-place fish, a 192-pounder. He stood in with the winners for a lineup shot.

Susan Murray of Oregon City, OR was on her first long range trip. She had a great catch and posed with her prettiest tuna. “It was outstanding from start to finish,” she said. “I would absolutely do it again. Everyone was gracious and helpful to me.”

The Rooster was headed out again that same day to make her last trip before the holidays.

Good Evening folks The ride up the line has been horrible. We have had nothing but wind and swell since we left the cape. Nov. 20, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a little bit of fishing time this morning. Things were not the same and only managed 10 tuna before we left. A couple of 180 pounders and biggest fish about 190 to finish the trip. With only two days of fishing it certainly salvaged the trip with a very nice grade of tuna. Wishing for another day but very happy with the opportunities we had. The weather was great and good times for all.

Thanks to Jack , Leo , Gary and Gary for the help with all of the Accurate gear.

We will be in Cabo at 8:00 in the morning .

Good Evening Folks

Today we fished the Ridge and scratched and clawed or way to make out a day on yellowtail. The grade was sixteen to twenty two pounds with a few better ones. Keep your fingers crossed. Wish us luck.

Rooster Bangs Bank, Big C

Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing October 31 after a two-week trip to Hurricane Bank and the Buffer Zone off Clarion Island. His 24 anglers aboard the Loftus-Martin charter had all the husky tuna they could handle.

“It was really good on stock grade tuna of 120 to 160 pounds,” remarked Cates to dock reporter Bill Roecker on Halloween morning. “Fishing was good at both areas. At Clarion we found ‘em on bird schools. When we were at the bank we didn’t move much because most of the sign was along the East Side. We released about 70 tuna and we added about 55 wahoo to our catch.”

“It was a great trip,” added co-chartermaster Larry Martin. “I got 14 tuna!”

The best tuna was a 210-pounder caught by long-time Rooster rider Wayne Honda of Oceanside. It had been a few years since Wayne stood at the head of the jackpot lineup, and he was glad to be there again.

“This one took out a lot of Spectra,” he said. “He got about three-quarters of my backing. He stayed outside for about a half-hour, then he went down. When I got him up to gaff after an hour and a half we were at the starboard stern corner.”

Wayne said he baited a greenback mackerel that came aboard at the San Diego bait receivers. He used a 6/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on his Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar 7460 XH rod.

Graham McKenzie of Auckland, New Zealand subbed for his pal and trip regular Rob Tapert on McKenzie’s first long range trip, and first visit to the US. He won second place for a 191-pounder.

“I liked it so much I’m coming back again next year,” he stated. Asked how long his fish fought, he said, “It seemed like 50 years, but it was just a bit more than three-quarters of a hour, I think. He ran me up and down the sides, took me around the boat three times, and they had to hold him off with a stick (the fork). At the end he came up in the port corner.”

McKenzie got his winner on a sardine. So did third-place winner Joe Terra of Watsonville. The three posed for a lineup shot, and Honda posed with his chartermasters. The coveted Red Rooster III trolling jacket was won by Bob Cherry of Santa Monica, who got a 131-pound tuna on a black and purple Marauder.

Oct. 27, 2010

Good morning folks.

We never did manage any trophies yesterday. The grade was nice though 120 to 170. Very nice fish to finish up on. The overall grade was very good and we ended with a fantastic load of fish. The weather is perfect right now and looks to stay for the ride home. That would be different.

Andy Cates

Oct. 26, 2010

Good evening folks, We had a little sign of bigger fish today. We landed one fish around 220 and another right at 200. Also a couple other around 190.There was less of that 100 to 16o pound fish around so we weren't burdened with releasing and were able to hook a few bigger fish. Unfortunately it appeared we had a couple of bigger fish eaten by sharks as well. Amazing the sharks are off the Island but they are.

We are going to spend our last day of fishing here and hope we can get the remainder of our Jack Pots.

Andy Cates

Oct. 25, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a nice day here today and spent most of the day releasing fish from 100 to 150 pounds. We never saw or hooked any bigger fish and where a little disappointed with that. We are going to give it one more day and hope we see some sign of bigger fish tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Oct. 23, 2010

GOOD EVENING FOLKS. We had another nice day. All the same grade of fish. Mostly 110 to 130 pounds with fish mixed in up to 160 pounds. Really a nice grade. 41 fish for the day. We are headed in to see if we can get a few Jack Pot fish fist stop being the Buffer zone at Clarion and then possibly the Mag Bay area.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Oct. 22, 2010

Good evening folks. We had another nice day today with just a small sign of better fish. One big one we had on for a while and a few more fish in the 150 to 170 range. Unfortunately the big one fell off. But with really only one chance you have to be pretty lucky.  51 tuna for the day and we will be here again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

P.S. Hi Mom!

Oct. 21, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a bang up day here today with fish from 80 to 150 pounds. the bulk of the fish were 110 to 140 pounds. The only outstanding fish was a 180 flylined with sardine. The kite wasn't all that hot with no bites on the squid, only sardine. The weather is great and really very little sharks. We will try it again tomorrow. We ended the day with 73 tuna.

Hope it goes good again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Oct. 19, 2010

Good Morning folks. After our first day of travel we are now getting the tuna gear rigged up. We have had some nice raffles that including rods and reels and plenty of fishing tackle. We have all day today and all day tomorrow. Today focusing on tuna and tomorrow on wahoo. It looks like we will be at the Bank before daylight on Thursday.

Weather is nice and starting to warm up.

Big Skins On Ridge

After getting their tuna at Alijos Rocks, Red Rooster III anglers had a crack at the 23 Spot and the 13, when skipper Andy Cates took the 10-day H&H Outdoor charter in east.

I hooked one that looked like the biggest wahoo of my life,” said chartermaster Richard Hightower to dock reporter Bill Roecker at the H&M Landing scales October 16, “but he stayed out, and kept his side to me like a big dorado.  He might have weighed 80 or 90 pounds, and I got him to 15 yards of the boat when the hook pulled. Dang! I had him on a long time for a ‘hoo, maybe 15 or 20 minutes.”

Other anglers said plenty of the big skins were lost during the four hours they made trolling stops on the 23. Nearly 40 were landed, however, and a 66-pounder won the coveted trolling jacket for Sacramento angler Kip Young, a regular on the trip.

“We had mixed fishing at The Rocks,” said skipper Cates. “It was slow on the kite sometimes, and it was good sometimes. When we got to The Ridge we had a few bingo stops. We got lots of yellowtail on the 13 and a few trophies at Cedros Island.

Ted Crane of Huntington Beach got a couple of the wahoo. “Me and my buddy Mike were on a trolling team,” he said, as he loaded his yellowtail to take home. “We wondered who’d get hooked up, and both of us did, at the very next stop! Boy, I sure love these yellowtail to eat.”

Rick Wonders of Coronado won first place for an 84-pound yellowfin tuna he got with a sardine on a 4/0 Hayabusa hook and 50-pound Seaguar, two of the items handed out by chartermaster Hightower.  He said he used 50-pound Izorline and 50-pound Izor Spectra on an Avet HXW reel and a Super Seeker 6470 H rod.

“He came up in about 15 minutes,” said Wonders, “on the port side, aft.”

Bob Michener of Oxnard, who’s caught about 40 tuna over 200 pounds, won second for an 82.6-pound tuna.

“It’s the biggest one I ever got on 40-pound line,” he remarked.

Darryl Bruchez of Manhattan Beach won third place, for a 77-pound Alijos Rocks yellowfin tuna.

Red Rooster III is scheduled to depart tomorrow on a 14-day trip to the Hurricane Bank, returning on Halloween.

Good evening folks. We had a better day here today. We had 63 tuna with good kite action and sardine flyline action. 40 and 50 pound was the line size of choice. Kite was of course heavier. Squid bit last night and those came in handy on the Kite. We are hoping we can do the same here again tomorrow. The weather is getting better but still needs some improvement.

Good evening folks. We got in here at lunch time only to fid that the place was not biting . We had fish boiling around but we could only hook one at a time. We had 11 tuna for the afternoon and only fair sign of fish. The big afternoon push didn't really happen. We are going to give it another day and hope it was a down day. We are here now we might as well try it again tomorrow.

Oct. 7, 2010

Good afternoon folks. So far a great day of travel. Sunny and very little wind. We are starting our fall trips and left yesterday on our Newell Hyabusa Seagar trip. What a great giveaway we had and plenty of set-ups for the trip.

We are headed to the Rocks for the start of the trip and hoping to bring down this great weather with us. Looks like about lunch time tomorrow so it will be a long morning.

We will report tomorrow night on our first day.

Good Forkie Fishing

Joe D’Acquisto brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing October 6 after a four-day yellowtail trip to the San Benitos Islands. There were 26 fishermen aboard the Angler’s Center trip, and they ha very good fishing. The best of it, said anglers, was early one morning, when some were still sleeping.

Harvey Johnson of Arlington, TX won first place for a 42.9-pound mossback he fooled with a sardine on a dropper loop with a ten-ounce weight. He said he used 80-pound Izorline on an Avet 30 W reel and a Calstar 6460 XH rod.

Victor Castro of Imperial Beach won second place for a 31.9-pounder, and Garet Emmerson of Ventura got a 29.9-pounder to win third place. The coveted trolling jacket went to the fourth-place winner, Dave Dudley of El Cajon, for a 29.3-pound Benitos yellowtail.

Good Afternoon Folks

Today we fished for rock cod and had a good day. Then we went in to San Jeronimo Island and tried a couple of drifts for halibut. We had no luck on the flat fish. We had a great group of guys and on behalf of myself and the crew we would like to say thanks. Also a big thanks to Angler Center and Sunny Jones on the great giveaways and all the prizes at the raffle. We had a good trip on yellowtail. We will be at the dock between eight and eight thirty and then leaving on our ten day newell.

Yellowtail Trip Works Out

A five-day trip aboard the Red Rooster III offered yellowtail fishing for larger models to 24 anglers our with Andy Cates, who docked the boat at H&M Landing October 1.

Paul Cashman of Santa Barbara won first place for a 49.6-pound mossback. He said he got it with a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad hook on 40-pound Seeaguar fluorocarbon, 40-pound Izorline and 65-pound Power Pro Sperctra on an Avet LX reel and a seeker Black Steel 660H rod.

Sid Harris of Lakeside posed with his second-place 35.7-pound yellowtail. He bagged that one with a sardine and 30-pound line.  Travis Balew of el Cajon won third place for a 34.9-pound Cedros Island yellowtail.

Sept. 30, 2010

We picked at the Yellows at San Martin area. Hooking one to three fish at a time followed by some down time and then another short furry.  We did find one ball of yellows to bite heavy and that was a hectic few minutes. On the way back home now and should be in @ 6:30 AM.

Sept. 29, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a bummer of a day here today. The whole place rolled over with red tide. We spent time looking in other areas for very little. Where we saw fish yesterday we saw nothing today. It really made for a long frustrating day. We are running up the beach hoping conditions are good at San Martin. If ever we could use it tomorrow. We will report again tomorrow

Sept. 28, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a decent day today. Conditions were a little off but we still managed to scratch out a nice day. Our afternoon was spent trying for premium size yellows. We picked off a little better than a dozen of them looking like fish up to 40 pounds. The morning was more action but smaller fish. 15 to 18 pounders. Yo-Yo jigging produced well with the Fried Egg or Blue/White the hot colors. Tonight we are hoping for a shot on sea bass or good size yellow. We have a tank of squid and are ready to go.

Sept. 27, 2010

Good morning folks.
We left on another 5 day trip. This will bring us back to Cedros this afternoon in hopes of a sundowner on yellows. The sign of squid from the last trip has perked the interest in a chance at White sea bass. Hopefully we get a shot at those exotics. We wont be at the Island until the afternoon. The weather is like it is at home. Very Nice.

Family Outing

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing September 26 after the Pennell Group’s five-day adventure to Cedros Island with 25 anglers. The Pennell family did very well on their trip.

Dennis Pennell of San Diego used a mackerel baited on a 3/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook to bag a 45.5-pound yellowtail. He said he fished with 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon on 40-pound P-Line and 65-pound Power Pro Spectra. He used and Avet LX reel and a Seeker 6470 rod.

Paul Martinez of Las Vegas, NV won second place for a 39.5-pounder, and Rob Pennell of San Diego (cousin to Dennis) took third place for his 38-poundyellowtail. Since there were no troll fish, John Daniel won the coveted trolling jacket for the next-best fish, a 35.5-pound yellow.

Sept. 23, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a great day of yellowtail fishing at Cedros. Mostly drift fishing but spent time at both Cedros and Natividad. No Seabass last night and we are trying a different area tonight . The yellows we caught here had a lot of squid in them so we figured we would try where there was squid. We will find out tonight . We will report again tomorrow

Five To The 13

Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing September 20 after a five-day Izorline trip that went all the way to the top of The Ridge. There were 27 anglers aboard, including chartermaster Norm Fujimoto, an Izorline pro-staffer from Fullerton.

“The wahoo were there, waiting,” said Cates. “But we weren’t ready. We lost about 50 jigs to get our six wahoo.”

They also got a good catch of yellowtail and some yellowfin tuna, but the tuna, while thick, didn’t want to bite eagerly. There were two dorado on the 13, as well, and one of those got a spot in the jackpot.

“I got bit off when we slowed down,” said chartermaster Fujimoto, “so I went and grabbed a jig outfit and got bit right away, by a fish I saw about 30 feet from the boat.

“It was a Tady 9 chrome iron on 50-pound clear Izorline tied to 60-pound Izor Spectra,” he said, “on an Accurate BX-2 600 reel and a Calstar 800 XH rod wrapped by Taka Tanaka. The fish fought about ten minutes.”

Good evening folks.

Andy Cates

Sept. 18, 2010

Good evening folks.

Today was kind of a bust. The weather really mad e it tough to see offshore. We started way down in the 74 degree water thinking it would be the best chance for tuna. The move was hindered by the weather and the distance had us scrambling up the beach. We got a couple of dorado and a few yellows in our attempt to get up the line. The weather outlook doesn't look that good and we are heading up close to the beach in hopes of a better ride.

I will give an updated ETA tomorrow

Andy Cates

Sept. 17, 2010

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day of variety fishing . Unfortunately the tuna didn't want to bite but we caught plenty of yellowtail . 6 wahoo 15 nice size dorado and 3 grouper . Only 25 tuna which was frustrating but the yellows took up the slack on that .

Tomorrow we are going offshore and looking for porpoise to see if we can get some tuna . There was a lot of 74 degree water up above here and we did see a lively area on the way down.

Hopefully we can put together a nice day tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Sept.16, 2010

Good evening folks.

Poor start here today with no current at the Island which meant very few yellows for us. We decided to make the long haul and took off at 400 and are heading to the ridge. we will be there tomorrow at about 900 in the morning. Lets hope it works out the trip is counting on it .

We will report again tomorrow

Charkbait Nite Bite

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing September 15 after a four-day Charkbait trip with chartermaster Jeff Lambert and 27 other anglers.  Jeff said they got ¾ limits of nicer yellowtail with some schoolies mixed in.

One of the better yellows came to Rodney Carlton of Stonyford/Lodaga, who used a rental outfit with a Salas 6X Jr. jig in scrambled eggs color to bag his 31-pounder.

Dennis Rinehart of Napa won first place for a 37.3-pound yellowtail. Dick Volbeda of Upland was only a tenth behind him with a 37.2-pounder, and “Cigar Bob” Eudaly of Apple valley won third place for a 35-pound yellowtail

“We fished at Cedros/Benitos,” said Cates, “and it was best for big yellowtail and white seabass in the dark, on the dropper loop. There was lots of squid around, and the weather was nice.”

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day of yellowtail fishing today. Fish up to 40 pounds and a couple of Seabass to go with them. The morning was the best and some long drifts brought us into a slow evening with a lot of moving around . None the less we managed a nice day and happy for that.

We are going to be offshore tomorrow looking for tuna. If the weather is good enough.

Good evening folks.

We had a tough day offshore today with plenty of fish seen and not the right schools that would settle in for us. With the overall look of things we are hoping to string together a couple of drifts tomorrow. The weather came up today and was a bit of a shock after the flat calm that it has been but still plenty workable. A mix of bluefin albacore and yellowfin but only 15 fish for the day. Hopefully we can make up for it tomorrow.

Benitos Seals Are Gone

Sea lions gave his group of 22 anglers no problems at the San Benitos Islands, said Red Rooster III skipper Joe D’Acquisto at H&M Landing September 7.

“We fished there for a day and a half on our four-day trip,” said Joe, “and we got our limits of yellowtail in clean 68.5-degree water.” He added that offshore fishing along the way produced two yellowfin and a dorado.

Ken Klopfer of Thousand Oaks won first place for a 43.2-pound yellowtail. He also got a 33-pounder, he said. The big one came on a sardine and a 2/0 Mustad hook on 40-pound fluorocarbon and 40-pound mono. He used a Daiwa Saltist reel and a six and a half-foot Ugly Stick rod.

“He’s my best yellowtail ever,” said Ken. “He came up along with a big wad of kelp.”

Robert Yakemonis of Mira Loma won second place for a 33.8-pound yellowtail, and Alan Walbridge of Ventura, fishing with his two grandsons, got third place for a 33.4-pound yellowtail

West Coast Anglers Get Mossbacks

State Farm agent Bob Peterson chartermastered the five-day trip aboard Red Rooster III that arrived at H&M Landing August 19. Andy Cates skippered the trip, which was also sponsored by Lakeside Bait & Tackle, Five Star Fish Processing, VMC, Hobie and FishingVideos.com. There were 31 anglers aboard, and they all caught big yellowtail at Cedros Island.

“They bit good,” said Cates. “We made some nice greenback mackerel and they liked those as well as the sardines. On the way home we went outside and looked for tuna, and picked up three school yellowfin. One of them won the coveted trolling jacket.”

The jacket winner was rookie Robert Hernandez of Carson City, NV.

“I came across your videos on YouTube,” said Robert to dock reporter Bill Roecker. “I bought a couple of them and then I bought a ticket on the boat.”

“Did the trip meet your expectations?” asked Roecker.

“More than that! Look at the size of these fish,” exclaimed Hernandez.

Kevin Smith of Pt. Loma won first place for a 40-pound yellowtail. The homeguard bit his sardine, he said, on a 4/0 Hayabusa circle hook, 30-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, 40-pound Izorline and 60-pound Izorline Spectra. He said he used an Avet SJX reel and a Loomis seven-foot rod.

“It was a very soft bite,” noted Smith, after a medium-length soak. I could hardly feel him take the bait. The he fought good for about 15 minutes, and he took me around the boat twice.”

Smith noted that many of the bigger ‘tails came early in the morning, before dawn, on dropper loop rigs with mackerel. His came on the flyline, however.

Jerry Lahr of San Diego won second place for a 39.5-pound yellowtail, and Dan O’Leary of San Diego got third place for a 38.6-pound ‘tail.

Aug. 18, 2010

Good afternoon folks. We spent the morning offshore with really nice weather but not much fish. We got on one school of yellowfin tuna, hooked 5 and got three. 22 pound fish. Another kelp for 3 keeper dorado and 1 yellowtail. That was it. Nice water just not much fish.

We will be in early tomorrow and leaving early in case we have to make a long run. Hopefully we can get Joe and the Red Rooster out on time we are scheduled to leave at 10 in the morning.

We will see you then

Aug. 17, 2010

Good afternoon folks.

We had another super morning on big yellows. The action started at 4:30 in the morning and at 8:00 we had what we needed. 30 to 40 pound yellows. Green back mackerel was the bait of choice and also the surface iron. We left at 8:30 and went offshore for not much. We looked at some new water and that was about it. Tomorrow we are going to try are hand at offshore again. Maybe in the old area or further to the west.

We had a great day here today starting off in the dark this morning. We had our best fishing in the morning and then picked throughout the day with a little hit in the evening. Great weather and fishing.

Newell Open Returns

Richard Hightower’s five-day trip aboard the Red Rooster III, sponsored by Newell, Seaguar, Catchy Tackle, Yo-Zuri and his other products returned August 14 to H&M Landing. Andy Cates skippered the trip, which focused on island yellowtail. The catch was good and many of the ‘tails were large fish.

Steve Kim of Torrance won first place for a 39.9-pound yellowtail that took a sardine on a 4/0 Hayabusa hook. Steve made a dropper loop with his 50-pound blue Izorline and used a Penn 4/0 Yellowtail Special reel and a Calstar 50 Special rod.

Bob “Scrappy” Michener of Oxnard won second place for a 39.2-pound yellowtail. Richard Halack of Thousand Oaks got third place for a 38.9-pounder, and Hightower, of La Mirada, won the coveted trolling jacket for the fourth-place yellowtail, a 37.9-pounder, since there were no troll fish caught.

“I got mine with a Sea Strike 33 in scrambled eggs,” said Hightower. “On a Newell 533 with a 5.5 gear ratio.”

Richard is well-known in the southland and an angler an a long-time factory representative. Hightower’s H&H Outdoor Marketing in La Mirada will be the new distributor for Bill Roecker’s company Oceanic Productions and FishingVideos.com.

Good afternoon folks. We had bumpy weather last night but made it up to the beach for better weather and some drifts on cod. The water had turned over and the fishing was slower than it had been. Still good enough for the guys to take a few fish home.

We are leaving on a 5 day trip tomorrow and ready for another nice trip

Andy Cates

Aug. 12, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a nice day here today starting with early morning good grade yellows and finishing the trip off with a hit on 30 to 45 pound yellows. We had good action mid morning on 15 to 18 pound fish as well. The conditions have turned for the better and we were fortunate to get in on the change. Tomorrow We will probably be fishing up on the beach.

Cedros Yellows

Aug. 11, 2010

Good evening folks. Yesterday afternoon we made it to the Island just in time to get a shot on yellows. A couple of drifts gave us a start with 56 fish and then it was dark. This morning we woke up and scratched yellows in the dark and one white seabass, Throughout the day we picked at decent size fish from 15 to 28 pounds and kept busy all the way untill dark. Tomorrow we are going to focus on Trophy size yellows and see if we can get the Jack pot settled .

We have had bad phone signal and that is why the delayed reports . All is well and at Cedros tomorrow.

Good morning folks. We are starting out our Newell - Hyabusa 5 day trip. Richard Hightower and friends are out with a great giveaway that all enjoyed last night. We are in the process of travelling to the Islands for afternoon fishing. it will be a long day but hopefully we get into some fishing this afternoon.

Andy Cates

Andy Cates skippered Red Rooster III on a five-day trip to Cedros that retuned to H&M Landing August 9.

Steve Cook of Winchester won first place for a 47-pound yellowtail, his personal best. He said it bit a sardine on the dropper loop, held down with a 10-ounce sinker. He fished with 40-pound Big Game line on an Avet JX reel and a Calstar 700 H rod. He snaked that big forkie up in the dark, in just three minutes.

Hank Beckman of Ontario won second place for a 41.3-pound yellowtail, and jack Fisher of Corona took third for a 36.6-pounder. The coveted trolling jacket was won by Cam Taylor for a 35.8-pound albacore.

Good evening folks. We had another nice day of yellowtail fishing. Everyone slowed down in the evening and we decided to head up, With the lack of offshore action we are going to try the "cod " thing tomorrow and some drifts for halibut. Sounds like good weather up above so tonight should be nice We will report again tomorrow.

Aug. 6, 2010

Good evening folks We had a nice day of fishing today with all around better grade of yellow than we have had. We had to move around a lot but the hard work got us a couple hundred yellows with fish up to 40 pounds. We are going to be here again tomorrow and looking for another good day.

Aug. 5, 2010

Good evening folks.

Our first day of a five day proved to be poor. More of the same with good sign of fish and very few bites. Hopefully at the end of the trip things turn for the better. In the mean time we are headed to Cedros in hopes of action on yellows and maybe a few exotics.

Best Longfin So Far

Red Rooster III returned to H&M Landing under Joe D’Acquisto’s hand August 4, following the five-day Bluefin Jim trip with 29 anglers. They had an excellent catch of mixed fish.

“We started to get fish about 11AM,” said Joe on the dock, “and the best of it was that first day around one. We had one stop for 67 tuna. They were mostly 25 to 35-pound albacore. We also had eight bluefin and two yellowfin.

“On Sunday we scratched for 61 fish all day. Monday we went to Cedros and the sea lions annihilated us; it seemed like we were getting two for 12. We ended up with about two-thirds limits on yellows, though.”

Ken Briscoe of Carson city, NV won first place for the season’s biggest albacore so far, a 45-pounder. He told Bill Roecker he got it with a sardine on a 2/0 Flyliner hook tied to 40-poundSeaguar fluorocarbon and 80-pound Izor Spectra. He fished with an Avet LX reel and a Calstar 670 rod.

Joe Kottke of Santa Ana won second place for a 39.8-pound albie, and Roger Abercrombie of Yorba Linda won third place for a 38.8-pound albie. Kris Tjon of Irvine got the coveted trolling jacket for a 38.7-pound yellowfin tuna. He said it came on a green jethead.

Aug. 3, 2010

Good Afternoon Folks

Today we fished offshore. We saw lots of fish but couldn't get them to bite. We saw enough fish that if they want to get with it you'd be doing really good. The weather is ok not as bad as we thought. We are thankful for that. We'd also like to thank Bluefin Jim and all his sponsored, Big Hammer, Owner Hooks, Izorline, Lead Masters, Shimano, SeBile Lures, and last but not least Cutting Edge. We had a great group of guys and hope to see them again next year. Also thanks to Danny Fields for the great shirts.  We will be at the dock at eight thirty and will be leaving on another five day will report back later.

Good Evening Folks

Today we had a good day of yellowtail. The yellows where twelve to eighteen pounds with an occasional better one. We are on our way offshore for our last day. Wish us luck hopefully tomorrow is a bite day cause there is a lot of fish around there just not biting. The weather is ok but is suppose to get windy tonight.

Aug. 1, 2010

Good Evening Folks. Today was a hard day of fishing. We saw plenty of fish just didn't want to bite. There are some nice schools around so when they want to bite it will be game on. The albacore are all beautiful grade Twenty five pounds plus. There are bluefin and yellowfin mixed as well. We will be going to Cedros tomorrow in hopes at a chance at some yellowtail. Wish us luck for tomorrow. Will report back later.

Good Evening Folks. Today we had an excellent day in the offshore grounds. We had Albacore, Bluefin and Yellowfin. The fish range from twenty five to fifty pounds. The albies are mostly thirty pounds or also know as "Fatsos". I have no idea where they came from but thank god there here. What a day. We will be spending the night in hopes of the same tomorrow. Wish us luck.

Not something I usually look forward to doing but surprisingly it was enjoyable. Nice size Reds and a few Lingcod for the guys to take home. The weather inside was much better and we are having a nice evening. Slow speed going up it locks like 9:00 at the dock.

Good morning folks. Yesterday went better than the day before and we had one stop where they went wide open for a brief time. Enough time to get two go-around's but with all the mayhem only 23 fish were landed . No more schools for us after that. It looked like we might get on a roll and then back to 1 to 3 at a time . A tough day but everyone had chances and it left us with 48 albacore for the day. Long dry spells did not help and short stops made for a slow process.

Hopefully we do better tomorrow on our next trip.

Andy Cates

July 25, 2010

Good morning folks. Yesterday was very slow only 13 albacore for the day and that was in the morning. We ran up on a report and it sounded good yesterday. So far this morning not so good. Hopefully they pop up here today.

Good evening folks. We just left on a three day trip and it looks like we have our work cut out for us. Hopefully things turn around in the next couple of days. The weather is fine but it is building a little, still good working weather though. Wish us luck we need it.

July 20, 2010

Good Evening Folks We fished a day and a half trip today. It was a tough fishing for the entire fleet as a whole. We managed to scratch a little in the morning and then not until the evening. On a good note the weather is great nice and flat no wind but the fishing was not. We will be at the dock at eight thirty and back out tomorrow night for another day and a half. I hope something changes for the next one.

Kita Cranks ‘Tails, Too

Red Rooster III came home to H&M Landing July 18 after a six-day trip with 31 anglers and skipper Andy Cates at the wheel. Cates said it was the Ben Kita Invitational, and sure enough, Kita won the jackpot for a 40-pound yellowtail.

“We got limits of yellowtail,” said Cates, “and had some good albacore fishing. The water’s off color everywhere except on the outside. There’s big schools of bluefin out there but they don’t bite.”

Ben Kita of LA (one of three men to catch four 300-pound tuna) won first place for that 40-pound, sardine-caught yellow. He said he used a 3/0 Mutu on 40-pound Izorline, a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 655 XH rod.

Lance Yamanaka of Pasadena won second place for a 36.2-pound albacore, and Joe Camacho of Culver City pushed him with a 36.1-pound yellowtail, for third place.

ETA is for 7:30 AM Sunday!

July 17, 2010

Good afternoon folks. We finished with a bang with a good day of albacore fishing. It was certainly what we needed after yesterdays run out to the west for not much. Good action until we had to leave. The fishing seems to get a little better each day and most of the boats today picked off a school or two. As we have 1.5 day trips coming up the prospect looks good as long as the weather holds. Scratch fishing but a couple of good stops mixed in make for good days to be had.

We will be in tomorrow between 7:30 and 8:00 depending on the speed we make.

Andy Cates

July 16, 2010

Good evening folks. Yesterday we had another great day of yellowtail fishing. At lunch time we switched gears and looked for some bigger yellows in which we got. Not a lot but enough to keep everyone interested.

Today was a different story. We started way out west on a temperature break and found areas of Bluefin that would not bite, No Albacore to go with them and that made for a long day. We covered a lot of good country and got that out of the way. We ended up back where we were the other night and had one stop before dark. We are hoping for better luck tomorrow.

July 14, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a fun day of yellowtail fish. Only a couple of fish in the 30 pound class and the rest 15 to 20 pounds. Good action all day with great weather. What a great place to be. We are going to fish yellows again tomorrow and then weather permitting head offshore for the end of the trip.  We will report again tomorrow

July 13, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a pretty slow day here today. The savior was late when we had a stop for 29 albacore. Aside from that it was a lot of driving and occasional short stop. The last stop saved the day and brought us up to 63 albacore 3 bluefin and a handful of yellows on kelps. We are heading in to fish yellows for a couple of days and then weather permitting finish the trip offshore. Hopefully it goes as planned

We will report again tomorrow

Lunker Tuna, First Skinny Of The Season

Andy Cates docked the Red Rooster III at H&M Landing after the Jorge Nicifore Memorial/Coach’s Beefer eight-day trip with 28 anglers. The trip was a big success, with plenty of yellowtail to go around and numerous other species in the catch, including the best yellowfin so far this year and the season’s first wahoo.

The big tuna weighed 146.5 pounds. It was caught at Alijos Rocks by Mark Escalle of Huntington Beach, and won first place. He said he bagged his beauty with a sardine on a 3/0 gorilla hook tied to 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 50-pound Ande line with 65-pound Power Pro Spectra backing on a Talica 12 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

Joe Hellerman of Hermosa beach won second place for a 122-pound yellowfin. Mike Watts of Lancaster got a 109-pound tuna for third place. Mike Shelton of Florence, AZ produced the new season’s first wahoo, a 37.9-pounder that chomped on a red and black Marauder at The 23 Spot. He stood in with the winners for a lineup shot.

July 8, 2010

Good afternoon folks. We had another good day of action with another 90 fish for the day. The ratio of 30 to 60 pounders was better today and the bonus was 6 fish over 100 pounds. It should be a great Jack Pot contest at the dock. We are heading up now and travelling tomorrow and hoping to get into position for albacore and Bluefin on Saturday. The weather is good and we really hope it holds.

July 7. 2010

Good evening folks. We ended up having a decent day here. 90 tuna for the day but definitely a mix of fish. 40 of that fish is small18 pounders and the other 50 is decent 25 to 60 pounds with a couple outstanding fish around 100 pounds. Hopefully we scratch good again here tomorrow . It would be nice to get a couple more bigger fish for the Jack Pot. The weather was great today and the action was from dawn to about 400 in the afternoon.

Wish us luck tomorrow

Andy Cates

Good morning folks. Yesterday was pretty tough for us. Only 17 tuna and quite a bit of releasing on yellowtail. The evening completely died and we did nothing. So far this morning we have done better. With around 20 fish half decent grade the others small. Hopefully we can scratch here today and possibly settle our Jack Pots.

July 5, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a really good day of yellowtail fishing today. Nice fish 18 to 30 pounds. Really a good show with surface Iron action that will be hard to beat. Of course now we have bad weather and heading to the Rocks . We just can't seem to stay out of this weather.

We will report again tomorrow

July 4, 2010

Good morning folks. We left yesterday on our last 8 day trip of the spring. After this we fall into the summer trips that are 1.5 to 6 day trips until October. With the good weather we were tempted to stop short but decided to start at the bottom and work up. So today is basically a travel day and if we keep up this good speed we are making should be fishing late morning , tomorrow.

Rooster Comes Up Roses

Joe D’Acquisto skippered his first eight-day trip aboard Red Rooster III to success, arriving at H&M Landing July 3 with 20 nearly limited out anglers and a catch of yellowfin, bluefin, albacore and yellowtail.

Joe said he took his group fishing for two days offshore, three days at Alijos Rocks and a day at Cedros Island.

Chris Cossins of Calgary, Alberta won first place for his 118.3-pound yellowfin tuna. He said he caught it with a sardine on a 9/0 Mustad hook under the kite, on the boat’s kite rig: 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Izor Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 XH rod. The battle lasted 45 minutes, said Cossins.

Robert Yoon of Northridge won second place for a 113.8-pound tuna. Eric Lund of Rancho Santa Margarita got third place for a 94.4-pound Alijos yellowfin tuna.

Good Afternoon Folks

We finished our trip at Geronimo island and had a few yellowtail and some short halibut and are on our way home. The weather is up so we used the island to break down our gear and have lunch before we got back in the weather. The weather is up but is suppose to be down the next day and come down to grease after that .We had a great trip and would like to thank ballyhoo, pelagic, five star, Sunny Jones and Mike McVey for a great trip and great give aways. On be half of the crew and myself we'd like to say thanks. Wish us luck on our weather.

Good Evening Folks

Today we fished Cedros Island and we had good fishing. We would of had an excellent day if the sea lions didn't eat half of what we hooked. The bummer about the sea lions is that they didn't eat the whole fish just the belly's and then came back for another one. It made the day tough. The fish where fifteen to eighteen pounds with some up to thirty five pounds. The weather is up so we are going to finish at San Martin or San Geronimo. It depends how bad it is tonight. Wish us well on fishing and weather.

Joe and RR3 Crew

June 30, 2010

Good Afternoon Folks, The rocks where slow today we had thirty seven tuna and seventeen yellowtail. It was still the same grade. I'm sure if we stayed we could have scratched out some more but the weather is get worse and is suppose to get worse so we opted to get altitude why the weather is some what decent. We will be at Cedros Island tomorrow in hopes of good action on yellowtail. It would be nice to have good action on yellows to round out a great trip. Wish us luck. We will report tomorrow.

June 29, 2010

Good Evening Folks, Today was a good day at the rocks. We really had to work at it to get what we caught. All are happy with the day and are hopping for more of the same action. We had the same size tuna and yellowtail today and released a lot of small ones. We are going to spend the rest of our trip at the Rocks and hope for more of this beautiful grade. We hope they will bite a little bit better tomorrow. Wish us luck and pray that we have some current that is the biggest problem we have there has been very little current and it makes it tough to get a bite. Wish us luck.

Good Evening folks, Today we fished Alijos Rocks and had a good day. We had Yellowfin from thirty to sixty pounds with some better. We also had good yellowtail fishing the yellows where fifteen to eighteen pounds with and handful over thirty pounds. The weather is good. There is just enough wind to get the kites. We will be here for tomorrow in hopes to have more chances at more trophies. Wish us luck.

Good Afternoon Folks. Today we fished the morning in the albacore area for forty mixed fish. Most we're albacore and a couple yellowfin. The albacore are any where from twelve to twenty five pounds. We have left the albacore area and are heading down to Alijos to try for some trophies. We are off to a great start and wish to continue the pattern at the rocks. Wish us luck for tomorrow.

Good Evening folks We got down to the albacore grounds at 3:00 in the afternoon and ended up with an excellent day of fishing. We are going to stay the night and try again tomorrow. We are hopping for some more of the same results in the morning as we had this afternoon so we can head down to the rocks. This is the best albacore bite I have seen in a while. We'll just say they we're eating the hundred pound on the corner. Wish us luck for more of the same action tomorrow.

Kind of a tough day here today. Fighting with the weather and dragging anchor made for a frustrating day. We got anchored up around noon and picked 25 tuna and 20 yellowtail and then it died. We made a couple of moves and caught a few more fish but nothing that noteworthy. Hopefully we can stay in one spot tomorrow and pick . Sounds like the wind might be coming down tomorrow.

We will report then

Good evening folks. Tomorrow we will start fishing  It looks like about 1100 in the morning. We have been bucking this uphill current all the way down which is making for poor speed. The weather is cold and windy but fine going with it.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Good morning folks. We left on our first of three 8 day trips coming up for the spring season. This fist one, sponsored by Salty dog custom fishing rods. We had a great giveaway yesterday with all kinds of stuff from terminal tackle to custom rods. A great way to get started .

We are travelling today and will be fishing tomorrow morning.

Red Rooster III Accurate “June Heat”

5/29/10-6/13/10

by Leo Reihsen

On May 29th the Red Rooster III set sail on her annual 15 day “June Heat” Accurate Fishing Products trip with Captain Andy Cates at the helm. The trip started out drift fishing in the “buffer zone” at Clarion Island. We were soon rewarded with fair action on medium grade 60# to 100# Yellow Fin Tuna. After four days of decent fishing on YFT we set sail for Hurricane Bank in hopes of finding some biting Wahoo. We weren’t disappointed as most people got close to Mexican limits of the “Skinnies” before we headed back to the Clarion, hopefully for action on a better grade of Yellow Fin.

We arrived mid-morning on the 6th day of fishing and set out on a drift in a bird school. We were immediately rewarded with non-stop action on the kite and fly-lined sardine with 150# to 300 plus pound YFT. Many of the fishermen were using some of the $75,000 worth of Accurate loner reels and Cal Star and Seeker rods and were very appreciative to experience the use of premium equipment.

The action on YF Cow style fishing continued for two days until there was no room left in the fish holds. The last day we released anything that was under 200#’s. With the fish holds full and many tired Fishermen Andy pointed the bow to the North and we headed for San Diego.

During the trip Accurate provided tee shirts for all and daily jackpots of various prizes including three beautiful Accurate Boss Reels. Lucky reel winners were Thad Peach, Joe Arimitsu and Allen Jackson. In addition “Wild” Bill Walsh will have his choice of any Accurate Reel up to an Atd 50-wide for catching the largest 300# YFT on an Accurate ATD 80 kite rig.

The final count was 180 Yellow Fin Tuna and 140 Wahoo. The catch included 3 tuna over 300#’s and 39 tuna over 200#’S.  Jackpot winners were:

1st place Thad Peach   305.5# YFT

2nd place “Wild” Bill Walsh 302.1# YFT

3rd place Sam Olson  298.5# YFT

Once again the Red Rooster III Accurate “June Heat”trip turned out to be a trip of a lifetime for most on board. A special thanks to the Red Rooster crew (Joe, Tommy, Fernando, Nick and Ricky, the fabulous cook Rick and helper Stan and of course Captain Andy Cates for another outstanding performance.

Accurate Fishing Products and the Red Rooster III will be offering the same trip next year May 28th thru June 12th. In addition we sponsor a Fall trip 12/9 days with a fly back option from Cabo San Lucas, Nov. 12th thru Nov 24th. For booking information contact the Red Rooster III office at (619) 224-3857 or go to their website (www.redrooster3.com). Hope to see you next year on the Red Rooster III. Thanks for checking in.

Big Sunday: Overview

Andy Cates brought the Red Rooster III in from the final big tuna trip of 2009-2010 (the Accurate "June Heat" expedition) with a totally unexpected load of cows, including three supercows. His reports were so played down he may have earned himself a new moniker, "Sandbagger." It took a couple of hours just to weigh the cows.

Big Bang End

The 2009-2010 big tuna season came to a close when Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates slammed the door shut June 13 at H&M Landing. After an incredible 15-day Accurate June Heat trip with 23 anglers, Cates weighed in 42 yellowfin tuna over 200 pounds. Three of the fish were over 300 pounds. One other fish that taped well over 200 pounds was reported to gave been cut up for food during the trip.

Ken Barton of Sylmar had the biggest tuna, at 318 pounds.

"We had a battle of inertia," remarked Ken, "a half-turn on the reel at a time."

After some time, Ken passed the fish off, making it ineligible for the jackpot. He got it with a double sardine rig under the kite (kite fish were eligible), on 5/0 Super Mutu hooks on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a Penn 70 VS reel and a Calstar 6460 XXXH rod. The battle went an hour and 15 minutes.

Thad Peach of Stanley, NC won first place for a 305-pounder, a toad he decked in just a half-hour after it took a sardine on a 7/0- ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon. He said he used 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. He also had tuna of 2656 and 239.5 pounds.

Bill Walsh of Chino Hills won second place for his 302-pound tuna, and also won a new Accurate 50 H reel for the first 300-pounder of the trip caught on an Accurate. Walsh said he fished a sardine on a new Mustad 4X-rated perfect Circle 9/0 hook, tied to 130-poundSuffix and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with an Accurate 80 reel and a Calstar 760 XXH rod, and also got tuna of 241, 223 and 219 pounds.

"The big one made two good runs and then went up to the bow and stayed there," said Bill. "In an hour and a half, that’s where he came up."

Sam Olson of Frederickson, TX won third place for a 298-pound yellowfin. He also got tuna of 250 and 202 pounds.

Brian Hayes of Palmdale got close to supercow status with a 296-pound tuna. He also got tuna of 279, 253, 251, 241 and 220 pounds, not bad for a guy on his first trip.

"I told him not to expect that again on his next trip," said skipper Cates.

Hayes baited sardines on ringed Super Mutu hooks. He fished with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Joe Arimitsu of Simi Valley had three nice ones that weighed 266, 262 and 250.6 pounds.

Bud Mauerhan of Paradise bagged a dandy brace of yellowfin that weighed 263 and 258 pounds.

Robert Baker of Ft. Worth TX got one at 288.8 and one at 226 pounds. He fished double Trouble sardines on the kite on 10/0 Perfect Circle Mustad hooks tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

His brother Jesse Baker of Culver City got a 275-pound fish in 45 minutes. He also got a 245.6 and a 225-pounder, on sardines and 6/0 Fuji hooks. He said he used 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Richard Goka of Pinedale bagged a 271.5-pound yellowfin tuna.

Leo Reihsen of Graeagle found a 252-pounder with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Mutu hook. He tied it to 130-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline, backed with 130-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar TSS rod. The fight went an hour and 20 minutes, said Leo.

Mike Butler of Sonoma took an hour to bag a 250-pound tuna, and then took one at 245 pounds. He fished a mackerel on a 10/0 Super Mutu ringed hook, tied to 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXH rod.

Scotty Pomeroy of Montclair bagged a 240-pound tuna on a sardine and a 6/0 Gamakatsu hook. He said he used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 50 W reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

Bob Michener of Oxnard took tuna of 227, 225 and 203 pounds.

"That gives me 42 cows on the Red Rooster," said Bob, and one, my first one, on the Qualifier."

Bob said he baited double sardines under the kite on the new Mustad Perfect Circle hooks in 8/0 size. He used pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Izorline Spectra, an Accurate 80 W reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXH rod.

Al Jackson of Buena Park took a 232 in a half-hour, and a 216-pounder. He got ‘em with mackerel on a Mustad Perfect Circle 9/0 hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on as Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod.

Paul Oster of Mammoth Lakes took a 220-pound tuna.

Bob Cherry of Santa Monica had tuna of 214 and 210 pounds.

Bob Rubalcaba of San Diego caught a 213-pounder on a sardine and an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook. He fished with 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet reel modified by Ken’s Custom Reels and a Calstar 760 XXH rod. The fight went 45 minutes, he said.

ETA  @ 8:30 AM Sunday

June 12, 2010

Good morning folks. After a long ride home we are now in the final stretch. The weather has been ok just a little annoying after 3 days. It looks like we will be in tomorrow morning at 830. We will be looking forward to seeing everyone.

Andy Cates

June 10, 2010

Good morning folks. We had a nice ride last night and so far today it's not to bad. Actually it's pretty nice out. We got things cleaned up this morning and ready to go. We will be in on Sunday and have some big fish to weigh up at the scale. Should be an exciting time for some of the anglers.  Weather outlook is fair with a great 72 hour forecast. We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

June 8, 2010

Good evening folks. We had another good day today with some big fish to show for our efforts. With the end of the trip now the focus is on the weather up above. We have had flat calm weather the entire trip and worried we will pay for it on the way home.

We will see.

Andy Cates

June 7, 2010

Good evening folks. Yesterday we ran out to the Bank and it paid off well. We had great wahoo fishing until the afternoon and then took off. Today was really a great day with good fishing on big fish and great weather. Winding down the trip we are hoping for another day like today tomorrow.

We will report then

Andy Cates

June 5, 2010

Good evening folks. We did have a great day today and hopefully things are on a turn for the better. The weather is great and looks to hold for a little longer. We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

June 4, 2010

Good evening folks. A little better today with a few chances on nicer fish. Two fish on the kite brought in a 228 and a 218. Most of the other fish caught were from 80 to 100 pounds. We had a couple of other chances on bigger fish and things didn't work out, but happy to have the chance and hoping for more tomorrow.

We did have a winner on an Accurate reel. Thad Peach took the Boss reel with a 150 pounder. The kite fish don't count in the Accurate Jack Pot. Any way we will report tomorrow and hoping for another good day.

Andy Cates

June 3, 2010

Good evening folks. Another tough day with only 15 tuna for the day. Only thing was they were a little better size. 80 to 120 pounds with a 140 and a 180 mixed in. So maybe tomorrow. The weather is great and we are enjoying that . These are long days with this slow fishing.

Andy Cates

June 2, 2010

Good evening folks. We started off a little on the down side today. 25 tuna from 50 to 90 pounds. Not too bad on the sharks but really not all that great all around. Although we have had worse, that's for sure. The weather is great and we are hoping for some bigger fish tomorrow.

Andy Cates

May 31, 2010

Good evening folks. Great weather today. A great way to travel. Tomorrow is our last day of travel with a wahoo seminar. Lets hope there are some around. not much to report See you tomorrow

Andy Cates

May 30, 2010

Good afternoon folks.

We made a couple of stops and caught a handful of albacore. We caught enough for dinner tomorrow night and continued on down. The potential of the area looked pretty good. We never used any bait so it was hard to gauge what could have been. None the less sign of Longfin. Another long Range boat in the area had stops as well and will hopefully end up with a nice day. We are anxious to see how he ends up. The weather is nice and we are still looking for hopefully more sign of fish as we head down.

Andy Cates

Good morning folks.

We left yesterday on our last long trip of the year. Accurate sponsored June Heat down to the Hurricane Bank. The bait looks great . Good size sardines, excellent for hook baits, should pull heavy string just fine. After a couple months of maintenance the boat is running fine . Lets hope it stays that way with no surprises. Today is a quick seminar and raffle. We have a couple of gift certificates from 5 Star fish processing and some Accurate gear to get ready and give out. The weather is nice, still cold but not much wind.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Construction’s Done, Let The Fishing Commence!

The three San Diego landings have had their construction work completed, and the last one, Fisherman’s landing, has moved into the new building. Bill Hankins Construction did a fine job, noted Fisherman’s Landing manager Paul Morris, and finished ahead of schedule.

H&M Landing is done, the office folks are moved in and the place is ready to fish. Even the ice shack is looking good. There’s been some decent if sporadic yellowtail fishing lately and rockfish are biting, but the main bass bite has yet to begin.

The H&M lobby, tackle store and offices are also spacious and airy. The overall effect of all the construction at the San Diego Landings is wonderful, thanks to Bill Hankins. The buildings are clean and new and seem friendlier, larger and more accommodating. It’s been said there may be more parking in the lot and even more on the way, if a new area across the street gets approval.

Back-To-Back Cows

The Catchy Tackle-Pelagic 15-day trip aboard Red Rooster III returned January 21 with 19 anglers and skipper Andy Cates at the helm. The boat visited the Hurricane Bank, Clarion Island’s Buffer Zone and the southern banks off Baja, and found near-limits of tuna, with a good catch of wahoo as well. There were five cows aboard and two chartermasters for the two sponsoring companies: Fred Knilans and Sonny Jones.

Dylan Malmberg of Encinitas caught two cows on two casts, he said, and weighed them in at 249 and 229 pounds at the H&M Landing scales. The big one won first place. Dylan said it took a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook.

“He got tail-wrapped and he almost spooled me,” said Dylan. “I sat on my rod with my feet off the deck. He fought me for two hours.”

Malmberg said he used 130-pound Momoi Diamond leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 7455 XXH rod.

Catchy Tackle rep Fred Knilans won second place for a 237-pound yellowfin he got with a sardine on a ringed 5/0 Super Mutu hook. Fred said he used 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Momoi Diamond line with 130-pound Izorline Spectra on n Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 760 M rod.

“He was a hard fighter,” said Fred. “I thought about my wife and kids the whole time.”

Bill Branstetter of Mission Viejo got a 235-pounder with a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on a Tiagra 30 reel and a Baja Boomer Jr. rod.

A shout went up from Bob “Scrappy” Michener of Oxnard when his 210-pounder was weighed.

“It’s my 40th cow,” said Bob. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this! He’s long and skinny, and he pulled hard. I got 36 of the 40 on Accurate reels.”

Bob said his tuna ate a sardine on a 12/0 Mustad circle hook tied to 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 100-pound Izorline mono and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 XH rod.

Jan. 20, 2010

Good afternoon folks. Well, it looks like our timing is excellent with the weather. We have had a very nice ride home and right now we are experiencing a huge north west ground swell and all the wind coming out of the south east. This is putting the wind at our stern an actually pushing us up the line. We are making great speed and should be safe in the bay sometime tonight. Our ETA for tomorrow is 8:00 AM but we will be in the bay around midnight.

Our next trip sponsored by Izorline leaves Feb 12 and it is a fly home trip that will give you the option of avoiding this ride up the line. With the fish on the Lower banks, this could make a perfect finish as it looks to be the water is sustaining a warm temperature of 76 degrees and should hold through March. With the extended day trip the Outside spots will be a great bet for wahoo and tuna especially in the later months we see and traditionally catch more wahoo at the Hurricane bank as the season continues. The scheduled trip is a go and we are looking forward to having more people interested as we move into the winter time fishery. Call the office if you have any questions about rental tackle or the status on the passenger load. The boat will be heading down on Feb 12 so get your spot now.

Andy Cates

Jan. 17, 2010

Good morning folks. Yesterday was pretty tough for us here. We moved around a bit trying to get in position and could not get on fish that would bite. You want to talk about frustrating. Any way we went up and caught bait last night and have a few tuna this morning. It looks like we have some fish gathered on us so we are hoping to pick here today. Biggest fish was high hundreds about 190. I sure hope this spot works out, so far better than yesterday.

Andy Cates

Jan. 15, 2010

Good morning folks, we are heading up to finish off at the lower banks. We will be there in the morning we will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Jan. 13, 2010

Good evening folks. A couple of chances on big fish matched with a couple of tackle failures. We did manage 8 fish from 150 to 185 pounds but landed nothing bigger. We are giving it one more day here and then heading up to finish off at the Lower Banks. We saw just enough sign here to try it again so hopefully it works out.

Andy Cates

Jan. 12, 2010

Good evening folks. We finished our day off nice with an area that had sign of big fish. We had about 8 bites in the afternoon and managed to land a 223, a 235, 236 and a 241. Needless to say we will be trying it again tomorrow and releasing fish under the 200 mark. Lets hope it works out.

Andy Cates

Jan. 12, 2010

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had another good day of fishing with the biggest fish caught by Bob Michner and he won himself a Pelagic jacket for his efforts. His winning fish was 206 and that was the biggest for the day. More of the stock grade fish this morning, but I think we are going to take a look around and see if there are any big ones somewhere.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Jan. 10, 2010

Good evening folks. We had a really nice first day here today. Excellent action on fish from 75 to 230 pounds. There were a few bigger ones mixed in but up to 180 pounds was the biggest. Tomorrow we are going to spend some time looking around to see if there is much bigger fish. Bill Campbell won the daily jack pot with a 200 dollar gift certificate to Angers Center in Newport beach. He was stoked.

Tomorrow it looks like biggest fish will get a Pelagic jacket.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Jan. 8, 2010

Another day of travel with very nice weather. A tuna seminar and a little rigging this afternoon and that was it. Not much else to report, one more day of travel tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Jan. 7, 2010

Good morning folks. So far, we have had very nice weather on our 15 day Pelagic/Catchy Tackle Sponsored trip. We had a great raffle yesterday afternoon and I would like to thank Pelagic, Catchy tackle ,Mustad hooks and Five star fish processing for the contributions for the trip. John Grabowski and David Dudley put together Mustad bags for each passenger full of hooks and hats that I hope will be useful throughout the trip.

Today we did a quick seminar on Jack Pot and fish processing and are headed down. Where, I am not sure yet, but South it is.

We will report again tomorrow!

Foursome For Joe’s Guys

Joe D’Aquisto docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing January 5 after a ten-day trip with 15 anglers, who bagged four cows along with a good catch of other tuna.

Michael Rosenthal won first place for a 231.7-pound tuna that bit his sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 30 reel and an "Armbreaker" short rod of five feet made by Calstar.

Hans Rueckert of LA took an hour and a half and a skiff ride to bag the larger of his two cows for second place. That one weighed 220.7 pounds. The smaller one went 202.6 pounds. He used the same outfit: a sardine on a 4/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 80-pound Big Game on a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 7670 H rod.

Terry Marx of Las Vegas won third place for his 220.5-pounder, which he got with a sardine on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Yo-Zuri line and 130-pound Line One backing on a Penn 50 SW reel and a Lamiglass acid wrap 5110 rod.

Good Afternoon Folks. We started out great this morning on forty pound fish with a handful of better ones. This afternoon the current changed and the fish all moved off the edge. We are now heading into to the lower banks in hopes of trophies. Wish us luck.

Good evening folks, We got down to the rocks at ten and started to fish. When we first started it looked really good and then the current died. We didn't get our current back all day till dark. We scratched during the afternoon on that forty to fifty pound fish. Which was average for the day with an occasional twenty five pounder or seventy pounder. We will be here tomorrow wish us luck. The weather is beautiful, grease calm.

Good morning folks

We are heading out on our annual 10 new years with a great group of anglers. We are planning to go to Alijos Rocks first to get some filler fish and then go down to cow town from there. We will be at the rocks tomorrow. Wish us luck and we will report back later.
