Summer 2017

Sept. 9, 2017

We started the morning with a nice little pick on yellows. The fishing only lasted until 10:00 and we spent the rest of the day for just a few small tuna. We are headed in and should be in around 8:00 in the morning

Sept. 8, 2017

The fishing died at about 2:00 both days. Heading up the beach now to try for yellows and then clearance. More photos of the quality tuna at Guadalupe Is.

Sept. 7, 2017

Tough fishing today.

Sharks really had there way with us.

Lots of hook ups just tough
to get through the Whites

Sept. 6, 2017

Pretty good sign of tuna here this evening.
Took a thrashing from the Sharks, ate everything we hooked .
We got in here late so hopefully tomorrow
Couple of decent yellows ,maybe tonight we can pick off a few

Good morning. We are on our way out to the Island with Big Ed from Baja Fish Gear and the group. Windy and choppy all the way out and looks like we will arrive after lunch.
Fishing will start this afternoon and we will post as we go. Here we go on our first Guadalupe run.
Wish us luck!

Sept. 4, 2017

We finished up this Charkbait 5-day trip trying for yellowtail. The action was slow for most of the day but we did get one nice burst of biting yellowtail. It was a great way to wrap up this very enjoyable fishing trip. Thanks to Mark Smith from Charkbait for the giveaways and t-shirts.
Here is Fred with his first ever yellowtail.

Tom Ferrari

Sept. 3, 2017

We had a great evening bite today. After spending a morning searching for yellowtail we made a 20 mile move, getting into the area at 3 o'clock. Once the fish got on us it was a very exciting couple of hours. We finished the evening with 23 bluefin over 100 pounds. Great biting fish and awesome size.

Tom Ferrari

Sept. 2, 2017

We were fortunate this morning to find a school first thing. These bluefin were biting very good. Any good swimming bait off the stern was a hook up. Fun morning on quality fish. Sandra gets some help from Fernando holding up this fish.

Sept. 1, 2017

It was very foggy this morning which made looking around difficult. Once the fog lifted we got on a nice school of tuna and started picking off these dandy fish. Martin is back aboard this trip and as usual he is catching fish.

Aug. 31, 2017

We had a really nice stop here just before dark. The group easily caught their daily limit of bluefin. They kept biting into the dark on the glow jigs. One angler had 5 bites in a row on his glow and chrome jig. What a great start, and it's only the first evening. Hopefully we can get on them in the morning.

Tom Ferrari.

We are getting this Charkbait 5-day trip started early with some local Bluefin action. Mark has the honors of first catch

Aug. 30, 2017

These bigger yellowfin are a nice surprise. Sean was on this one for quite a while.

Aug. 29, 2017

We have had a good couple of days of fishing. We spent the first day fishing the Baja coast for yellowtail and school size tuna. The second day was spent in pursuit of better grade bluefin and yellowfin tuna.

Aug. 27, 2017

Eta: 6 to 6:30 am. Monday

This isn't the best magazine quality snapshot but it's a fun shot of John with his big tuna. We are wrapping up this 3-day charter and heading for San Diego. We saw a lot of fish today, making stops all day. We hooked a good amount of bluefin but the vast majority got away. This group of guys really had a great attitude all day and tried to make the most of their opportunities. It's too bad our hook to land ratio was so lopsided.

Aug. 26, 2017

We had a very productive day of yellowtail fishing today. Good grade and good action. We are going to slide north and try for bluefin in the morning.

Tom Ferrari

We left yesterday on a 5 day trip put together by Larry Brown. We wanted to thanks the sponsors after a generous raffle that we had to start the trip, We are offshore trying to locate the school size tuna with not much luck yet

Aug. 18, 2017

Nice lighting on this one

Conditions changed for the worse on the beach spots and made the fishing spotty today, We still managed some nice grade yellows

Aug. 17, 2017

Picked off another kelp for some dorado action and continued to work up the line.

We will be trying for yellowtail in the morning

Aug. 16, 2017

We trolled around for a while and had no strikes only a little bit of small tuna in the morning. We started running back up and spent some time catching dorado off a kelp. This is one of the better size fish.

We made a stop on the beach for dinner and picked up a few yellows. Will be fishing in the morning.

Aug. 13, 2017

We had a nice action packed last day of our Bob Michener 3-day. The tuna were very cooperative give mg us plenty of chances to stop the boat. Our best stop was for 70 tuna, that was busy.
Here is Bob himself with his "toy" Accurate Valiant reel.

Aug. 11, 2017

We had a nice day fishing for these school size tuna. We started off good with a couple of productive drifts. Then we went cold for most of the day before connecting with another biting school just before dark. We are going to give it another try tomorrow.

Aug. 9, 2017

The last couple of days of this 5 day trip have been very tough. The weather and sea conditions have made working hard and it scattered the fish. The whole fleet was in search mode today without much results. It was a disappointing day. We will be home tomorrow @ 07:00

Aug. 8, 2017

Yesterday we had a nice morning catching quality yellowtail. Unfortunately the fishing died around lunchtime. We looked around at another couple of nearby spots for nothing before we turned and headed back north. The weather has been choppy all night and morning but it's starting to flatten out. We should be in the tuna grounds this afternoon.

Aug. 6, 2017

Finished up our first day of fishing here on the tuna grounds. We had a nice morning but the action shut down midday. We are headed south looking to connect with some yellowtail for tomorrow. I will try to remember to take pictures.

Tom Ferrari

The Good kelp fishing continues. We are stopping on a lot of kelps and it seems Iike everyone is holding fish. The grade varies from release size to jackpot fish.

We followed our line of kelp into the east. We kept seeing paddies but the fish weren't on them anymore. We hit 3 dry kelps then turned back out west on a different line. Hopefully this is the first of more fish this evening.

We are almost at the end of our Mahoney & McVey 8 day trip. We started the trip with great yellowtail action. Everybody limited out on excellent quality fish. We have spent the last two days fishing grouper and looking offshore for kelp patty fish and loose schools. The water is nice and warm and the patties are numerous but most of the fish have been release size. We have kept a sample of better sized dorado and tuna. We are going to finish up our day down in this 8-day zone and start traveling up tomorrow. There should be a couple of hours to fish someplace on the way home but where depends on our timing.
The pictures I've been taking haven't wanted to upload through the satellite wifi. I will post pictures when we return to San Diego on Saturday.
