Dec. 29, 2012

Good evening anglers, today we fished Cedros island and had good fishing with about 100 yellowtail and a good number of bass to go along with them. The weather held for most of the day and was great till about noon then the wind picked up for about 3 hours (worried us a little) before it came down again. Were homeward bound at the moment and will stop tomorrow for a few hours in the morning to fish before heading for the barn. Great weather all the way home is expected so we are exited about that! Hope you guys are enjoying the holidays because we sure are here. Another awesome day on the water aboard the Red Rooster 3!

Dec. 28, 2012

Good afternoon anglers, yesterday the 27th, was a fair day with about 120 different rock fish and sheep head to go around. We had 20 to 25 knots of wind so the yellowtail were down for the afternoon by the time we got down here but we made a nice catch for the afternoon here none the less. Today the wind subsided and it gave a us a better chance to scout around for a bit, with conditions changing through the full moon we managed a few handfuls of yellowtail along with some excellent rockcod and sheep head. The sun was out and everyone got there fill and had a great time. Tonight we are going to make a move and head farther south and move into a little warmer water and try for some more yellowtail tomorrow. Don't worry guys pictures will be up soon!

Dec. 26, 2012

Good evening anglers,

Today we left on our annual after Christmas 5 day. After getting a good load of bait we cleared Point Loma about 1:30 pm going south in search for some late year action. Its a little cold out but we have chef Chapman's signature New York steaks for dinner tonight to keep us warm. Wish us luck guys!

Square Mile Of Dodos

Joe Crisci brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing after a 10-day trip with 29 anglers aboard, including outdoor writer Jim Niemic and chartermaster Norm Fujimoto, a rep for Izorline and Calstar, the trip’s sponsors.

“We had some very good wahoo fishing the first afternoon we arrived on The Ridge,” said Joe, “where the water was 72 degrees. We weren’t really ready, and we lost a lot of fish; I’ll bet everybody dumped at least two. But we got some, too.”

The big wahoo of the catch weighed in at 77 pounds, caught by Sanny Westfall of San Diego, who won the Coveted Trolling Jacket for his feat.

“We found some good yellowfin action off Mag Bay,” continued Joe, “but no dorado there. We went down to look at the lower banks, and not far from one of them we found a gigantic school of dorado, there must have been a square mile of ‘em. There were jumpers everywhere! Below that, the water was green and 79 degrees. We went back up and looked at the Spud for nothing and then up to The Ridge again for some more yellowfin we got the three biggest fish there, on the kite.”

Pat Dirindin of Ft. Lauderdale, FL won first place for a 150.8-pound tuna that ate the squid dangled under the kite. The squish was pinned to a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook and the kite outfit made use of 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar six and a half-foot rod.

Alex Kitzes of Hercules won second place for a 141-pound tuna, and Rob Campbell of Sequim, WA produced a 139-pound yellowfin tuna; that was big enough to take third place.

The Rooster’s next trip is a five-day, leaving December 26.

our ETA to the dock is 6:00 am.

Dec. 14, 2012

The wahoo fishing was tough today. We only managed to pick up one skin for the day. We did collect 20 yellowtail on the anchor first thing this morning. The weather made fishing challenging today. It was very rough on the anchor last night and it was mixed up all day. It seems to be laying down now, so hopefully that trend continues. We are steaming north this evening, going to try to finish up our trip with some yellowtail action.

Red Rooster III

Dec. 13, 2012

We had a great day of tuna fishing today. It was a steady bite all day with most of the fish in the 20 to 30 pound range with sprinkling of 40 pounders. The kite fish were the real stand outs today. There were probably about 3 fish over 100 pounds and about 5-6 in the 70+ pound range. nice quality Yellowfin. We also managed to pick up about 20 nice yellowtail for the guys who wanted to work the yo-yo jigs. Tomorrow is going to be dedicated to wahoo fishing.

Red Rooster III

Dec. 12, 2012

We spent today searching the lower banks for big tuna. We covered a lot of water today with out catching any tuna. We saw a little bit of sign but couldn't get any bites. The only fish today were a couple of dorado and one wahoo on the troll. I'm including a picture of Sanny from Chula Vista with his super skin he trolled up. He is downstairs right now getting measured for the coveted troll jacket.

Dec. 11, 2012

What a great day of fishing we had today. We started off fishing for school size south of the ridge. We had phenomenal action for the whole morning until after lunch when we left to try for something different. The Yellowfin tuna were mixed with skipjack so on a couple of stops so we had to fish the dead sardines and chunk bait to avoid hooking the skippies. That seemed to be the best way to "clean up" the stops. A couple of guys who were tossing poppers and surface irons were having a lot of fun. It was awesome to watch the yellowfin blow up on the poppers, even when they missed the hooks. After we had enough we headed south to look for bigger tuna and maybe some dorados. Late afternoon Nick in the tower saw some circling frigate birds and some splashing dorados. When we pulled up on the area it was game on. All passengers aboard seemed to hook up at the same time. After a couple chaotic hours captain Joe decided we were "good" on dorado and pulled the plug. We are currently steaming south, hopefully a rendezvous with big tuna is in our future. Wish us luck.

Red Rooster III

Dec. 10, 2012

We didn't get down to the ridge area until mid afternoon today. The speed coming down wasn't all that good. We got the jigs in the water and started to pick up some wahoo. We hooked 16 skin fairly quickly then they backed off. There were some very small tuna in the area but we weren't all that interested in them. So after trying it on the anchor for the sunset we are heading further south in search of something better. We will be on location first thing in the morning. Hopefully there is some action to be had.

Red Rooster III

Dec. 9, 2012

Today was a day of travel. we are headed south in search of good water and fish. we had a fast turn around on Saturday, unloading from our 14 westcoast angler/mark moffat trip, then restocking the boat, loading a fresh group of anglers and heading out. Norm from izorline had a bunch of great raffle prizes to go along with the always coveted izorline/red rooster t-shirts. Big thanks to the sponsors for their contributions to the prize pool; izorline, tady lures. sportsman's seafood and fish processing, Bill Roecker, and Mustad hooks. Accurate reels and Calstar rods also provided some nice loaner gear for the guys to use. We are going to be in the zone tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully we get some action.

Good evening folks. We are on our way home now and just finished up the trip this morning.

The last couple of days have been poor and thankful for the fishing we had the first five days of the trip. It was really a nice trip with lots of action and some big fish to go with.

This morning we had a couple of fish from 170 to 190 and called it a trip. A lot more small fish around today that we did not need.

Good morning folks.

We finally are back on line and will be able to communicate Yesterday we finished off wit similar fishing as we had.

Three fish over two hundred and some fish in the high hundreds up to 196 to go with that.

It was tough fishing but wit the chance at a big one it made it nice . A lot of rail time paid off for the lucky angler.

A lot different than the fishing we had out here the last couple of years. less of that 80 to 140 but in this case more chances at big fish.

We have between 12 to 15 fish over 200 for the trip. First time cow catchers took the prize this year and quite a few Red Rooster 200 pound club jackets will be handed out.

A lot of work and the bites did not come easy .

Chris Mohr one the Accurate prize. A Boss 600 for the first fish over 200. The fish taped out 202 but it made the mark on the boat and got the reel.

There are other prizes throughout the day for first this and first that. Accurate products , Salas lures are given out as the fish hit the deck.

We have a great Jack Pot trophy this year that Gary Teraoka Made up that will be going to Charlie Martinez for his 270 pounder.

We will stay in touch

CharkBait Annual

Joe Crisci backed Red Rooster III in at H&M Landing November 8 following the yearly CharkBait trip with 29 anglers and chartermaster John Hazlett aboard.

“We fished on The Ridge and local,” said skipper Crisci. “We had great fishing on The Ridge for yellowtail and yellowfin tuna, and we found dorado on a floating dead turtle.”

On her first eight-day trip, Adell Fuller won first place for her 69-pound tuna. It came on a double trouble sardine rig under the fishing kite, on one of the boat’s kite rigs: 100-pound Izorline, 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXH rod.

“This is an awesome boat,” she said at the scales, “and so was the crew and the fishing. It was all nice.”

Tony Elazegui of San Diego won second place for a 54-pound yellowfin tuna. Steve Vetrone of Santa Fe Springs won third place for a 49.8-pound tuna. The trolling jacket was won by Joe May of Orlando, for a 38-pound wahoo.

Nov. 5, 2012

The ride up last night was great, the weather so for this trip has been awesome. The fishing today was not as we had hoped, not much to report. We looked at a lot of very good water but there just wasn't much in it. We trolled up a couple of nice big wahoo but that was it. We saw a lot of dorado jumping at various times of the day but they weren't eager to hit the jigs. The day ended with a beautiful sunset and we are headed for a different area to try tomorrow, with hopefully different results. We'll check in tomorrow and let you know.

Nov. 4, 2012

We got anchored up in the early hours of the morning and a few of the folks got up and gave it a try. There wasn't much going on until after daylight. We began to see a few fish boil and it wasn't long after that we hooked a fish. The grade of fish was from 18 to 60 pounds so it was necessary to use at least 40# line because you never knew what size fish was going to bite. With almost steady action throughout the day, it seemed like everyone had an opportunity at one of the better ones. We are heading up tonight offshore in hopes to find some action tomorrow.

Nov. 3, 2012

When we arrived on the ridge last night we got the anchor down. There was some action till about midnight on some yellows. They ranged from 12 to 15 pounds. At daylight we started to see pretty good sign of some tuna around and it wasn't long before we started hooking a few. The tuna started to build around us throughout the morning and we had good action till around noon. The current backed off for a little while so we decided to do a bit of trolling. We managed to catch a few wahoo as we drove around waiting for the current to start up again. Once we started seeing tuna jump around again we put the anchor down and finished off the day with similar action on the tuna as we had earlier. It was a great of action for all. We are heading down a little further to look for some bigger tuna, we'll be there in the morning. The weather has been great so for and we hope it stays that way. Wish us luck and we'll let you know later.

Nov. 2, 2012

We traveled all day south and for the most part was uneventful till the late afternoon. We spotted a bloated carcass of a sea turtle that had some really nice dorado swimming around it. As we began our circle around it, screams of hook-up stopped the boat. It was somewhat chaotic for bit and then they were done biting. It was a really nice way to end a long day of looking and traveling. We hope to have some similar action tomorrow. We will be at our destination this evening, and we are looking forward to waking up to some biting fish. see you all tomorrow.

Nov. 1, 2012

Today did not go as we had hoped. We started out the morning in green water and it took us a few hours to run out of it. When we were out of the ugly water we put some jigs in the water hoping to get lucky. We ran for while before we got our first strikes, it turned out to be a big spread out area of small tuna. We threw back everything we hooked . We ran a little longer with our jigs in the water just to be sure we were not going to miss anything good. The next few strikes we had were nice big dorados. We caught a handful and decided to keep on heading south. With not much else to do up this way, we will most likely be heading south most of the day tomorrow as well. We will let you know then.

Oct. 31, 2012

We left the dock today with 29 passengers on board for the 8 day Charkbait charter. We picked up our load of bait for the trip and are heading south. The weather is great and everybody is gearing up for what we hope will be a great fishing trip. We are hoping to be in productive fishing grounds around noon tomorrow. Until then we want to wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween.

10-28-12

Raising The Ante

Last year Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing October 30 with a pair of cows, one of which went 268 pounds. You could call it a good opener for the boat, but this year Cates stomped all over his year-old mark with a boatload of cows, 30 to be exact. One weighed 291 pounds, just missing the supercow mark, and was exceptional, coming from the Hurricane Bank, which seldom marks fish over 300 pounds.

The trip was 14 days, with 24 anglers, a Loftus-Martin charter.

“We didn’t have bad weather,” said Cates to dock reporter Bill Roecker October 28, “ but we did have some bumps and breeze coming home.”

Most of the fish came on sardines, but a few were taken on mackerel or skipjack, and two were caught on jigs. Many were just short of 200 pounds, coming in at 180 to 198 pounds.

The monster of the catch was T.J. Lee’s 291-pound whopper yellowfin. Lee, from Huntington Beach, got that baby with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline. He said he fished with 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 70 reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod. He also had one at 208 pounds.

Bill Walsh of Chino Hills won second place for a 229.6-pounder that bit a skipjack baited on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 J hook and 130-pound Yo-Zuri leader tied to 130-pound spectra. He fished with an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Phenix 700 XXXXH rod. Bill also caught a 204-pounder, but did not appear for the lineup shot after the weighing, ceding his spot to the best trollfish, a wahoo taken by Bob Cherry of Santa Monica.

Jim Ballard found quintuplets in the sea. The best one, a 229-pounder, won third place, but Bill didn’t pose with it in the winner’s lineup shot, ceding his spot to the best trollfish, a wahoo taken by Bob Cherry of Santa Monica. Ballard’s other tuna weighed 209, 211, 214 and 214 pounds.

Clarence Becker of Victorville got a brace weighed 218 and 228 pounds. He baited sardines on 7/0 ringed Eagle Claw hooks and fished with 130-pound Momoi and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Avet T Rex 30 reel and a 770 XXH rod.

Al Jackson of Buena Park bagged a 226-pounder, and a 214. Al got his on sardines and a 7/0 Mustad Demon hook tied to 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon. He used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 7465 XH rod.

Bob Cherry of Santa Monica spent an hour acquainting himself with a 224-pound tuna that bit a sardine on a Mustad Demon 7/0 hook and 130-pound Izorline. Bob fished with 130-pound Izorline spectra, and Avet 50 W reel and a Calstar 7455 XXH rod.

Bob “Scrappy” Michener of Oxnard, an Accurate rep, found a 206-pound tuna with an ABC jig in white and glow finish. He tied the jig to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Accurate spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Sam Lewis of Chino caught a 202-pound tuna with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook and 130-pound Yo-Zuri leader. He used 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Stephen Keanly of Capetown, South Africa came a long way, but was more than pleased with his 201-pound yellowfin. He said it found his mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad Demon hook irresistible. He used 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXXXH rod.

Good evening folks.

Another long day of travel. The weather was a little better but now it is up again for dinner.

One more full day and then we will be home. I am not sure what time we are getting in , it depends on the weather . We still have 370 miles to go.

We will report tomorrow

Andy Cates

Oct. 25, 2012

Good evening folks.

So far things are going fine. A little bumpy on the way up but the weather is supposed to be better tomorrow. We held off cleaning the boat and have that to do and also Margarita happy hour in the afternoon. Should be a fun filled day.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy

Oct. 24, 2012

Good evening folks.

We are headed up and enjoying decent weather. We now have communication and will be posting reports again. Unfortunately all the smoke has fallen and we don't have any more fishing for a few days.

Looking back, what a great trip especially for the first one down south. What a great grade of fish. The guys were exhausted after the first three days and fought through it on the last couple. Hopefully things hold up and we can put together a couple more trips like this one.

Tommy sent in some pictures, Those were just a few, but you get the idea on the grade.

We will keep in touch on the way home

Oct. 23, 2012

Good evening folks.

We have been out of touch since we got to the bank. We are heading up to the Island to end the trip after great fishing outside.

First day we arrived at noon and saw great life but mostly small fish. Once we got the anchor down we started picking off nice grade fish from 150 to 200 pounds. Ending the first afternoon with 33 tuna.

The second day was the big day with less small fish to deal with and the bite starting at 400 in the morning. A big ball of perfect size skipjack were the bait of choice. At sunrise we had 22 fish from 180 to 200 pounds. We continued to pick all day with another hit before dark ending the day with 81 tuna from 160 to 240 pounds. The sardine fishing and kite were the bait of choice after the skipjack left in the morning.

The third day brought slower fishing but a pick on fish from 175 up. We released only a handful of fish in the 150 range and had fish up to 280 pounds.

The fourth day was very similar a pick on big fish and very few releases. Fish from 175 to 240, 33 fish for the day.

This morning we left after the morning shot and had a dozen fish from 180 to 240 , all Skipjack fish. A couple on the big jigs .

There was a great percentage of fish in the 195 to 205 range. The grade was pretty spectacular. The weather was really nice with just enough wind to get the kites out.

This was another classic 14 day October Bank trip on the Red Rooster 111. Good timing and great fishing are what it is all about We will send pictures and more reports as long as the phone signal lets us.

Andy Cates

Photos will be added soon.

Oct. 22, 2012

The Red Rooster III is having an amazing trip with unbelievable fishing!!! Captain Andy has spoken with another long-range boat Captain who passed on to us that they have several fish over 200lbs!!!

If we hear anything more, we will be sure to report it!

Red Rooster III Team

The Red Rooster III satellite phone is down, however the boat is fine. We are getting position reports every day. There are no fish reports due to the satellite phone being down.

Sorry for the inconvenience. We will report as soon as we hear anything!

Oct. 16, 2012

Good evening folks.

A nice day of travel here today. 15 knots of wind from the Northwest and just a slight south swell. We spent the day doing top-shots and getting the tuna gear rigged up for the Bank. Tomorrow we will do another seminar on wahoo and another Loftus and Martin raffle. So far so good and we will be at the Bank day after tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Oct. 15, 2012

Good evening folks.

We are heading down on our first long trip of the year. 14 day Loftus and Martin sponsored. We have a great load of sardines and heading down the outside to skirt the storm coming up the coast. It looks like we will be fine and opening the gap by heading further out to the west before going down. Tomorrow should be the wind and rain but we should see no more than 15 to 20 knots. If so we can continue out and find better seas. It looks to be heading in toward Mag bay which will give us close to a three hundred mile barrier.

We will report on progress tomorrow

Andy Cates

Flat City

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing October 13 after the eight-day Seaguar/Catchy Tackle/American Premier Rods trip with 27 anglers and chartermaster Richard Hightower aboard for a ride to Flat City, outside of Mag Bay in kelp-free 82-degree waters. Big dorado were encountered several times, said Hightower.

“We had great fishing in hot water,” noted HT, “as warm as 84 degrees. Yellowtail fishing was excellent. There was nothing doing on the upper end of The Ridge. Thetis Bank was great on yellowtail and big bottomfish, but not much in the way of larger tuna, just plenty of small ones.

“The dorado were free-swimmers. They were all over the place outside the bay. We got easy limits.”

Skipper Cates observed, “There were birds on scattered fish. The schools came up inn the afternoons.”

Jeff Pardi of San Rafael won first place for his 36.4-pound yellowfin tuna. He had several nice ones. He said he got the winner with a sardine on a 4/0 Mustad J hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 60-pound Line One spectra. He fished with an Avet MJX reel and a Seeker Black Steel eight-foot rod in the Deckhand series.

Mark Gillig of Phelan won second place for a 35.4-pound yellowfin tuna. Ernie Beltra of La Puente won third place for his 35-pound yellowtail.

Joe Hellerman of Hermosa Beach won the trolling jacket for a hefty 69-pound wahoo that bit an orange and black Marauder on the boat’s trolling gear.

An earlier report that indicated the big skinny was caught at 30 miles, the closest anyone could remember. Skipper Cates said that was a misprint, that the wahoo was caught at 230 miles.

The Rooster’s next trip is a 14-day excursion that will undoubtedly visit southern waters, based on what’s been happening down there.

Good evening folks.

We had a fair show on decent size yellows today. Unfortunately lost them in the rocks and weeds. We managed a couple and some nice Bass on the plastics. A nice intermediate day with good weather. Tomorrow we will be offshore and hoping for a couple of Jack Pot fish. As it is the Dorado have taken the cake. A half day of fishing of fishing tomorrow and then on our way up.

We will report again tomorrow

Oct. 10, 2012

Good morning folks.

Yesterday was an epic dorado day. Really nice fish. Flat calm , hot weather with dorado swimming through the corner. Probably where our Jack Pot fish will come from. Dorado for Jack Pot? It is looking that way. We anchored back up and caught some more small tuna and another grouper and a few Yellows.

We started working up this morning after 40 small tuna on another ridge spot and no Wahoo. Trolling our way up now and will be at Cedros tomorrow for a few Yellows in the morning and then maybe a little Bass fishing. Bait, and then offshore for the final act.

We will report again tomorrow

Oct. 9, 2012

Good morning folks.

We had a very slow day looking outside the Ridge. All day looking for nothing floating. 82 degree water certainly no kelps.

We anchored up in the evening and started scratching at Yellowfin, Yellowtail and dorado. We kept hooking fish untill the morning. The guys that stayed up enjoyed catching fish wit nobody at the rail. There were a few Grouper mixed in as well. Only one wahoo for the day. We will be in pursuit today and hoping for a big day on dorado.

Andy Cates

Oct. 7, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a great day of yellowtail fishing. And now heading South. We spent the end of the day offshore and came up with nothing. Thankfully the Yellowtail cooperated and provided a great day.

Oct. 6, 2012

Good evening folks.

We started an 8 day trip with Richard Hightower sponsoring with Seagar and Yo- Zuri.

We left yesterday with a decent load of bait and woke up this morning with windy weather.

We put the Jigs out this afternoon and first fish was a nice 60 pound wahoo. @30 miles from Point Loma. Followed by scattered strikes on small tuna and a couple of 30 pound tuna. If not for the wind and sea it would have been a nice chance to look around in that area.

We are headed down and trying for yellows tomorrow and hope the weather gets better soon.

Good evening folks.

We had a half day today with the distance from the point. And took off at lunch time and headed for home. We had jig strikes on about 25 school size tuna and picked up a handful of fish up in the 45 pound class range.

It would have been nice to look around a little more where we caught that bigger fish. We just did not have the time. Anyway it was nice to get a few fish before heading home. Will be at the docks @ 8 AM

We leave on an 8 day tomorrow

Oct. 3, 2012

Good evening folks.

We spent the morning fishing school size tuna on porpoise. Things didn't get busy untill about 9:00 and then we had steady action untill we left it to do an evening for yellowtail. A few nice dorado mixed in today and all in all a very nice day of fishing. With the great weather our hopes are up for one last hit tomorrow offshore. After we get bait tonight we will head up and look for a few better grade fish. Lets hope it works out.

Andy Cates

Oct. 2, 2012

Good evening folks.

Another day of scratch fishing on Wahoo. Not many on the casting jigs. Most fish on the sardine and wire leader. We saw a few tuna jump around but only picked off a few smaller one's. We left the Rock's and started looking for floating objects offshore. A long day with a surprise right before dark that brought action on nice size dorado. Ending the day with 19 wahoo 56 dorado and a few small tuna.

Tomorrow we will be offshore looking for action on school size tuna and then maybe a quick stop for a few yellows.

Andy Cates

Oct. 1, 2012

Good evening folks.

About what we figured here today. A few stops on wahoo a few on the anchor. After losses to the sharks and just the typical losses of wahoo fishing we ended the day with 14 wahoo. We are going to give it the morning and see how it goes. The action was good enough to stay and give the guys another chance at wahoo. The weather is getting better and looks like we may have good conditions to look offshore tomorrow afternoon.

Andy Cates

Good morning folks.

The Ridge paid off good with great yellowtail fishing. Surface action and fast action made for a productive afternoon. A lot of Yo- Yo fish but also surface iron and flyline fish as well. Decent grade 15 to 25 pound fish. Today we are looking offshore and may be at Alijos Rocks I f we don't find anything on the way. It is that time of the year when we start getting wahoo and dorado on kelps. The water condition is great and we will give it the morning looking around.

We will report again later

Andy Cates

Sept. 29, 2012

Good evening folks

Our first day was pretty poor with windy conditions and really not much fish. We looked our way down the coast and kept some small tuna and a few dorado. At very least we caught some small fish for dinner or lunch.

We are going to try for yellows today after a successful bait session last night. Hopefully we have a good day on yellow.

Andy Cates

Sept. 28, 2012

Good evening folks We just left on a fall 7 day trip. The bait is not great and really half a load is what we got. Hopefully we can make the most of it. Angler's Center sponsored and a great giveaway from Pelagic, Shimano, Ballyhood lures, PeterJ gallery, Tiburon engineering, 5 Star fish processing and Tady Lures.

Thanks guy's.

We will be offshore tomorrow in hopes of tuna and dorado.

The weather is up a little so hopefully we can work with that and have a nice day

We finished up this 6-day open party trip with some more great offshore action. We finished up with 108 Yellowfin tuna and 40 more Dorado. The dorado were those large models and we managed to score a some premium Yellowfin off a dolphin school. What a great way to end an action filled trip.

We have a 7:00 am eta for tomorrow.

Red Rooster III

Sept. 26, 2012   ETA is7 AM Friday

Today was a good day offshore. We spend most of the day jig striking on small tuna and dorado, releasing the smaller fish and tagging the better size ones. Trevor and Nick found a handful of boomer kelps that produced most of the action. The Dorado the guys caught off the kelps today were almost all good size with few that had to be released. We also caught all of our better size tunas off the last kelp of the day. we ended up with about 12 nice grade Yellowfin tuna in the 25-40 lb range and about 60 of that smaller grade fish. All in all a productive day. We are going to run up and try to end the trip with some bluefin tuna. The weather is beautiful right now, lets hope it holds.

Red Rooster III

Sept. 25, 2012

We had a great day of Yellowtail fishing today. We all got up early and made a well of perfect size mini green mackerel, and that was what helped to jump start our successful day. The yellows were inhaling the local baits full speed along with plenty of bites on the yo-yo and surface jigs. The guys caught all the yellows they wanted and we had to leave them swimming all around the boat. The average size of the fish is 18-20 pounds with a some of the larger models throw in to keep it interesting. We are going to stop and top off our bait supply and then head out to the hot tuna grounds for our last day and a half.

Red Rooster III

Sept. 24, 2012

Today was a fairly good day of Yellowtail fishing. We switched locations mid morning and that got us on some biting fish. We ended up with 150 nice grade yellows for our efforts. The bite wavered about mid afternoon when the wind came up, but there was one more wave of yellowtail to make for a fun sundowner. We will be fishing here tomorrow hoping that the bite starts early and goes late. Wish us luck.

Red Rooster III

Sept. 23, 2012

We spent the day fishing offshore today and managed to stay fairly busy. There was plenty of jig stops and kelp paddies to occupy us. The kelps were numerous and large but most of them were not holding fish. We tagged 30 nice size dorados and, after throwing back the smallest size fish, about 40 tuna. We will be yellowtail fishing tomorrow.

Good evening folks.

Thankfully we had a great day of yellowtail fishing. Nice size 15to 25 pound fish. Great surface visual with Yellow's snaking around on the surface. A needed and enjoyable day.

We are looking for bait tonight and after today we are good on Yellowtail. Back offshore in hopes of big Bluefin and Yellowfin. This gives us 2 days and hopefully we get lucky.

Sept. 17, 2012

Today was a tough start for our Pennel 6 day trip. It was a down day for the bluefin tuna, the phrase you should have been here yesterday comes to mind. We did manage to scrape together 9 elusive Albacore, and about 12 mixed Bluefin, Yellowfin and dorado for our day. We will be offshore again tomorrow hoping for better cooperation from the fish.

Izorline report

Izorline Trip Scores Big

Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing September 16 after the best trip so far this season for larger bluefin tuna. Most anglers had a couple of the tubby tuna that ranged from 60 to 100 pounds.

The initial encounter was in the afternoon, remarked Cates.

“It started slow, with tuna blowing out all around us. Some of the guys were frustrated, but that’s bluefin fishing.”

The next morning he headed east, the direction in which the good water was moving, and located a different school, with fish just a shade smaller, about 7:30 a.m. This bunch bit even better than the afternoon school, he said.

Anthony LoGrande of San Pedro won first place for the one tuna that broke the 100-pound mark, a 107-pound bluefin that bit on his Spanish mackerel. He said he pinned it on a 2/0 ringed Owner Gorilla hook tied to 40-pound Izorline flourocarbon, 40-pound pink Ande line and 65-pound Izorline spectra. He fished with a Newell 533 reel with a Tiburon narrow conversion kit and a Calstar 610 rod.

“It took about 45 minutes,” said Anthony. “It’s my best fish ever.”

Mark Wallace of Winter Springs, FL won second place for a 91.4-pounder, and Frank Brown Jr. of San Diego won third place for a 90-pound bluefin tuna.

Sept. 15, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a kelp this morning with 70 tuna. 25 of them 30 to 40 pounders and the rest small kelp grade tuna. It was a long drift and kept the action going with releasing small tuna. Only a dozen dorado for the day . All in all a nice day with great weather.

W will be in at 7:00 in the morning

See you then

Andy Cates

Sept. 14, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had another nice morning on yellows. Same nice grade of fish. We jigged up squid last night and found good success with them this morning. We left late morning and started heading up to finish offshore for our last day. Dorado would be a nice finisher and a few tuna. We will see how it goes.

Andy Cates.

Sept. 13, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day yellowtail fishing. Most of it came in the morning and a little pick mid day. The evening was non existent with very little sign. Nice grade of yellow 18 to 25 pounds and mostly Yo-Yo fishing. We are going to fish yellows again tomorrow and then finish up offshore the last day.

Andy Cates

Sept. 12, 2012

Good morning folks.

So far this morning 37 bluefin from 75 to 100 pounds. Still have 5 going and a great hit to start out with.

Andy Cates

Sept. 11, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had great action all morning on kelp grade yellowfin tuna and dorado. Three kelps with "See them swimming in the water action". A great start of the trip. A few upper grade fish mixed in up to 35 pounds but not many. The majority are 12 to 18 pond fish. Great action.

The afternoon was a surprise with an area of 80 to 100 pound Bluefin. Great visual with big fish boiling as far as you could see. We kept 4 to 7 fish going until dark and ended up with 23 trophy Bluefin. Are bait situation will be ok for another day and we will try this again. It was a really lucky deal and any sign tomorrow would be great. Flat calm weather and what an epic day.

We will report again tomorrow

Today was a tough day offshore. We only managed to pick up a handful of tuna and 6 dorado for our efforts today. We could only fish for a partial day before we had to call it and head for the barn.

Special thanks to our host from Charkbait, Paul, and to Charkbait for providing great give-a-ways and shirts for all the guys.

ETA for Monday is around 7:30.

Sept. 8, 2012

We had a fun day of yellowtail fishing today. The fish started to bite in the early morning after sunrise and they were fairly steady until around 11 am. Then the fishing slowed down and we had to work a little harder at it. We managed to scratch until the late afternoon when Joe was going to call it and run back to the tuna grounds. But as luck would have it the yellows started pushing bait and large bird schools got on it. We ran over and started to get some more of the good grade yellowtail. We kept this up until almost dark and finally we decide to start the run to the grounds.

Sept. 7, 2012

Our first day of this 4-day Charkbait trip turned out to be fairly successful. We only stopped on 2 kelps all day but the first kelp was holding some serious fish. We were still about 100 yards from the kelp when we got a 4 way jig strike. The tuna "climbed" the chum line and settled into the starboard corner eating every bait tossed over the side. The guys quickly overcame their first day jitters and put some fish on the boat. After that slowed down we ran up to the kelp proper and tried another drift. When we left the kelp we were stocked up on Yellowfin tuna and had a dozen or so nice size Dorado. We managed to keep busy the rest of the day with jig stops on tuna and Dorado. All in all a great way to start a trip. The weather was nice today with a hot sun and a slight breeze to compliment it. Tomorrow we try for yellowtail!

Sept. 5, 2012

Good evening anglers, we left yesterday on our day and a half trip and today was a great success. We had amazing weather and calm seas all day with great fishing to go along with it. With a few good kelps, a couple of sonar schools and porpoise we had steady action all day. The tuna fishing was on as well as the dorado with some nicer big bulls added to the mix, as for the yellow tail they were a little on the small side but we managed to weed em out and keep some better ones. All in all today was a great day to be on the water here on the Red Rooster 3. hope to see you guys soon.

Good evening folks. We had a great day with a 7 hour drift. We drifted and caught fish untill we left for home.

Yellowfin tuna wide open in the corner and then tapering off into a pick on better size fish. The first wave of fish were smaller 12to 20 pounds. "Bread and Butter" After the smoke fell we started to pick at the 25 to 40 pound fish. Not a lot but enough to keep it interesting. About 45 of the nicer size fish to go with the smaller grade. Flat calm, sunny weather to end a great trip.

Good Evening, We had a spectacular night bite on nice grade yellows last night. The move down to the ridge paid off with 18 to 30 pound yellows biting full speed from 2:00 in the morning untill day light.

Definitely a memorable night. Dropper loop heaven and heavy gear was the call. What a great hit. Hope we see that again soon. Tomorrow we will be looking offshore in hopes of tuna and dorado.

We will report again tomorrow

Aug. 27, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a great first day with a mix of Bluefin and Yellowfin. Some nice fish mixed in with some fish up to 40 pounds. The majority of the day saw fish from 15 to 25 pounds and the afternoon brought us a 5 hour drift that was almost all Bluefin.

We are offshore again tomorrow and are bait actually looks great. We spent a lot of time yesterday loading the sardine and it has paid off so far. We almost 200 mixed tuna for the day. Hoping for another good day tomorrow.

Good morning folks.

We are headed home after an epic morning. Wide open school size yellowfin with some nice yellowfin and Bluefin mixed in. The action was full speed and exactly what we were looking for to finish the trip . Funny how things work out.

We took off and left the school with the Excel so they could get a crack at it as well. We are headed up with an exhausted bunch of people and ready to be in a little early tomorrow. Looking at around 730 for an ETA Next trip a 5 day leaves tomorrow.

Aug. 24, 2012

Good evening folks.

After a long day of travel yesterday, today seemed busy. Although the fish today overall were down. We scratched on decent size tuna in the morning and then a little smaller grade in the afternoon. Threw in a few dorado on kelps and picked up an Albacore first thing in the morning. Hopefully the fish are up tomorrow and we can finish strong. 60 tuna 21 dorado and 1 albacore . Some tuna up to 40 pounds.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Aug. 23, 2012

The action was fast and the window of opportunity was small. We had three stops on wahoo where we hooked about 35 fish in all. They are hard to catch. After the smoke settled only 11 were landed. One for the galley also but that doesn't count. There was sign for about an hour and a half and then they were gone. A great experience for some of the guys with plenty of heartbreak losses to go around. Definitely a memorable part of the trip.

Tomorrow we head up and look for kelps. We will be in position for the tuna grounds the day after. The weather is nice and it sounds like the tuna are starting to show. Better grade fish as well. Hopefully are timing is good.

Aug. 21, 2012

Good evening folks.

Spectacular yellowtail fishing today. The ridge pays off with 18 to 30 pound yellows all day long. Everyone is worn out and satisfied after a great day. Tomorrow we will be at the Rocks in hope of a few Wahoo. Sounds like conditions are better and some wahoo moved in . No tuna yet but hopefully some wahoo left for us. We will be in there late morning unless we get stopped by a big kelp with fish on the way.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

Aug. 20, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a very tough day today. We basically caught nothing . a few small tuna and dorado and released small yellows. Our timing was a little off and the fish were spotty. Call it a down day. Hoping tomorrow will be better. One thing our bait does look good, so when things perk up again we will be ready. Not every day is great and this is a perfect example. Glad to get this one out of the way. One thing, we did cover some different water today and got that over with.

We will report again

Good evening folks

The kelp paddy fishing held up for yet another great day. One kelp this morning brought great action on yellow fin, bluefin ,dorado and even 1 albacore. Wow1 an Albacore. It was good to see our old friend in the mix. The Bluefin were the majority on the stop and a few fish up to 35 pounds mixed in For Jack Pot. This afternoon we sealed the Jackpot with a few better grade Yellowfin that looked to be in the 40 pound class. Another great day and a great 3 day trip with epic weather.

Tomorrow we leave on a 7 day trip and we should hit the dock by 7:30 in the morning.

Aug. 17, 2012

Good evening folks. Excellent action today. Smaller grade fish but great action on decent size dorado , yellowfin , Bluefin and yellowtail. And flat calm warm weather to go with.

Another day in the grounds and who knows what to expect. The dorado have come out of nowhere and they really are nice fish. Just more offshore variety.

We did manage a few JackPot fish and maybe tomorrow we will see more of that grade.

Aug. 16, 2012

Good evening folks.

45 miles from the point offered 39 decent size dorado off a couple of kelps. That and the flat calm water made for a nice start of a three day trip. Our bait looks ok and we should be fine. Hopefully we can cure some up for the 7 day trip coming up. First we have to worry about getting fish on this trip.

Hopefully things float tomorrow and we have a nice day.

Good evening folks.

We finished off the trip with a stop on all that nice grade yellowfin. 25 to 45 pound fish. It didn't last long and we did try and milk it for a while. The fish just slowly left us. Nice fish though. Very similar to fish caught at Guadalupe.

Any way a bit slow today on the bigger fish. Hopefully things pick up for the next three day trip. There was sign of smaller fish in the area and hopefully they stay around and we get a shot at those for the next trip.

We will be in tomorrow at about 7:30 AM. see you then Andy Cates

Aug. 14, 2012

Another nice day of fishing yellows. Nice grade but some smaller fish mixed in to throw back. All in all it was a nice day. Very similar to yesterday with good action.

Tomorrow is our last day and we are hoping to finish off with an offshore drift. Things sound a little spotty but still schools for the lucky boat. I hope we are lucky tomorrow.

Andy Cates

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a great day of yellowtail fishing. Lots of rail time and nice size fish. 18 to 30 pound yellows. Nice ridge grade yellows.  So far this morning, similar action. Almost no wind out here and what a nice day to be on the water. All is well

We will report again,

We had a real nice first day wit an overall great grade. 90 Yellowfin from 25 to 45 pounds. A few looking to be in the 50 pound range. Bluefin from 15 to 35 pounds with 50 of those. Most of the Bluefin in the 25 to 30 pound range. Also in the mix dorado on the kelps. Tomorrow we will be offshore again and hoping for another great day. One long drift in the morning and one spot with everyone has one on style fishing. Nice We will report again tomorrow

Today was a great way to end our Seaguar 5-day trip. we had our daily morning bite for 12 BFTs, then had a very long drift through lunch for 118 quality bluefin tuna and a handful of good size dorado. The majority of the Bluefin were the larger 25 to 40 pound tuna. Beautiful grade fish. For a while it was pretty chaotic. For a while we had 4 fish in the bow and at least 4 fish in the stern, with new fish being hooked as others were gaffed aboard. There were a lot of boils and guys screaming hook up and Gaff! Great long range style tuna fishing.

A special thanks to our two hosts Dale Hightower and Jerry Benedicto. Jerry brought some very nice give-a-ways from Seaguar including spectra, flourocarbon, hats and t-shirts. Dale brought a bunch of fishing rods to raffle off thanks to American Spirit and lures from Catchy tackle. ETA @ 7:00 AM Saturday.

Aug. 9, 2012

Another day of scratch offshore fishing. We had a couple of nice bites today, a couple of stops in the morning and a busy stop in the evening. Tomorrow is our last day of fishing so wish us luck.

Aug. 8, 2012

Another tough day of fishing today. We had a good morning bite and nice classic sundowner on nice grade bluefin, but the rest of the day was a bit slow. We managed to scratch out some fish throughout the day including some nice yellowtails off a kelp and some good grade yellowfin off a different kelp. We will be on scene tomorrow hoping for a little more action. The weather came up in the evening so we put the sea anchor out to give us a nice drift for the night. it seems to be settling down a bit, but we will see.

Aug. 7, 2012

The fishing for us today was a bit spotty. We had a couple of good stops for tuna, managing to scrape together 60 yellowfin, most being beautiful 25-40 pound fish, 20 Bluefin and a handful dorado and yellowtail for the day. There was some good sign of fish in the area we are now, so we are hopeful for a busy day tomorrow. The weather is gorgeous this evening and we are hoping that it holds for a little while longer. We are only managed to take a couple of picture today: there is Susan with her yellowfin and crew member Tom Ferrari with an Escolar.

Things were a bit different yesterday. More sign of small bluefin and less sign of those nice yellowfin. The weather was up a little and may have had an impact on things. Although good sign of 12 to 18 pound bluefin. Anyway we had 50 bluefin a few nice yellowfin 15 dorado and a few yellows.

Heading in right now to unload and leave again We will report again tomorrow.

Aug. 5, 2012

Good morning folks. Yesterday we had a very slow morning. A few kelps in the area with just some dorado and a few yellows.

Stopping on various schools for very little or no tuna. Well after lunch we got on a biting school of yellowfin. All that 25 to 45 pound fish. The start was wide open in the corner fishing. The size of the fish come on slow and after the smoke fell we had 35 nice fish on the deck. We continued to pick and put up the kite and had steady bites finishing the drift in the evening with 79 Yellowfin a couple of small Bluefin 15 dorado and 5 yellows. The school was the savior of what was looking like a tough day. You just never know when and how it happens , but when it does , look out.

Our last day today and hopefully we can get on something biting a little earlier.

Aug. 3, 2012

Good evening folks. Some new fish showed up n the grounds and what a great welcome they are. The grade is fabulous. Yellowfin tuna from 30 to 45 pounds. Similar but not quite to what we see at Guadalupe. With exception of the lack of bigger fish. But anyway It looked like almost all the boats down here were in long "plunker" drifts and the spread out sign looks good . Between this and the Bluefin we may see some very good days to come.

We will report again tomorrow

Good evening folks. Another good day of fishing with all the boats getting good action. We had another good day that included an all afternoon drift for Blue fin and yellowfin. The weather was good today and looks to be nice tomorrow.

Make sure you bring some 25 pound test for the long bluefin drifts. The guys with the 25 definitely had the most action on the long drifts..

Tomorrow we are going to spend the day looking for kelps. Yellowtail and dorado would give a great end to the trip

Good evening folks.

We had a great day today with good fishing on both Bluefin in the 25 to 35 pound class and yellowfin from 15 to 25 pounds. Mostly the smaller side on the yellowfin.

Good evening folks.

We decided to do some paddy hopping today, rather than travel down to the tuna grounds for most of the day.

The kelps were spotty, The yellows that come off the kelps are good size though. The dorado were even ok , much better than the yellows and dorado in the tuna grounds. So it worked out ok with 45 yellows and 20 Dorado we were able to keep the guys busy and work out the kinks. Hopefully tomorrow we gat a chance at some tuna and really start the trip.

Good afternoon folks.

A short day with the distance from home. We fished untill noon and wrapped it up. We hit two nice spots of Bluefin. One stop we hand 15 going and the chaos resulted in heavy losses. Another school where we picked up a handful of tuna. Kelp paddies offered just a few fish and really not much to speak of. With the choppy weather it was challenging and as the weather gets better we should see a better caliber of fishing. Very thankful for the great action and variety we had on this trip and ready to do it again tomorrow.

We should be in tomorrow at 8:00 in the morning

Good evening folks.

We had a great day today with a great variety of fish. Schools and kelp paddies brought Bluefin tuna , Yellowfin tuna dorado and a few keeper size yellows. A great arena for a four day fishing trip. With over 120 mixed species of tuna and dorado the action was great. The last stop lasting right up until dark.

Tomorrow we move up and try our hand local and hope for a tuna school or some kelp paddy yellows. Hopefully the weather is ok. It has been choppy all day today. It would be nice to get a little break.

We will report again tomorrow

Good evening folks.

We got a late start today. Not getting in the area until 200 in the afternoon. Ended the day with 93 mixed fish. 40 dorado. 27 Bluefin and 30 yellowfin also 4 tagged yellowtail. The action was there. The Bluefin were the better size fish. up to 30 pounds and the other fish were marginal but still worthy to keep. Almost all the yellows are throw back size and quite a problem to deal with. We did mange a couple decent fish though.

We are hoping for a grey bite in the morning and then string together a couple stops before the afternoon lull. The evening showed promise and we will look forward to that as well.

What a great day of offshore fishing. The Red Rooster drifted from around 6:15 AM until 4:00 PM catching Bluefin tuna. We managed to boat 121 tuna along with a handful of dorado and a lone yellowtail. The action wasn't the crazy wide open fishing associated with albacore fishing, it was the slow steady plunking of classic Bluefin fishing. We had 1-2 fish going all day with flurries for 4-5. The sonar was covered with fish marks all day and the tuna were boiling steady. It was great light tackle tuna fishing. The Red Rooster has one more 4-day trip scheduled before we start a string of 5-day trips. Anybody considering a last minute trip to target tuna should call Christina at the Red Rooster office at (619)224-3857. The boat will be in tomorrow and we leave on our Charkbait 4-day the same day. I've include pictures of Ken and Zack with a Bluefin and a Yellowtail, and a picture of Chapman's delicious sushi spread.

Trying to catch bluefin tuna can be a very frustrating sport. i think that makes it all the more satisfying when you finally hook up with one and get it on the deck. It was typical bluefin fishing today, with a lot of looking around and chumlines. We got into a classic bluefin bite just before dinner time and managed to plunk away at them eventually winding up with 25 nice size tunas for the drift. The weather is coming down steadily so we are hopeful for nice spotting weather tomorrow. I'm including pictures of Chad, George, Nick and Tom with some of the stock grade BFTs. We will be on site again tomorrow for our last day of fishing.

July 20, 2012

The weather came up a little bit today making these bluefin tuna a bit harder to locate. Despite this we still managed to string together a day. Our two youngest anglers, Zack and Steve, on their first multi day trip each caught their first bluefin tuna. Zack even caught one of a handful of nicer size yellowfin tuna we picked up today. We are going to try it again out here tomorrow.

The guys are eager to try some of the offshore fishing for these nice size BFTs. So after a little wrangling at the bait dock we are headed out to try our luck. Oh yeah, the weather is grease calm.

July 18, 2012

Good evening folks. We had another nice day today. A little more wind but didn't seem to bother the fish. Our first stop turned into a 3 hour plunker drift for 80 Bluefin. Nice steady fishing with 7 to 10 fish going all the time. Then in the afternoon we hit a couple more schools for fast action. Ending the day in the afternoon with 115 Blue fin a couple dorado and a couple of yellowtail to finish. il. What a great way to finish. Now we are headed home and turn around on another 4 day tomorrow.

We still have a few spots on the Charkbait 4 day so call the office if you are interested in Blue fin fishing.

See you then

Andy Cates

July 17, 2012

Good evening folks. Another nice day on the offshore grounds. 82 Bluefin today with not much action after 2:00 in the afternoon.  We had that fast action on a couple of schools and one long plunker drift in the mid morning. The grade was the same but less smaller fish . Overall a great day . Bluefin fishing requires a lot of looking and driving around. When you get on them, the action is memorable. Great weather out here and hoping for another good day tomorrow.

July 16, 2012

Good evening folks. We had a nice day of fishing today. Great weather and good action on decent size bluefin tuna. With 96 Bluefin the guys had plenty of chances at a decent fish. Nothing bigger than 30 pounds but nice fish on the light line. We had one morning "plunker drift" that lasted for a couple of hours and then fast hit and go action on schools. The action lasted untill late evening and right into dinner. We are hoping to have similar success tomorrow.

The weather forecast looks good for the next couple of days and our best bet is to stay offshore rather than head into an island for yellowtail. We did get a few nice yellows off a kelp and will gladly welcome more of that in the next two days.

We will report again tomorrow

July 14, 2012

Good afternoon folks.

We never did find the better size Bluefin today. We made a couple of stops on small fish 20 to 30 pound but nothing bigger.

The outlook for our next four day trip looks good. The weather should be good until Thursday and we see enough fish around to make a trip. Yellows are starting to move onto the kelps as well as a little bit of yellowfin moving up. When I say yellows I mean 18 to 25 pounders, not throw backs.

Anyway should be a good run on 4 day trips, we do have a few spots on the next three trips and then it looks about booked up after that. If you want to come out act now before the spots are gone. One of the next four day trips should have spots.

We will see you then.

Andy Cates

This is how Charter master's get things done.

Maybe next year he can have his own scrub brush.

Good Job Coach !

July 13, 2012

Good evening folks.

We started this morning with a show on a little better size fish, 50 to 75 pound Bluefin blowing out around the boat. After the smoke settled we landed a dozen fish and were very happy to have a Jack Pot showcase. Throughout the day we stopped on various schools but few and far between. Definitely scratch fishing ending with a little more than 70 BFT and a few decent size yellowfin to go with.

We got some great pictures of some of the guys and their Bluefin Tuna.

We are going to stay down here and hope to get on a few better size fish in the morning and then head home.

Andy Cates

July 12, 2012

Good evening folks. We had a long day driving around the island looking for bait . We are still here and have caught bait throughout the evening. We are hoping to get what we need and head out offshore.

The weather outlook is good and we should have a chance to finish the trip nicely

Andy Cates

No fish at the Rock's yet. Our efforts were smashed with no sign of tuna and some medium grade yellows shallow. One small ball of tuna showed and we released a 15 pounder. Good conditions with 68 degree and blue water. Any week now we may see fish there, just not yet.

Anyway we are headed up to Cedros to try for bait and then on our way up to finish the trip offshore. Hopefully we can get a chance at a few Bluefin.

Andy Cates

Even with all the exciting action today we still managed to snap one picture. This is Sam's jumbo dorado. His personal best.

July 10, 2012

Good afternoon folks.

We left the grounds after epic offshore Yellowfin fishing. 22 to 30 pound fish absolutely wide open. Bread and butter we call them and what a great day it was. There were fish up to 40 pounds but not many just a few, but the bulk of the fish are 25 to 30 pounds. Classic ridge grade fish.

After yesterday with the yellows and now the school size fish, we are in the market for a few Jack Pot fish. Alijos Rocks sounds like the most practical move and nobody has been there in a while so, why not? We will be there first thing in the morning and see if some fish have moved in there as well.

Great weather and great fishing . Nice!

No pictures today, we were way to busy

Andy Cates

July 9, 2012

Good evening folks

Classic yellowtail fishing today. Very nice grade 18 to 30 pound fish with a few bigger to dazzle the guys. We had a little sign of tuna this morning and we are going to start first thing in the morning offshore in this 71 degree water down here.

The weather is great and we will take advantage of it tomorrow.

We put up a few pictures of the yellows and one that Frank got looks to be over 50 pounds, Nice fish! We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

July 9, 2012

Good morning folks.

Not much to report just yet. Windy conditions brought very little sign of tuna yesterday. It looks like it may be windy up that way again today. We decided to head down and try our luck at yellows while the wind is up. We won't be there until lunch but hopefully it pays off on arrival. The weather is really nice down here. We are happy about that. Great looking conditions for the way down.

We will report again later

Andy Cates

July 8, 2012

Good morning folks.

We left on Coach's 8 day yesterday and heading down this morning. The weather is up but not bad .

Hopefully our bait cures up today , it doesn't look good right now. We might be able to clean it up by the end of the day. Hopefully find something to use it on.

July 5, 2012

The morning started out kinda slow. But once things got going it was same as the day before. We also were lucky enough to bump into another school of the bigger ones, but this time they weren't so eager to bite like they did before. Still we were able to hook some on lighter line, which gave the fish a greater chance of escaping. After some epic battles on the lighter line, a few got away but we were able to put three of beauties on the boat. With steady action till sundown we wrapped it up down this way and will be headed up tonight to look at a different area for tomorrow. We will be focusing on trying to find some more trophy bluefins. The weather has been flat calm the last three days, and it should be tomorrow as well. If you haven't booked yourself on one of our trips, now is the time to do so. It is going to be a great fishing year.

July 4, 2012

Happy fourth to everybody. Today our fireworks began with a nice school of biting bluefin. When that school wasn't biting any longer we were able to find another. We were able to stay busy all day long with biting fish. The real fireworks were around lunchtime. We pulled up to a small breezer of fish and it was the better grade fish 60 to 85 pounds. They came to the boat chewing on whatever we threw at them. It looked like everybody had one on, at least for a little while. The hooked tuna did what they do best, which is fight like heck to get away, and a fair number of them succeeded. But when we were done with that stop, we had ten of those beautiful fish on the deck. Needless to say we are going to be in this area tomorrow, and we are looking forward to another fantastic day of fishing.

July 3, 2012

We made our way up into the tuna area just after lunch. Good life around, birds, whales, porpoise and good sign of bait. We hooked a couple of yellowfin on the troll, and started hooking fish on the bait. The baitfish turned out to be bluefin, and they got on us pretty good. The fish settled in under us, and we drifted with them till dark , always keeping a couple going. Everybody had more than a couple opportunities. It turned out to be a really fun day of fishing. The weather is fantastic so we are staying for the night to see what this area looks like in the morning.

July 2, 2012

When we last reported, we were catching yellows in the dark. As the sky began to lighten up, there was still a few anglers on the deck pulling on fish. By second call for breakfast almost everybody was in the stern pulling on a fish. We had good action till about mid-morning then decided to pull anchor and start heading up. The weatherman said the wind is going to be coming down all day on the tuna area so we are heading up to fish tuna for the remainder of the trip. We should be up in the zone early afternoon tomorrow. Hope the weatherman is right-on with his prediction.

July 1, 2012

Started the morning still traveling to one of the area of high spots along the coast where there had been good sign of yellow. When we got there it was about mid-morning, and to our disappointment the water had rolled, it was cold and green. We decided to keep heading south to the ridge. Trolled all day for a couple dorado and a few small yellowfin. We arrived after dinner in the dark, saw good sign of fish, kicked it over and gave it try. Good grade yellows bit late into the night and into the morning. We are going to stay put and see what the daylight will bring. We are hoping that tomorrow will be as much fun as tonight was. We'll let you know then.

June 30, 2012

The wind came up during the night, which made conditions a little tough. We started trolling at light and were lucky enough run across a few nice schools of tuna. We made the best of our opportunities, and it seemed everybody had a chance at landing a nice bluefin. We gave it till about noon and decided to keep heading south. We will be looking to catch some yellows tomorrow, hopefully in some nice weather. We'll check in later and let you know, wish us luck.

June 29, 2012

We cleared the point around one-thirty this afternoon with twenty-eight anglers on board. This trip is the tuna & tails open 8 day, so we are going to be hunting for some tuna in the morning. The weather is nice and it sounds like it should be good tomorrow. A special thanks to Pelagic, Tiburon Engineering, Ballyhood Top Gun Lures, Anglers Center for sending out a bunch of goodies for everyone on board. We'll check in tomorrow to let you all know how we did, see you then.

Good morning folks. Rough weather kept us inshore the past couple of days. We have had good fishing at the Island but no chance at the offshore scene. We made the most of it with a great morning on yellows. 15 to 25 pound fish. The wind stayed down untill we were finished with yellows. We loaded up the skiffs and spent the rest of the day in hot, flat calm water. Here are some pictures of the smiles in the sunshine. It really was a nice day.

The weather today is cold rough and windy. It has been this way for three days. I hope it gets better for the guys that are out now. We will be in around 9:00 in the morning. Running a little late with the weather

June 18, 2012

Good evening folks. Tough day and windy weather on the Bluefin grounds. Only one school seen between the 4 of us. Unfortunately it was not us. We struggled through the day and decided to head back to the Island. We will be there in the morning and run skiff trips tomorrow all day. We do the skiff trips on this trip every year and the bad weather is giving us an opportunity to do it tomorrow.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

June 17, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had a nice day of yellowtail fishing at Cedros. With all the yellow that the guys are interested in we are heading out offshore for the next three days. Fishing sounds spotty but Bluefin fishing seems to always be that way. Hopeful we get lucky tomorrow and give the guys a chance at a few tuna. Our first day and a half of it was not that great. So now hoping that our luck has changed . It's always easier when you have fish aboard.

Anyway we will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

June 16, 2012

Good evening folks.

After a day of frustrating tuna fishing, we went down the beach trying to get the yellowtail fishing done. The day started with a nice kelp and good grade yellows. The shallows brought nothing , no yellows. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking for kelps. We had one more kelp that brought us up to 125 yellows and we thought we were on a roll. The kelps that we found had all small release yellows. Not another good kelp the rest of the day.

We will be up at Cedros tomorrow. Hopefully we can put together another day on yellows and be in position for tuna the next day. The Tuna fishing is very spotty and hopefully gets straightened out by the time we get up there for our last three days.

Andy Cates

June 14, 2012

Good evening folks. We traveled most of the day with a seminar on tackle this morning. We made one stop where we had a dozen Bluefin about 25 pounders and then continued to look around the rest of the day. The water structure is the same but no fish late. We put out the sea anchor and settled in for the night. We will try the offshore thing again tomorrow in hopes of some tuna.

With the better weather we are hoping for fish tomorrow.

Andy Cates

June 13, 2012

Good afternoon folks.

We arrived at Cedros this morning. It was a joy to get out of the weather. We started running skiff trips. The calico action has been fair. We are limited to an area because of the wind. The whole south end is a little windy for skiff fishing. The weather is nice sunny and warm. We are going to stay the night and then leave for home in the morning. I will post some pictures tonight of some of the skiff shots.

Andy Cates

June 4, 2012

Good Morning folks.

We are just about ready to head up the line. A couple more hours and then break down the gear. It looks like we may have some weather on the way. We are going to try to get up to Cedros and spend a day in the skiffs.

This morning we hooked one fish and landed this brute. Tom Jackson was the lucky angler with an estimated 350 pounder. It was nice to be here to experience one of the best days of his life. Talk about pumped. Congratulations Tom.

June 3, 2012

Good Morning Folks.

Well, our Jack Pots got settled early with a 290 caught by Laurens Rhinelander, a 245 by Darren Lowrey and Mike Berkman with a 228 . Pictures shown here. We will continue to fish with very nice weather and plenty of time to do it. We still have room for a couple more trophies.

Andy Cates

June 2, 2012

Good evening folks.

We had another great hit this morning. Mike Butler managed this 216 and that earned him an Accurate rod for wahoo fishing. The morning bite was on and totaled 40 fish that we kept. We did release a few and we are about at capacity. We took off from the Bank at 900 in the morning and headed in to the Island in hopes of a few Jack Pot fish. We will have an early arrival.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

June 1, 2012

Good evening folks. Another great day, starting at 330 in the morning. The accurate reel and Cal Star rod were up for the biggest fish today. Bob Michner technically won the prize with a 233 but passed it off to Thad Peach for his 195. Bob stoked just to have gotten number 52 on fish over 200 pounds. That was on the Iron. Any way a great day with nice grade of fish. We are having great fishing and the weather is nice. 65 tuna today most fish from 120 to 190 pounds. Another day like that and we may head in and check the Island for Jack Pot's. We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

May 31, 2012

Good evening folks. Things started at 4:00 in this morning. We had steady fishing in the dark and then explosive fishing right at sunrise. The pick on the kite lasted untill lunch. After that things slowed down for us. Only a few fishin the evening right now. Biggest fish today was a 209 caught by Mike Berkman and a 218 caught by Bill Walsh. Not there biggest but nice fish . The fish today were mostly from 120 pounds to 190 pounds. Really nice grade. We had 57 tuna and 12 wahoo for the day.

The weather has been nice and looking to get calm tomorrow. We will report then

Andy Cates

May 30, 2012

Good evening folks. The Accurate group had a decent afternoon to get the trip started. 34 tuna and 4 wahoo from lunch time untill dark. Biggest fish around 198 and 196 pounds. All in all nice fish. 100 to 170 was the bulk of the fish. Tonight we will try and get some flying fish. We did have bites with the squid but our surplus will run low fast. Flyers would be great.

Hopefully we can scratch again tomorrow and maybe get a chance at a few bigger fish.

We will report then

Andy Cates

May 28, 2012

Good evening folks.

A nice day today. We went by Alijos Rocks around lunch time and now heading down in warm sunny weather.

We did a tuna seminar today and that gave us something to do to eat up the rest of the day. A quick stop tonight for squid and then on the rode again. Right now we are headed to the Bank. Unless Justin comes on tomorrow with the 911 to head to the Island. We should probably split up and check both spots just to get a look. We will do a wahoo seminar tomorrow and then be at the bank the next morning.

We will report again tomorrow

Andy Cates

May 27, 2012

Good morning folks. After two months of maintenance it is nice to be back out.

This is the June Heat Accurate reels trip. We have mostly returning guys but a couple of new people that got on after a last minute cancellation.

We did our opening seminar and went over safety and a few things . Today we are getting the boat gear rigged and ready to go.

The weather is cold and windy. It will be nice to get down into the warmer water.

March 22, 2012

Good morning folks. Yesterday was our last day of fishing. What a classic day at the Bank. A couple of cows in the morning , wahoo fishing until the afternoon and nice tuna fishing until dark with another cow added in. We finished it off and now have great weather going up the line.

It looks like 18 to 20 fish over 200, plenty of wahoo and plenty of decent size tuna . Really a nice trip. Plenty of room to move around. With only one other boat around we pretty much had the run of the place. That's the beauty of winter long trips.

Less boats. Wahoo and big tuna.

I posted some more pictures of the guys. Dan Pope got this 228 on a squid on the kite. Nice weather in the background. Got to love it!

Andy Cates

March 21, 2012

Good morning folks.

Yesterday we scratched almost all day. Starting in the morning with a 236 and a 209. Allan Babashof pulled in a 240 late morning on the kite and Larry Martin with an evening 213. Also on the kite. We had other nice fish up to 190 pounds with enough to keep guys at the rail all day.

So far this morning Pete Fallini landed a 210 using a live Skip Jack and Dan Pope with a nice fish about 190 pounds. We are going to be here untill dark and then take off for home. We are not expecting a great ride home. We are too far from home to leave tomorrow morning. We will stay on schedule as long as the weather permits.

We will report again tonight.

Andy Cates

March 20, 2012

Good morning folks.

We scratched yesterday and ended up with around 20 decent fish. One fish bigger 226 caught by Butch Oldenkamp. All in all the day worked out . We were hoping for a little better action, but isn't that always the case.

This morning we were in position for the gray bite and landed a 236 and a 219 . Also a fish real close to the mark a 198 caught by Pete Fallini. Rich Galamore picked up the 236 and Irish Kane the 219. Irish on a Skip Jack, Rich on a flyer.

Pete also on a Skip Jack. A dozen other mixed fish for the morning and now we sit .Conditions are funky right now . we are hoping the afternoon brings in some more bites.

Andy Cates

March 18, 2012

Good evening folks. The grade on the fish got smaller. With only a few decent fish, biggest being 150 pounds. We took off. With the report from the Bank we decided to go out and join the Royal Polaris and see if we can get in on some of the action.

The ride out is nice and will be on scene at 9:00 in the morning. It gives us a full day and the best fishing is in the evening anyway.

We will report again tomorrow.

Andy Cates

March 17, 2012

Good evening folks

We missed on the morning shot today. We had no current all morning untill about 2:00 in the afternoon. We started hooking fish and lasted until dark. Only one stand out fish right at 200 pounds. Most fish were 60 to 90 pounds with about 8 fish 90 to 120 pounds. We are hoping for the better grade to hit us tomorrow morning. Each day has been different and a lot depending on the current. When we have the good westerly current the fish show. The bigger fish are unpredictable and we get bites at various times.

Hoping to get started early tomorrow

Andy Cates

March 16, 2012

Good morning folks.

Yesterday was a nice surprise with a kick off of big fish. We ended the day with 8 fish from 209 to 266. 44 tuna total . Half of which are that smaller grade. Although 8 cows is a nice way to start. Bob Michiner had a celebrating moment with his 50th fish over 200 pounds on the Red Rooster 3. He was pretty stoked. Butch Oldenkamp.  Had the toad of the day at 266. Tom Jackson with a 215, Rich Gillmore with a 217, Irish Kane with his first over 200, a 209.Charles Tanaka with a 216. Philip Lisi with a 229, Phil Gary 214. Really a nice first day of fishing.

So far today only a few fish. Jim Ballard hit in big this morning with a 277.

As we sit here and wait you get the feeling that your next bite may be a big one. We have had bites on sardine, squid and the mackerel for big fish.

The weather is fine. Kind of like last trip. Just windy enough to kind of irritate a person . And rolling around. None the less we are happy to be here and have an opportunity to fish these water's.

We will report again tomorrow

March 14, 2012

Good evening folks.

Well, we finished all our seminars and giveaway's. Now we are ready to try for fish.

We will be on the grounds first thing in the morning. Starting to get a little breeze down here. Not bad though pretty nice weather all the way down Hopefully we have an encouraging report tomorrow. Hopefully we can report. It's up to the satellites

March 13, 2012

Good morning folks. Not much to report. Nice weather so far and making good speed down the coast. A seminar this morning and a raffle to make the time go by. The day will be spent rigging up the tuna gear. Lot's of action at the tackle table.

Larry brought out an electric smoker machine. Yesterday we made smoked Salmon and today smoked Tuna. The Salmon was incredible. I had no idea how good fresh smoked fish is. Now we know. What a treat. We will continue the smoking process the next couple of days. It really is fun trying to get it right.

The whole boat has that smoked fish smell. The whole outside of the boat , not the inside.

Another day of travel and another seminar tomorrow.

March 11, 2012

Good evening folks. We just left and heading down on a 15 day ride home long range trip. The day went smooth with a nice load of bait and now calm seas. Nice to be back out after the hustle bustle of the Fred Hall show. It was nice to see everyone at the show. Thanks for the support at the Red Rooster booth. Tom Reynold's was a big help with a lot of his time helping out. Not to mention the rest of the guys . Thanks again Hopefully our satellite situation will allow us to stay posted . It has been an issue lately. Solar Flares? Really?

Anyway we are on our way

Andy Cates

Larry Brown and David Choate were chartermasters on the Red Rooster III trip that arrived February 26 at H&M Landing after 16 days in the southern zone, fishing for giant yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Fishing was good, better than the breeze and seas, said anglers, and a baker’s dozen tuna over 200 pounds, or cows, were caught along with all the fish they wanted. Brown had three for himself, at 200, 209 and 220.4 pounds.

Andy Cates skippered the trip. He said he had 24 anglers who fished hard in water holding at 75 degrees. He also noted the approach of spring in the islands.

“We had an awesome show on jumping humpback whales,” he remarked to dock reporter Bill Roecker.

Valene Garrison fished with her hubby John Whitley. The couple are from Half Moon Bay. Valene’s weighed 257.2 pounds and won first place. She said it fought for 35 minutes and took her around the boat twice. It was her second cow and best fish ever.

A salami mackerel on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook proved fatal to the tuna, and she pulled it in with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra backing on an Accurate ATD 50 topless reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

John Dixon of Redondo Beach roped a 237 and a 232-pound tuna, his first cows ever. He said they came on mackerel baited on 9/0 7691 hooks on 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Tuffline spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Phenix 3X seven-foot rod. They bigger one won second place and came aboard in 35 minutes, said Dixon.

Martin “Papa” Gomez of El Monte won third place for his 227.4-pounder. His 14-year-old daughter Monica was there to see it all. She said she was surprised to see that tuna had red blood and not blue, as she has assumed was common to all fish. Gomez got his winner with a salami on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook. He used 130-pound pink Yo-Zuri leader, 130-pound blue Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 7465 H rod

Greg Winfree had to fly home early, and wasn’t at the dock, but he caught three cows: 205, 209 and 209 pounds.

Chris Minnick of Pasadena took a 208.6 and a 199.4-pound tuna. He said he used mackerel on a 10/0 Gamakatsu hook on 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra, with an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a super Seeker 2 x 4 rod. Chris said his fish came to the boat in 15 minutes.

Ben Kita of LA has numerous 300-pound tuna to his credit, all on the Rooster. On this trip he produced a 206.4-pounder, it was discovered at the end of the weigh-in.

ETA @ 8:30 AM SUNDAY

We are still heading north enjoying the great weather here outside the ridge. There are lots of jumbo kelps with sigh of yellowtail on them. Most of the fish are small but we did drive by a couple of kelps with better size fish. It was too much to resist so we stopped on one kelp and threw a 7x at it, but didn't get any bites. We put the blinders back on and are on once again on course. Everybody is enjoying the sunshine and flat seas, hopefully it holds up another day or two.

I'm including a couple of bonus pictures taken by Larry Brown of one of John Dixon's big fish and one of the stock grade fish that Richard muscled up.

We have just left Cabo San Lucas on route to San Diego. We dropped off half of our passengers who wanted take advantage of the fly home option on this 16/13 trip. Weather reports look positive for the weekend and we are hopeful for a smooth ride home. An ETA will be posted when the boat gets closer to San Diego. Rolling up.

Feb. 22, 2012

Good morning folks. We finally have reception and are able to send E-mail's. The Trip went well and now we are on our way to Cabo. The weather is nice and so far so good.

We spent the trip at the Island . We found fish from 60 pounds up to 236 pounds. The bigger fish came in the morning right at daylight. We managed to hook one to three nice size fish each morning. The afternoon found mostly the smaller grade of tuna being 60 to 100 pounds. We had three days in which the squid on the kite brought fish over 100 pounds and up to 220 pounds.

Conditions changed and moved us up the Island for similar fishing with the Bigger fish once again in the morning . As the trip went on the sign of fish got better we picked at decent size fish untill the end. An estimate of 12 fish at or over 200 pounds and quite a few nice fish in the mid to high hundreds.

It was a trip in which you had to be in the water when the big fish swam by. If you casted out after they were hooked or caught you were too late.

I am going to send some pictures of the people that got lucky and hooked and landed some of the nicer size tuna.

I want to thank Larry Brown and David Choate for there help in putting the trip together.

We hope to see you all again next year

Rooster Rallies 19

John Grabowski docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing February 3 after the 15-day Bluefin Jim & Pelagic charter with 19 anglers. Sonny Jones chartermastered the Pelagic side of the trip, which produced 18 tuna over 200 pounds. One of those was just a meal away from 300 pounds. About 100 wahoo were also caught, mostly while tuna fishing.

“They bit from three AM until dark just about every day,” remarked Sonny. “At night we used heavy gear.”

The star of the trip was second-time long ranger Scott Harper of Camarillo, who caught the winner, a 293.6-pounder, on a double squid bait on Mustad 20/0 circle hooks under the kite with the boat’s kite rig. That rig uses 130-pound Izorline, an Accurate ATD 80 reel (they call it “The Tractor” aboard), and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

“My best fish before this trip was a 160-pounder,” Scott told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “I got him in 15 minutes on that rig. It was a pleasure to fish with the legend John Grabowski.”

Scott also caught two other cows, at 270 and 252 pounds. With that pair he used another outfit: a salami mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook, 130-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 6455 XXXH rod.

Bill House of Rogersville AL won second place for a 274-pound tuna, and he also had fish of 230 and 217 pounds. He fished mackerel on 10/0 Mustad 7691 hooks tied to 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, an Avet 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. He got the big one in 50 minutes.

Jack Thrush of Millbrae won third place for his 254.9-pound yellowfin, and also had tuna of 211 and 202 pounds. He said he got the big one in 40 minutes, and fished sardines on a 5/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod.

Sonny Jones of Santa Ana bagged a nice 240-pound tuna after taking a skiff ride to catch the fish, which came up tail-snagged and dead after a mile and a half chase. Sonny pinned a mackerel on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Momoi and 130-pound Line One spectra backing on a Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar Baby Boomer rod.

Hector Lopez of San Diego caught a 229-pound tuna with a salami on the kite. The big bait was on a 10/0 7691 hook, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 50 reel treated by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Mike Berkman of LA bagged a 215 in 15 minutes. He baited a salami on a 10/0 7691 hook, and used 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Talica 50 reel and a Super Seeker 1 X 3 rod.

David Malmberg of Leucadia picked off a 212-pounder with a mackerel on a 10/0 7691 hook and 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 7455 XXH rod.

Ray Broders of Pt. Townsend, WA pulled in a 211 and a 209-pounder. He fished with sardines on ringed 5/0 Owner Super Mutu hooks. He used 100-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Cal Sheets-treated Penn 50 reel and a rod he described as “…a generic six-footer.”

Bill Campbell of Placentia spent a sweaty half-hour getting his 206.6-pound tuna on a sardine pinned to a 5/0 Owner Gorilla hook. He fished with 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.

Paul Lepore of Dana Point whacked a 204-pound tuna with a salami on a 10/0 7691 hook.

“It was a 30-second fish,” he said. He used 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 (Paul’s an Accurate pro-staffer) and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod wrapped by Fisherman‘s Supply of Lawndale.

Robbie Thill of Anaheim rounded up the cow catchers with a 202-pound yellowfin, the last one weighed. He said it bit a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 100-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 100-pound Power Pro spectra. He fished with a Penn VSX 30 reel and a Super Seeker 1 X 3 rod.

“My best fish before this one was a 30-pound albacore,” he said.

The trolling jackpot was won by Bob Michener of Oxnard, for a 56.4-pound wahoo.

Last leg of our journey as we travel up from just below Ensenada in very nice weather, it's cold up here compared to where we are coming from in the tropics. The crew of the Red Rooster III would like to express our sincere gratitude to Bluefin Jim Cassy and Sonny Jones of Pelagic fish gear for all the great raffle and giveaway's this trip, it is never expected but much appreciated. We would like to also thank all of the wonderful passengers this trip that made the entire trip a pleasure to work. We will see everyone coming down to the unloading tomorrow early in the AM. Good night and thanks for following the reports from aboard the Red Rooster III.

John G. and the Crew of the Red Rooster III

Feb. 2, 2012

We had beautiful traveling weather the first two days coming from the grounds to Cedros Island. We spent the entire day at the Island yesterday for some action on small grade yellowtail which we released and a hand full of good grade yellowtail which we tagged and put on top of our existing catch. After breaking down the remaining tackle and having dinner in the flat calm lee of the Island we started the last leg of our trip home. We will be tying up at Lee Palm Sportfishing at 7:00 A.M. and Begin taking the tackle and personal gear off the boat, we should start unloading our catch at approximately 7:30 AM. Lee Palm's office will be open between 7:30 -8:00 AM tomorrow if you need to contact them for any reason.

A couple of picture's I'm sending along today are of two terminal gear products that work very well for us during the trip. One is a set of three Captain Jimmy's wahoo bombs that fished well, produced good fish and held up to the test of wahoo fishing. Owner and designer Jim Kokesh was on board this trip and caught a very nice limit of wahoo fishing these bombs.

The other picture is the NEW Mustad Demon Perfect Circle Offset 4X Strong hooks ( 39943BLN). Prior to this trip Captain Andy Cates told me the Red Rooster III had found "The Right Hook" for fishing giant Yellowfin Tuna with live bait, it is the Mustad 6/0 ringed 4X strong Demon circle hook, he went on to describe how perfect the hook was for hooking the live bait with out killing it and that he has seen zero failures with the hook. We fished the 6/0 ringed 4X Strong with the 100 and 130 pound test all trip and saw those exact same results. WE also made our double sardine kite leaders with the 7/0 and 8/0 4X strong non ringed hooks and they worked to perfection on "The Big Gear." WE did not do much helium balloon fishing this trip but the same 7/0 and 8/0 size 4X strong will be the go to hook for the 150 pound application under the balloons. Mustad nailed it when they designed this hook for our live bait fishing application for Big Fish.

Jan. 30, 2012

We spent yesterday's morning bite cutting off everything we hooked looking for two more good ones that we could fit in our last fish hold, Hector Lopez and Bob Michener had the best two fish and that's the ones we took to finish off the tuna portion of our trip. I must mention and highly commend the sportsmanship of Bill House, he cut off a 230 pound fish yesterday morning due to the fact he already had two good ones in the hold, leaving room for someone else to have the opportunity to put a duce or better aboard. We spent the rest of the day targeting a few more wahoo and at dark started heading up the line to take advantage of a weather window right now that is just perfect. Flat calm seas traveling north this morning makes our decision to leave the grounds seem to be a good one. We have some time and are gearing up to fish Cedros Island on the way home for a few yellowtail to fill in the cracks between the catch on board. We will continue to report our days activities and results as we work our way back to San Diego.

The pictures today are of Hector Lopez and a beautiful 237 pound Yellowfin he captured while Kite fishing yesterday morning just after daylight, congratulations Hector. Also I have been saving a couple of pictures for the ride home of Ray Borders. Ray spent most of the daylight hours each day fishing with his Accurate 50 size spinning reel matched to a Calstar spinning rod designed I believe specifically for this high quality spinning reel. Ray had the reel filled with spectra and used a top shot of 100 fluorocarbon line, he had some epic 1-2 hour battles on tough 90-150 pound Yellowfin tuna and the gear held up flawlessly. All of us on board where highly impressed with the amount of pressure Ray could put on the fish and the tackle without a failure. Ray is 6' 6" tall and has been an Alaskan commercial fisherman his entire life and fishes extremely well, he truly put that Accurate spinning reel and Calstar rod to the test.

Jan. 29, 2012

Every day during the daylight hours has had one consistency, that no two days have been the same as far as fish sign or fishing conditions. The nights have been our most valued time of the day by far, up until yesterday afternoon. Extremely good sign on Vacca all day with good steady fishing current and a legitimate shot for a "Good One" basiclly all day long. We made the most of the golden opportunity with an epic afternoon of Vacca fishing by hooking and landing a 298, 285,277, 243,222, 211 and a 207. This along with very good fishing for 120-180 pound fish and excellent light wire bait fishing for wahoo made for a day that no one aboard will forget any time soon. We are getting very close and have room for maybe two more good ones in our fish storage tanks, along with a little more skin to fill in the cracks. We are waiting to see what today has to offers as I type this report, obviously in great anticipation at another shot at a good one or two.

The pictures today are of Mike Burkman with a mid day 243 kite fish. Scott Harper and the Red Rooster III crew with Scott's 298 at Sundown flying a squid under the kite. Jack Thrush and the crew with a 285 from the kite in the afternoon. Long time Red Rooster III passenger Dave Malmberg and a 222 pound Kite fish. Last but not least is Daniel Bliss with his first Solo light wire finesse wahoo, I must say Daniel was elated to master the art of light wire fishing for wahoo.

Jan. 28, 2012

It is Saturday morning and to be quite honest I'm not sure where I left off on the updates from the last report, the days are starting to blend together. We continue to have excellent fishing and fantastic weather as you can see by the pictures we have sent along with today's report. We still have three day's of fishing and we are trying to be very selective on what is being put in the last hold, looking for more "GOOD ONES".

Our picture's today are of Bob Brower of Hixson Tennessee pulling on one of his better fish from yesterday (note the weather:). Mike Butler with a mid day 180 pound kite fish. Jack Thrush with a 207 pound fish right at daylight and Ray Broders with one of his two 200 pounders in the last twenty four hours, along with a few more fish waiting for a ride back to San Diego. We will continue to report on our progress as all of us aboard the Red Rooster III enjoy this great fishing and weather.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 27, 2012

We had a very good day of quality Yellowfin Tuna fishing today with a good shot of cows to go along with the 100-190 pound grade we have been catching. We have sent along a few photos of part of the mornings big fish. Bill House and his 225 and 277, Scott Harper with a 270 and Sonny Jones and a 220 he caught after taking a ride in the skiff. Mike Burkman not shown also had a 220. Very good weather, actually at times yesterday the weather was to good as we struggled to keep the kites up and fly with the big baits. Things are coming along very nicely, everyone is having a wonderful fishing experience and we are praying that this great trophy Yellowfin Tuna fishing holds for the remainder of our time down here on the grounds. We will report back with more updates tomorrow.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 26, 2012

Another very good day of Yellowfin Tuna fishing today along with a few Wahoo to keep everyone on their toes. We have sent along a photo of Red Rooster III regular Bob Michener and crew member Nick from today's action. The 15-18 knots of wind we have had the past two days has backed off to a light 8-10 knots and we are enjoying beautiful weather and excellent fishing conditions. We have a lot of fishing time remaining and we are all hoping for continued success as the trip progresses. It appears everyone is having a great time as we work at making this a trip to remember. We will report back later and keep you up to date on our progress as things develop.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 25, 2012

We are starting our third day of fishing this morning, the fishing to this point has been very good on the mid range 90-190 pound Yellowfin Tuna. Our Largest Yellowfin Tuna SO FAR is 247 pounds caught by Scott Harper, he was baiting a large mackerel at the time he hooked the fish. I would say their is a very good chance at a trophy Yellowfin Tuna right now if conditions continue to stay as they are, we have a very nice start to the trip and will continue to keep you updated. Our weather has been a bit breezy but very comfortable fishing conditions. WE will report as the satallite service allows.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 24, 2012

Good fishing today on mid range fish for us, basically 70 to 130 pound fish made up the bulk of our catch today. Bill Cambell had the largest Yellowfin of the day for us and it was approximately 185 pounds. Great day, very nice start to the trip. Our weather was perfect kite flying weather today, which was very successful for us in the afternoon. WE will be around here in the morning and are hoping for similar good luck with a few shots at the bigger fish. WE have sent along a few photos today of Art Cabllero with a nice Wahoo and Paul Lapore with one of his Mid range tuna.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan. 23, 2012

Still rolling down in very nice traveling weather at dark this afternoon, 5-10 knots NW wind and very little seas. We moved our bait around to make room for fish tomorrow and it appears we have a very nice load of sardines, everything is living extremely well at this time. We will be arriving tomorrow morning to our first destination hoping to get the trip started, we will report back with updates daily provided we continue to have satellite phone service on the fishing grounds.

We have included a few pictures of the final tackle preparations around the boat before we arrive on the grounds.

Crew of the Red Rooster III

Jan 21, 2012

We are still headed south in 15-18 knots of wind but very little sea state. It has been a nice ride down to this point, the weather and water temperature are beginning to warm as we travel south. We have spent two hours each day having seminars preparing for the fishing Adventure a head, tomorrow will be the final of four seminars and will include wahoo fishing along with the final instructions on skiff fishing, deploying of the back up rods and general safety around the deck while engaged in fishing. The group and crew have been working diligently for the past two and a half days preparing for what battles may lay a head, we are ALL extremely excited to start the fishing part of the trip the day after tomorrow.

Bluefin Jim and Sonny Jones our charter masters from Longfin Tackle store and Pelagic Fish Gear had a wonderful raffle this morning and EVERYONE was winner. The grand prize winners were Art Coballero who won a Shimano Talica 20 reel, Bill House who won a Shimano Tere rod and Mike Butler who won a custom wrapped Calstar 770 XXH rod. We would truly like to thank the Manufactures of these great products that made this special event possible. A very special thanks to Mark Mills at Shimano Reels. Additional thanks to Calstar rods, Lead Masters Wahoo Bombs, Salas jigs, Z-Man flyers, Sato Crimps, Pelagic Wear, Accurate Reels, Lake Irvine, Longfin tackle, Izorline, and Mustad Hook Products. We hope to put all this wonderful gear to good use!

We will try to report daily.

John G. and the RR3 crew

Jan. 19, 2012

We are headed south on our Bluefin Jim/Pelagic 15 day trip. We put a nice load of sardines on the boat and managed to clear the point a little early. Headed down, we will report daily as long as we have satellite reception. Wish us luck.

SAN DIEGO — For the first time this winter long range season it wasn’t Clarion’s Buffer Zone that was the place to be, but rather it was the Hurricane Bank that produced great action for the last round of trips.

The Red Rooster III returned from its Loftus/Martin 14-day trip right as WON was going to press Monday morning. WON caught up with skipper Andy Cates Monday morning to get the scoop on how the trip played out and what was getting bit.

“We started out at the island, and the conditions were hideous,” said Cates of the water set-up in the buffer zone. It made the decision to bust out to the Hurricane Bank an easy one. But the fishing — which went on to be Richter — was far from east right out of the gates.

“Roy (Rose on the Royal Polaris) and I anchored up on corners of the bank. The water was green and after 6 hours we both had two 40 pounders (tuna). I was just about to take off, then we hooked one and then we had 10 going,” said Cates. The next move would have been Puerto Vallarta, but instead they sat on the bank for 4 days and filled the boat with 120 to 200-pound yellowfin to go with good action on wahoo before heading into Clarion to get two jackpot fish.

From  4 p.m. to 6 p.m. the anglers on the Rooster went from having two small fish to having 45 yellowfin to 180 pounds on the deck. Cates said they went back into Clarion to try and get shots at bigger fish for the jackpot, and the moved worked out, with Tom Keller getting a 274.8 on the kite that went on to get first in the jackpot. A 244.6 for Butch Oldenkamp on an Accurate ATD 12 caught outside Clarion took second.

While on the surface filling the boat might make it look like there was no hot gear or rig, Cates said that the anchor fishing with live sardines was the type of stuff that screamed small reel and short topshot.

“That 12-sized reel like the Accurate ATD 12 or a 20-sized reel was what the guys that were really doing good were using,” said Cates. “It was sardine fishing, so you had to be able to cast.”

Still, the kite fishing was really dynamic, with most of the bites coming on the fly out.

Dock reporter Bill Roecker added that Gary Grimaud scored a 210-pound yellowfin (the third biggest of the trip’s five cows) at the Hurricane to finish up the jackpots.

Roecker also added that the long range fleet was on it’s way up behind the Red Rooster III, and that each day this week will have another long range boat coming home. Everyone that ran out to the bank loaded up like the Rooster did.

SMALL REEL, BIG FISH — An Accurate ATD 12 helped Butch Oldenkamp flyline up this 244.6-pound yellowfin tuna on the Red Rooster III’s 14-day Loftus/Martin trip.

Spectacular ‘Cane Fishing

Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing after a 14-day trip with 18 anglers, the annual Loftus & Martin expedition. “We had spectacular fishing at the Hurricane Bank,” remarked Cates, “with plenty of opportunities at wahoo.”

The trip’s tusker was a 274.8-pound yellowfin taken by Tom Kelleher of Corona del Mar. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker it was his best-ever tuna, though he’d had a 243-pounder six years ago. He said he baited a mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook, and used the boat’s kite 130-pound pound kite outfit, with a Penn 80 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXH rod. The big tuna fought for an hour.

Butch Oldenkamp of Bakersfield won second place for a 244.6-pounder. It bit a sardine on a 12/0 Mustad circle hook tied to 130-pound Maxima fluorocarbon leader, 130-pound Line One spectra, an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 7455 XH rod.

Gary Grimaud of Ocean Beach won third place for a 210-pound tuna. He said it bit on a sardine and an 11/0 Mustad 7691 hook. He fished with 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Power Pro spectra on a Penn 80 W reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXHG rod “It took a half-hour,” he remarked. “It’s my fifth cow.”

Peter Wright of Torrance got a 200.2-pound tuna in just 20 minutes. He said it took a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook, 130-popund Blackwater fluorocarbon, 130-pound Maxima mono topshot, 130-pound Izorline spectra, an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Squeaking into the cow club with a 200-pound fish, Tony Postolov used a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook. He said he used 130-pound Izorline pink fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Phenix seven-foot rod.

Good evening folks. So far it has been a great ride home. Almost half way there and still great weather.

Tomorrow is a big day with Capt. Margarita starting the festivities after lunch. Give the guys a chance to eat before the Margarita's flow. College games and Margarita's. Sound fun? With nice weather it will be.

Andy Cates

Good morning folks. We left the Island yesterday at about noon. We have had a nice ride so far and expect to get in on Monday a little early.

After leaving the epic fishing at the Bank, we had saved room for a few fish at the Island in hopes of a couple of Jack Pot fish. First day was more of the same with a little morning show on fish from 80 to 170 pounds. Just enough to make you feel like you were on to something. That died out.

Yesterday before we left we made a good move and had a chance at a couple of big fish and things worked out.

Butch Oldenkamp on an Accurate 12 landed this 256 and It looked like that might be first place untill Tom Kelleher landed a 286 on the kite. This took first and second and it looks like one of the low 200's from the Bank will be third.

All in all it worked out great . Now we are on our way home and we have a great catch with happy and tired beat up anglers. The boat leaves on another long trip on the 19th of January. John Grabowski will be running the boat. With the fishing at the Bank and the chance of a cow at the Island it is a great setup. Also some wahoo to be had, we did pick up 5o wahoo at the bank that rounds things off nicely. If you are looking to come out and get in on some of this we do have a spot or two on the next trip.

Call the office and let them know

Good evening folks. We have had no signal but wanted to update on the fishing. We started out at the Island. We had a very slow day with very little sign and poor conditions.

We made the move out to the Bank and it paid off big. Our timing was great and we saw it get better and better each day, Really a nice grade of fish with many fish in the high hundreds closing in on the 200 pound mark. Most fish being 120 to 200 pounds. Each day we watched the grade and caliber of fishing get better and better.

Classic Hurricane bank fishing. Very little wind just enough for the kite. Oh and were those kites on fire . Some evenings it was as fast as you could get it out there. All day biting with an incredible show and action in the evenings.

With our fill of fish we are headed in to the Island and give that another try in hopes of a few Jack Pot fish. We will be there and have a day and a half to fish. Hopefully we get a few big ones.

The Red Rooster III has been at Hurricane Bank,…at this time, the Satellite service has been very poor. That is why there has not been any reports at this time. We will certainly keep you all posted. They are all doing fine, and enjoying their fishing  trip. Office of RRIII

Good evening folks. Not much to report today. First day of travel gave us a chance to do a little maintenance and get the boat ready for a week of fishing. We had cool temperatures with fog and very little sunshine.

Tomorrow we start the seminar's and the rigging. Flat seas but chilly today.

We will report again tomorrow
