These large grade bluefin sure are a challenge to catch.  In typical bluefin fashion they were hard to hook up and once they did bite they are tough to land, especially on the light line it usually takes to fool them into biting.  There was a fair share of long battles, heartbreak and elation.  Those are probably the three things that best describe light tackle tuna fishing.  Despite it being a slow trip we had a great group of guys on the boat.  They were having fun right up to the end.

We are wrapping up our trip now and heading for the barn.  Our eta is 6:30.

Roger got himself a yellow.
We caught 14 of these guys this morning.

July 26, 2015

Today was another tough day of kelping.   There was a lot of paddies to stop on unfortunately most of them were holding few if any fish.  Couple that with the windy, rough weather that  hounded us last night and all day today, it makes for a long day. The bright side was that the yellowtail and dorado that we did catch were good grade. We are going to be in the local bluefin area tomorrow looking to score.  We are due.

Tom Ferrari

These kelp fish are nice grade

We will be in tomorrow at about 6:30 in the morning see you then

July 10, 2015

Good evening.  We traveled most of the day and fished the afternoon for a few Yellows and caught a little bit of bait for tomorrow. We are going to work up the line and make a few quick stops as we go up

July 9, 2015

We are headed up the line after a classic day at the Rocks. 132 wahoo all trophy class fish. what a treat.
We will be up at Cedros tomorrow looking for a few Yellows

Working on a good day at the Rocks.   Seems to be a few wahoo around.  Fish started to bite while we were on the anchor and continued to chew on the troll. Even hooked a marlin that we released.

July 8, 2015

At lunch it slowed down. We are going to head offshore in a little bit for the afternoon.

We have had a nice morning on these school size Yellowfin.  A little over 100 for the morning and some select yellows to go with the catch. The wind backed way off and it has been classic fishing most of the morning

July 7, 2015

We have had a real nice day catching yellowfin and yellowtail until evening. We are going to try it again tomorrow. What a great day on the anchor!

We still seem to be scratching at this school size tuna. Now that the yellows backed off we are getting straight tuna. Seem to keep a couple on the line. Hopefully it holds up

It slowed way down bit still picking a few. At least we keep a couple fish on the line and hope it picks up again

The conditions are pretty good but the water is a tad on the green side.

steady action this morning on tuna and Yellows . hopefully we can keep up the pace

July 6, 2015

We picked off 45 yellows and half a dozen school size tuna. We took off and are headed south. 200 more miles

The fish started to show at about 8:30.

pretty slow so far. A few Yellows this morning but no current yet. Hopefully soon

July 5, 2015

We left yesterday on the Jorge Nice fore memorial.  An 8 day trip that started with a long day of travel with a stop in the evening for a few Yellows. We ate going to fish our way down tomorrow and be on the Ridge the following day

July 3, 2015

Couple of short stops on kelp paddies this morning. Pat with a nice offshore Yellow. Good grade yellows on these kelps.
Poor speed last night with choppy weather cost us time but we should be in by 6:00 in the morning

July 2, 2015

Now we try for bait!

We have traveled most of the day. We made a stop for a few Yellows for lunch tomorrow.

We have had great fishing for the last few days. The Ridge offered great limit style fishing on Yellowtail and Tuna. We had a nice mix of trophy fish with Yellows up to 40 pounds and Tuna up to 65 pounds.

Our trip out to Alijos brought aboard 27 nice wahoo and a full day of heavy losses on the temperamental fish. Am highlight of any 8 day is just to get into a Wahoo arena.  From Alijos Rocks we went back into the Ridge on an overnight move to get more action on the school size tuna and yellowtail.

We are currently headed up the line and may make a short stop on the newly developed yellowfin tuna area within 4 day range. Looks like things are really starting to shape up and hopeful for the local arena.

We leave on another 8 day trip on July 4th and looking forward to another successful trip.

Andy Cates

July 1, 2015

We will start heading up this afternoon making stops as we go

Looks like things are about done and time to head offshore

We seemed to keep three to five fish going most of the morning.

We have had a nice morning scratching at this school grade tuna

June 30, 2015

We finished off with 27 hard earned wahoo. heavy losses but the chances were there. We are going to try for the Jack Pot size tuna in the morning. Back on the road again

We are getting a few strikes now. Pretty spotty but maybe the bulk of the fish will move in soon

Cole with a nice one and a group shot on a little bingo

Look at the weather in the background. Real nice So far just a couple of strikes . Getting a couple on the Cow Bell

June 29, 2015

We picked off a few more nice 60 pound class tuna for Jack Pot .Jeff and Sonny look to be the top dogs as of now

One nice 60 pound tuna for the afternoon effort

We are headed offshore to see if we can find something floating or some of the tuna the guys were getting last week

Things slowed way down at about 11:00.

They just kept coming aboard

the grade was nice and the action was heavy

We had a real nice morning on school size Yellowfin and Yellowtail. Clean fishing with very few throw back size fish and no skip jack.what a treat

June 28, 2015

We really never picked up the pace but finished the day with 120 Yellows and 42 tuna. We are hoping the morning brings us action and we can get started early.
Sonny released a small Black Sea Bass and everybody started to get in the groove.

June 27, 2015

Sorry for the lack of updates, but our satellite communications have been giving us problems.

The last couple of days of the trip have been spent in constant overcast, rainy, and windy conditions.  Even with those adverse conditions the anglers on the trip really fished hard.   It always seemed like the majority of the group was at the rail trying.   Despite their never quit attitude the fish just weren't very cooperative.

The picture I'm posting with the tuna is of Dennis Monaham and John Peterson, good friends for a long time.  There's a funny story about these two fish.  John's fish is about 175 lb and Dennis's is about 150 lb. John hooked his fish in the dark on a chunk and was fighting it for a little while before Dennis hooked his, also on a chunk.  The fish natural decided that they had to circle around each other much to my distress.  After spinning Dennis' rod around John's circling tuna for quite a while I felt the spectra grab onto the tail of John's fish.  The fish spooked, ran and cut through the mono. Disappointed he retied and went back at it while Dennis played out his fish and the crew gaffed and boated it.  When we went to untangle the tail wrapped fish the line came tight over the side. Dennis was still on a fish! He fought the second fish and landed it.  The first fish was John's still stuck on the line, the second was Dennis' s original fish hooked in the mouth!  That had everybody shaking their heads and laughing, especially when John accused Dennis of trying to steal his fish.  That was pretty classic.

I decided to make a quick pit stop on the way home to try for some wahoo.  We only had about 2 hours to spare, but we managed to scrape together 33 wahoo.  It was a nice way to break up the ride home.

The passengers are great spirits now waiting for the football games to start.  We have nice traveling weather and are hoping it stays this way all the way to the dock.

for the Red Rooster III crew,

Jan. 12, 2015

The last two days have been fairly productive.  The guys have been trying to fool these tuna using a lot of different methods.  I think that's part of the fun of these long trips.  You get a chance to experience a lot of different techniques all on the same trip.

The skipjack fished on the big gear has produced a couple of nicer fish every morning.   That's always an exciting way to hook up.  The kite has also been fairly productive.  Don Rolstad got bit by a nice tuna on the way out.  He didn't even have a chance to get geared up before he was pinned to the rail!

Yesterday was our best day as far size goes.  We had three tuna tape out over 200 lbs and most of the rest of the fish that we caught were good size.  We have a couple of more days here so hopefully we can keep picking away at these nice tuna.

After a day and a half of basically fruitless searching we have decided to pull stakes and make a move.  It wasn't that the fish wouldn't bite, it was that we really didn't see much fish. We will be at the new fishing grounds first thing in the morning.  Hopefully the next couple days are more action packed.

Speaking for the RR III crew,

Jan. 9, 2015

Today was our first fishing day of the trip.  It wasn't our first day of catching.  We spent some time scouting around, trying to get the lay of the land.   We chased down a couple of nice bird schools only to find that they were holding small fish. We did managed to scrape up a couple of wahoo, a handful of tuna,  and some dorado.   Hopefully our scouting today pays off with fish tomorrow.

Jan. 7, 2015

We started off the day with a couple of raffles from Loftus & Martin (L&M) and Tom Kelleher.  L&M raffled off a pair of Okuma Makaira rods equipped with Okuma Solterra reels spooled with spectra backing, 50 lb maxima line and a Capt Jimmy bomb.  The ready to fish outfits were won by Tom Kelleher and Don Rolstad.  Tom Kelleher raffled off a custom Seeker 6465 XXXH rod.  The proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets are going to the charity Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise which helps US marine families. Lars Fahlberg was the lucky winner.  Everybody also received a L&M "super" goody bag.  After the festivities had died down we decided to stop to try for some wahoo.  We stayed pretty steady jig striking on wahoo all afternoon.  We finished up the day with 44 wahoo for our efforts.  Definitely better than traveling all day.  Right after a very nice  sunset I put the boat back on course and resumed our travels south.

Jan. 5, 2015

Happy New Year!  Our first trip of the year has begun.  We are headed down on a Loftus & Martin 15 day trip.  The sardine we picked up on the way out of the harbor looks pretty good.  They  are a little on the small side but it was the only thing available.  We are headed south hopefully with good fishing off the bow.

Mike made a great dinner tonight.  Bacon wrapped scallops over a New York Steak.  It was a good way to start the trip.

Tom Ferrari and RR III crew.
